PB hotel design editorial

Framed against the sheer sandstone face of Table Mountain, its terracotta facade mirroring the mountain's own amber at dusk, the building that houses Cape Grace, A Fairmont Managed Hotel has one of the most commanding waterfront positions in the southern hemisphere. Built on a private quay within the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront in 1996, the property was conceived from the outset as a grand colonial manor transplanted to the harbour's edge — five storeys of mansard rooflines, white-painted balustrades, and symmetrical fenestration arranged to face the working marina on one side and the mountain on the other. The 120-room hotel underwent a significant transformation following Fairmont's stewardship, with interiors refreshed to balance the building's period vocabulary against something more attuned to contemporary Cape Town. The guest rooms carry that calibration well: dark-stained herringbone parquet grounds cream panelled walls dressed in classical cornice mouldings, the furniture mixing tufted linen ottomans and nailhead-detailed upholstered headboards with geometric-patterned rugs in terracotta and ivory that quietly reference the Ndebele tradition. The main restaurant opens around a curved marble bar — brass-railed, plant-dressed, coffered ceiling above — that sits between the formality of white-linened dining tables and the harbour light flooding through tall windows. Downstairs, the basement bar pivots to something altogether moodier: fluted burnt-orange columns, green velvet tub chairs, tulip-base brass barstools, and arched mirror panels behind the counter conjuring a mid-century supper club that could belong to any continent but somehow feels entirely local.

"There honestly aren’t words to describe how perfect this place is- you feel at home the second you arrive. The team are so warm and friendly, and always around if you need anything. The location is amazing - super central, really convenient, and feels very safe. It’s perfect for being with family or friends (and literally about a two-minute walk from Time Out Market). The breakfast buffet is unreal, and the kimchi grilled sandwich will actually change your life. The rooms are really spacious, with the best views over the waterfront. The whole place just has such a good vibe- they’ve completely nailed that old-school hospitality feel. There’s also a gym, spa, pool, and a concierge who can sort anything for you. I could easily spend weeks here. Honestly couldn’t recommend it more."

"I recently had the pleasure of staying at the Cape Grace, and it truly exceeded expectations—what is not to love? From the moment we arrived, the service was exceptional. The staff were warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming, with Liz, Bronwyn, and Sheba standing out in particular for making us feel completely at home. Their personal touches made all the difference and elevated the entire experience. The rooms are beautifully appointed and wonderfully spacious, offering both comfort and elegance in equal measure. Every detail has been thoughtfully considered to ensure a relaxing and luxurious stay. The location is another highlight, perfectly positioned right on the vibrant V&A Waterfront. This makes it incredibly convenient for exploring the area’s shops, restaurants, and attractions, all within easy walking distance. Overall, a truly memorable stay—I would not hesitate to recommend this exceptional hotel."

"My wife and I stayed here at the end of a trip to Southern Africa and we loved it. The location is great, the rooms are well appointed and spotlessly clean however the real highlight is the level of hospitality. Absolutely everyone we interacted with was warm, friendly and incredibly helpful. We both became ill and needed medical attention and the hotel organised it quickly and, very noticeably, several members of staff afterwards seemed to know we had been unwell and ask how we were recovering. They accommodated special dietary needs, welcomed us back when a flight cancellation delayed us by over a day and we needed a room at short notice and accommodated late check outs. In addition the concierge helped us to organise a tour of the city and gave us help with any number of questions. We would also draw attention to the door staff who were always so warm and helpful. In short, we felt welcome, we felt recognised and we would certainly look forward to staying at the Cape Grace again."

"Not the same Cape Grace we have enjoyed for ten years We are currently staying at the Cape Grace Hotel. The hotel itself is beautiful and the location at the V&A Waterfront is wonderful. Cape Town is fantastic, but unfortunately the service during our stay has been disappointing. We arrived after 10pm following a long journey involving two flights. We had deliberately paid for the room from that day even though we knew we would arrive late, as we wanted to wake up on the first morning of our stay and spend a relaxing day by the pool. However, when we went down for breakfast on our first morning we were told that due to a conference the pool was closed for the entire day and breakfast on the terrace was also unavailable. There had been no communication about this beforehand. Had we known, we would simply have arrived the following day and saved ourselves the long journey. After raising this with management we were assured we would be “looked after.” However the following day when we went to the pool we waited nearly two hours without any staff approaching us to offer towels, lounger covers or drinks, while people arriving later – including visitors coming in from outside the hotel with luggage – were immediately attended to. Breakfast was also disappointing for a hotel at this level. On my first day my eggs Benedict were significantly undercooked, leaving the egg white unpleasantly runny. We have been coming to this hotel for around ten years and have always valued its warm hospitality. Since becoming part of Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, the atmosphere now feels far more focused on corporate events than on the experience of paying hotel guests. A bottle of wine was later sent to my room as a gesture. As I do not drink alone I asked if it could be sent next door to friends travelling with us, but even this simple request could not be accommodated. I hope management will reflect on this, as it would be a shame for a hotel with such a long-standing reputation to lose the loyal guests who have supported it for many years."

"From the moment you arrive, you are made to feel genuinely welcomed and invited — something that is increasingly rare and incredibly special. The warmth of the hospitality, the attentiveness of the team, and the thoughtful details throughout the stay create an experience that feels both effortless and memorable. My stay was truly exceptional, and I was so appreciative of the kindness and care shown by everyone at the property. The atmosphere strikes a beautiful balance between elegance and comfort, allowing you to immediately relax and feel completely at home. The views of Table Mountain and the Harbour everywhere you walk in the hotel , is so welcoming. Sometimes “thank you” feels too small to fully express the level of gratitude I have for such a wonderful experience. The generosity and genuine hospitality shown throughout my stay meant more than I can properly put into words. I left feeling incredibly grateful and already looking forward to returning again."
