PB hotel design editorial

Glasgow's Blythswood Square was laid out in the early nineteenth century as one of the city's most distinguished residential addresses, its sandstone terraces framing a private garden that remains, in the image above, exactly as composed as its Georgian architects intended. The building at the square's southern range, originally constructed in 1823 and later serving as the headquarters of the Royal Scottish Automobile Club, became Kimpton Blythswood Square Hotel following a conversion that preserved the neoclassical facade and its Ionic portico entrance while threading a thoroughly contemporary sensibility through the 100 rooms within. The tension between those two registers is what makes the property work. In the principal dining room, full-height sash windows flood Corinthian columns and ornate plasterwork cornicing with north light, the architecture handled with restraint — deep plum drapery, herringbone parquet, velvet tub chairs in charcoal and grey — rather than overwhelmed by decoration. The bar takes a bolder position: a circular counter clad in teal fish-scale glazed ceramic tile, topped with white marble and framed in brushed brass shelving, sits beneath original moulded ceilings and Lindsey Adelman-style globe chandeliers. Guest rooms in the Georgian wing retain their panelled walls, painted a uniform cool grey and hung with contemporary works, while rooms in the modern extension shift to leather-upholstered headboards, herringbone oak floors, and a cleaner midcentury palette — the two halves of the building held together by a consistent material restraint.

"I stay here regularly for business. I have been coming here for at least eight years now and every time it never fails to wow me. From the concierge service carrying my bags in from the car to the reception desk being super helpful and friendly. This time in particular has been outstanding. I arrived at 4 pm and the concierge walked over to my car to greet me and carry my bags into the reception for me. Check-in was smooth, easy and super friendly. The hotel itself is absolutely beautiful and immaculate. I have travelled around the world and stayed in many many hotels all around the world and this is up there with one of the best hotels and staff I have ever come across. It’s the small things that makes such a big difference the cold water in the fridge in the gym, the access to the beautiful spa, the bedrooms are always Immaculate and the food. Wow, the food. Tonight I was served by Sam he was a phenomenal waiter who knew the menu inside out and gave recommendations for accompanying drinks. He asked questions regarding my food preferences and tastes. This then enabled him to make recommendations to suit what he thought I would like which by the way was absolutely outstanding. I have eaten in Michelin star restaurants that have not tasted half as good as this food does here. It is exceptional. Sam was friendly and chatty. Nothing seemed rushed or that he was trying to move onto the next table. As a solo traveller somebody that works away and sits on her own a lot at restaurants it was lovely to have a genuine conversation with somebody. He is an absolute credit to this Hotel and although he isn’t on shift tomorrow when I am here again, he said he was going to leave his dessert recommendations and paired wines written down behind the bar for me to remember tomorrow as I was too full tonight to have a desert. Again time and time again, I am more impressed with the level of service and care that goes into looking after guests here at this hotel Genuinely, nothing compares. Thank you so much Blythswood for always being so accommodating."

"My partner and I had a wonderful nights stay at this hotel a couple of weekends before Christmas to celebrate his birthday. Our room was directly above reception and the main entrance overlooking Blythswood Square gardens. We had full size floor to ceiling windows and arm chairs where you could sit and watch the world (and rain) go by in complete cosy comfort. The bed was huge and super comfy. There was a bath between the bedroom and shower room where you could relax and watch tv from. I enjoyed a soak after breakfast the next day. The room was very spacious and felt luxurious in all fittings and fixtures. Complimentary mini bar and great coffee machine were lovely touches. We enjoyed a beautiful meal in the restaurant and excellent service from the staff there before being truly pampered experiencing all the different treats in the spa. The spa was busy but not overcrowded and got quieter as the night progressed. The snow shower was a fun, unique attraction. Breakfast was delicious, plentiful choice and well organised. We both ordered cooked freshly prepared dishes which were excellent. Again service was brilliant. Hopefully we will be back next December"

"The Blythswood Spa seems incapable of picking up a telephone. This is not a one-off thing. We have visited several times over the past 10 years, but actually getting to speak to someone is almost impossible. We would not ally book online but a voucher code we have is not working so need to speak to someone to resolve it. Tried at different times and through different channels but no joy. Such frustrating customer service."

"After reading Brian M's review dated January 2026 (Unacceptable) I feel angry! Myself and three daughters had afternoon tea on 7th February 2026 and experienced exactly the same issues that were in the previous review which were - "boring sandwiches , which are a cop out now as so many upmarket places use their imagination and offer alternatives to cheap white bread with some cream cheese and cucumber. Scones were lovely , but certainly not dainty and the cakes were awful. I had them boxed up , but they went in the bin the next day." Only in our case the scones were horrible too and were stale and the cream was so hard it would not spread on the scones. The response from the Guest Relations was - "Your comments regarding the presentation and creativity of the sandwiches, as well as the cakes, have been taken on board and will be shared directly with our culinary and service teams for review." So since the previous review in January nothing has changed and you are still serving sub-standard afternoon tea which at £49 each I feel really cheated! I personally enjoy afternoon tea and have frequented quite a few lovely establishments and received beautiful food at half the price you charge. I wanted to email you direct with my issues but could not find contact details on your website."

"My friend received a voucher from her kids for her birthday and luckily she chose me as her plus 1. I’m a firm believer in only getting one chance to make a first impression and this hotel certainly delivered. I’ve read a few comments about young inexperienced staff and although we saw no obvious sign of inexperience, without exception staff were helpful, courteous and happy to spend 5 minutes to chat to their guests. You can train people on processes but you can’t “train” a naturally positive attitude and they were a credit. Special thanks to the charming and professional chap at reception, the lady who served us with our complimentary wine at happy hour and our server at dinner (on a media and film course) all of whom we had lovely interactions with. I completely understand the negative comments about the spa being at capacity and people having to wait but the hotel wasn’t busy so we had no issues. There are also reviews about voucher guests being treated differently. I’ve been fortunate to be able to stay in a fair few 5 star hotels in my well earned retirement and not for a second did we feel we were not valued and I can definitely say this hotel can hold its own with the best of them."
