PB hotel design editorial

Tucked into the granite-boulder hillside above Anse Louis on Mahé's southwest coast, where dense takamaka forest spills down to one of the island's least-visited beaches, the design challenge at Anantara Maia Seychelles Villas was fundamentally ecological: how to place thirty villas on a steeply terraced site without disturbing either the canopy or the sense of radical seclusion the location promised. The answer, visible from the water, was a cluster of steeply pitched thatch-roofed pavilions that disappear into the treeline — their conical profiles referencing vernacular Indian Ocean forms while their heavy timber frames and floor-to-ceiling sliding panels bring them closer to contemporary tropical resort architecture of the kind refined across Southeast Asia over the past three decades. Inside, the interiors work a considered register of warm teak slatting, canopied four-poster beds in white linen, and woven rattan seating — a vocabulary that feels calibrated to comfort rather than spectacle. Broad-planked hardwood floors anchor each room, with dusty-rose silk cushions and hand-loomed throws providing the only colour against a largely neutral ground. The carved basalt totem columns rising from the main infinity pool are the property's most overt decorative gesture, borrowing from Polynesian and pan-Indian Ocean craft traditions to give the outdoor spaces a ceremonial weight. The dining pavilion, with its exposed radial timber trusses and woven-panel ceiling, carries the same structural honesty through to the resort's social heart.

"Gorgeous grounds, views and villas. The Premier ocean view pool villa was stunning inside and outside. The view of the beach and ocean was gorgeous. I would have liked more sunshine as the outside area and swimming pool was almost always in the shade and I had to go to the hotel swimming pool to get sunshine. Check if sunshine is something you are seeking. The diversity of the menus was appreciated. The butler villa, Nady, provided excellent service and the staff in the restaurant were very friendly. It was nice to have activities on certain days or evenings. I felt like the General Manager was trying to upsell; in general, it felt like upselling was part of the hotel philosophy as despite the high prices one is already paying, the hotel is continuously trying to get you to spend more whether it is a very expensive bottle of wine (the cheapest was very pricey) or an excursion or as an example when we asked for a late check out. The check out of a few hours would have cost a significant amount of money which I thought was ridiculous given the total expense of the stay. The exorbitant cost of the late check out was decided and communicated by the General Manager. If it was about room availability - as cited - it would not have been about a price. Beautiful place but that situation at the end disappointed me."

"Our stay at Anantara Maia was even better than we expected—and we already had very high expectations. The hotel itself is gorgeous. The villas are comfortable, spacious, and everything works perfectly. The food is excellent and varied; even during a longer stay, you probably would not have the chance to try everything. The hotel offers a wide range of activities, most of which are included in the daily rate, from wine tastings to a variety of water and sea sports. But by far, the best part is the people who work here. They are always smiling and constantly looking for ways to make your stay even better. A huge special thanks to our villa host, Sisca, who is absolutely perfect in every imaginable way, and to Mike, who is responsible for the water sports. A 15/10 experience."

"We stayed at the hotel for 7 days and simply loved it from the very beginning. We arrived very early on the first day, but were able to check into our villa shortly after. The villa itself was very spacious and spotless, and the view is breathtaking. The villas are spaced relatively far apart, ensuring maximum privacy. The entire resort has a certain patina to it, which makes it very charming and somehow mystical. The service and hospitality are a dream, thanks in large part to our villa host, Theo, who truly did and arranged everything we could possibly imagine. But all the other staff members also contributed to making this time unforgettable. So warm, personal, and always helpful and cheerful. The food was excellent, and the selection was very diverse. We were able to enjoy some experiences in the wine cellar, during the gin mixing class, the rum tasting, and the private cooking class. All of these activities were well worth it. On the last day, our flight was very late, but we were able to have the villa to ourselves until 7:00 PM. All in all, an experience we will definitely repeat."
