PB hotel design editorial

Glasgow's West End has one of Britain's most intact Victorian residential streetscapes, and the Italianate sandstone terrace on Devonshire Gardens that houses Hotel du Vin Glasgow is among its finest examples — a run of late-nineteenth-century townhouses whose Corinthian-columned porticos and rusticated ashlar facades have lost nothing to time. The hotel was assembled from five of these adjoining villas, giving it an unusual spread of 49 rooms across interconnected floors, each house contributing its own proportions and ceiling heights to the whole. What the images make clear is the deliberate tension the interiors maintain between Victorian architectural bones and unapologetically vivid contemporary decoration. The drawing room keeps faith with the original damask wallcovering, coffered plasterwork ceilings, and deep bay windows dressed in chocolate velvet, furnishing it with wing chairs, tartan cushions, and a comfortable accumulation of lamps that carries the atmosphere of a well-kept private club. The restaurant follows a similar register — panelled mahogany doors, an elaborate plaster cornice, leather chesterfield banquettes, and large oil paintings hung against patterned wallpaper under a beaded chandelier. Bedrooms then upend expectations entirely: fuchsia button-back headboards, bold floral curtains in hot pink and green, and freestanding roll-top baths positioned beside original marble fireplaces in teal-painted rooms. The oscillation between Victorian propriety and vivid colour is the property's defining character, making it one of the most genuinely distinctive addresses in the Hotel du Vin portfolio.

"This time I only went for Sunday dinner. As usual started the day with a lemon martini cocktail made by the best mixologist on the planet. Then went onto have Sunday dinner which was exquisite. I cannot stress how delicious this is. The focaccica bread is baked there and was light and fluffy. Venison terrine for starters was delicious. Roast beef dinner to die for and chocolate hazelnut tart with honeycomb ice cream was made in heaven. All washed down with a glass off champagne. The staff are fantastic too. All the reasons to go and see for yourself. Below are some photos if mine and my families lunch. However, no photos of dessert as I just got stuck in. Sorry. It is not expensive either. So why are you sitting reading this review when you should be booking to eat or stay or both."

"I stay locally so I refer to the bar and restaurant here. The service is utterly impeccable and flawless. The barkeep Oksy has given us the greatest attention I have found in any place in Glasgow by far. She is swift with the menus and snacks. She is welcoming and she always serves drinks in the condition they deserve. The ambience is always relaxed and welcoming. The fire is often on to keep you cosy and the place is always vibrant without being overcrowded. Commendations to the management but especially to Oksy who still remembers your preferences even if you've not been in three months."

"We travelled to Glasgow on the Caledonian Sleeper so we obviously arrived very early in the morning. We decided to go straight to the hotel to see whether they would be kind enough to store our bags until we could check in later in the afternoon. We were astonished when we were told that we could have access to our room straight away. We had booked the most basic room which obviously wasn’t in such great demand and it was luckily available to us first thing. We were so grateful to be able to settle into our room after not the best night’s sleep in our room on the sleeper. I had turned 65 at half past six that morning whilst the train was in a siding at Carstairs junction and the hotel was the treat for my birthday. The generosity of the hotel extended to a couple of cocktails in the bar which were delicious. Our room was large, warm and comfortable with a beautiful bathroom. We were on the top floor which could have been a problem to anyone with limited mobility but it was fine for us. We had pre-booked last September and had taken advantage of the package which included the cooked breakfasts, which were superb. The granola bars were the best I have ever eaten and the choice of continental breakfast would have been perfectly adequate for anyone not wanting the supplement of the hot breakfast. The building is beautiful with stunning architectural features which made this the only choice for our visit. The staff are very professional and personable and made our experience absolutely perfect. If you are depending on public transport there are bus stops into town very close by on a regular basis on route 6/6a and it is just a short walk from the Hillhead underground station on Byers Road. We absolutely shall return."
