PB hotel design editorial

Framed against the sheer sandstone face of Table Mountain, its terracotta facade mirroring the mountain's own amber at dusk, the building that houses Cape Grace, A Fairmont Managed Hotel has one of the most commanding waterfront positions in the southern hemisphere. Built on a private quay within the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront in 1996, the property was conceived from the outset as a grand colonial manor transplanted to the harbour's edge — five storeys of mansard rooflines, white-painted balustrades, and symmetrical fenestration arranged to face the working marina on one side and the mountain on the other. The 120-room hotel underwent a significant transformation following Fairmont's stewardship, with interiors refreshed to balance the building's period vocabulary against something more attuned to contemporary Cape Town. The guest rooms carry that calibration well: dark-stained herringbone parquet grounds cream panelled walls dressed in classical cornice mouldings, the furniture mixing tufted linen ottomans and nailhead-detailed upholstered headboards with geometric-patterned rugs in terracotta and ivory that quietly reference the Ndebele tradition. The main restaurant opens around a curved marble bar — brass-railed, plant-dressed, coffered ceiling above — that sits between the formality of white-linened dining tables and the harbour light flooding through tall windows. Downstairs, the basement bar pivots to something altogether moodier: fluted burnt-orange columns, green velvet tub chairs, tulip-base brass barstools, and arched mirror panels behind the counter conjuring a mid-century supper club that could belong to any continent but somehow feels entirely local.

"The most incredible spa experience — thank you, Siphokazi. Not many therapists truly understand what a deep tissue massage should be… but you absolutely do!"

"We have stayed in over 30 Fairmonts in the world and Cape Grace is one of the very best - to be honest it's more akin to a Raffles than a Fairmont for most destinations of the world.  I don't think I have ever seen any hotel with so many children-related features - toilet seat, bath mat, milk bottle cleaning brush, electrical socket protectors, scooter including helmet, diaper garbage can, bath toys, bathrobes and slippers, etc.  We stayed in a signature suite with balcony which might not be the most "wow" suite in terms of design but it's old school luxury for sure and very comfortable. Breakfast was also quite a treat, we could order room service or go to the restaurant so we did both.  The buffet had oysters and the menu was creative and imaginative.  Not standard and boring by any stretch of the imagination.  Service was fantastic, on par with the finest hotels in Asia or Middle East, with only one blemish at the end when they called at 12:15 to inform me about 12:00 check-out.  Considering that many other hotel chains guarantee 4pm check-out (Hyatt, Marriott), it felt a bit like they rushing me to leave despite Accor Diamond status, which would not happen at other hotel chains. Otherwise we thoroughly loved this hotel.  Location is fantastic as well. During the same trip we also stayed at InterContinental nearby to compare. Fairmont is only a tiny bit more expensive (less than 10% extra) but worth far more so I would say Fairmont the better value for sure and it is where I would return."

"Had an equisite experience of the Spa at the Cape Grace. From the initial booking with Rozanne and Jodie, till the very end, it was seamless. The experience was of an intimate spa, that is not busy or rushed. Prior to and after my massage I used the facilities which were all available, and super clean. My therapist was excellent with the full body massage. After a shower I enjoyed decilcious tea, snacks and a birthday cupcake. There is some seating outside as well as inside the salon. Overall, a five-star experience. I would highly recommend the spa. The staff make all the difference."

"After a few moments during the check in process, me and my partner realised we had been dropped off at the wrong hotel! It was at this point we experienced service that i can honestly say was at a level I’ve never experienced before. Rather than simply giving us directions to where we needed to be, the receptionist (I think her name is Sive) made an internal call to see if their hotel car was available. Yes it was, within a few minutes the car was at the front door, Sive kindly ushered us to the car where Ricky was waiting for us, we got in and was driven to where we had booked. Instinctive, warm, caring service that will never be forgotten…if you are considering staying at this hotel, you will be in the best of hands."
