PB hotel design editorial

Framed against the sheer sandstone face of Table Mountain, its terracotta facade mirroring the mountain's own amber at dusk, the building that houses Cape Grace, A Fairmont Managed Hotel has one of the most commanding waterfront positions in the southern hemisphere. Built on a private quay within the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront in 1996, the property was conceived from the outset as a grand colonial manor transplanted to the harbour's edge — five storeys of mansard rooflines, white-painted balustrades, and symmetrical fenestration arranged to face the working marina on one side and the mountain on the other. The 120-room hotel underwent a significant transformation following Fairmont's stewardship, with interiors refreshed to balance the building's period vocabulary against something more attuned to contemporary Cape Town. The guest rooms carry that calibration well: dark-stained herringbone parquet grounds cream panelled walls dressed in classical cornice mouldings, the furniture mixing tufted linen ottomans and nailhead-detailed upholstered headboards with geometric-patterned rugs in terracotta and ivory that quietly reference the Ndebele tradition. The main restaurant opens around a curved marble bar — brass-railed, plant-dressed, coffered ceiling above — that sits between the formality of white-linened dining tables and the harbour light flooding through tall windows. Downstairs, the basement bar pivots to something altogether moodier: fluted burnt-orange columns, green velvet tub chairs, tulip-base brass barstools, and arched mirror panels behind the counter conjuring a mid-century supper club that could belong to any continent but somehow feels entirely local.

Cape Grace, A Fairmont Managed Hotel Reviews

"A stay at Cape Grace Hotel is nothing short of exceptional. From the very moment you arrive, there is an immediate sense that every detail has been carefully considered and that no request is too much trouble. What sets this hotel apart is its ability to deliver true five-star excellence without ever feeling pompous or overly formal—luxury here is warm, intuitive, and effortlessly delivered. The attention to detail throughout is simply superlative, with every touchpoint reflecting a genuine commitment to guest experience. However, it is the people who truly elevate this hotel to another level. The reception team, in particular, are the heart and soul of the experience—welcoming, attentive, and sincerely engaged. A special mention must go to Sheba, whose warmth, radiant smile, and authentic care left a lasting impression. Her presence embodies everything that makes this hotel so memorable. This is more than just a place to stay; it is an experience that lingers long after departure. A true class act in South Africa, and without doubt a hotel that will remain in my thoughts for years to come."

"We have just spent 9 nights at the Cape Grace and have nothing but plaudits for the hotel, the service and the staff. We were visiting Cape Town primarily to attend wedding celebrations and the assistance provided by the concierge team who organised travel to the various locations hosting the celebrations and the door staff who showed such great interest in our experiences and made considerable effort to make us feel at home contributed greatly to our enjoyment. We are fortunate to be very experienced in stays at luxury hotels in many parts of the world and we can truly say that there are none which we have experienced which surpass the hospitality that we enjoyed at the Cape Grace. It is a tribute to management and staff that we felt valued as customers and so very well looked after. It would be invidious to pick out individual staff members and our immense gratitude for their kind and warm hospitality go to all the team that we encountered. They will know who they are I am sure so I do hope that this review is shared with them. As is often flagged by reviewers, it is the small things that make a difference and the eye for detail at Cape Grace was very apparent."

"Although our first visit to Cape Town, we have friends living there who recommended a number of top hotels. We chose Cape Grace for its unbeatable location, brilliant for walking around the ultrasafe harbour area. I have never seen quite so many staff, all extremely welcoming and attentive, everywhere in a hotel. On top of this, their security while being discreet was terrific. Lovely breakfasts…perfect pool for cooling off…after a few days in Cape Town we realised that we would never wish to stay anywhere else when visiting in future. The Concierge service was as good as it gets. We were in touch with Mr Aidan Kraak well before our arrival, making detailed arrangements and Aidan was absolutely amazing, way ahead of the curve and a credit to the Fairmont brand. We were so grateful for all his advance advice and attention that on arrival at the hotel, we brought him a gift from Fortnum and Mason’s in London. I have noticed that some Fairmont hotels do have an amazing Concierge service and Aidan was up there with the best. Very highly recommend and definitely the best choice for a lovely, comfortable, ultra convenient stay."

"There honestly aren’t words to describe how perfect this place is- you feel at home the second you arrive. The team are so warm and friendly, and always around if you need anything. The location is amazing - super central, really convenient, and feels very safe. It’s perfect for being with family or friends (and literally about a two-minute walk from Time Out Market). The breakfast buffet is unreal, and the kimchi grilled sandwich will actually change your life. The rooms are really spacious, with the best views over the waterfront. The whole place just has such a good vibe- they’ve completely nailed that old-school hospitality feel. There’s also a gym, spa, pool, and a concierge who can sort anything for you. I could easily spend weeks here. Honestly couldn’t recommend it more."
