PB hotel design editorial

Framed against the sheer sandstone face of Table Mountain, its terracotta facade mirroring the mountain's own amber at dusk, the building that houses Cape Grace, A Fairmont Managed Hotel has one of the most commanding waterfront positions in the southern hemisphere. Built on a private quay within the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront in 1996, the property was conceived from the outset as a grand colonial manor transplanted to the harbour's edge — five storeys of mansard rooflines, white-painted balustrades, and symmetrical fenestration arranged to face the working marina on one side and the mountain on the other. The 120-room hotel underwent a significant transformation following Fairmont's stewardship, with interiors refreshed to balance the building's period vocabulary against something more attuned to contemporary Cape Town. The guest rooms carry that calibration well: dark-stained herringbone parquet grounds cream panelled walls dressed in classical cornice mouldings, the furniture mixing tufted linen ottomans and nailhead-detailed upholstered headboards with geometric-patterned rugs in terracotta and ivory that quietly reference the Ndebele tradition. The main restaurant opens around a curved marble bar — brass-railed, plant-dressed, coffered ceiling above — that sits between the formality of white-linened dining tables and the harbour light flooding through tall windows. Downstairs, the basement bar pivots to something altogether moodier: fluted burnt-orange columns, green velvet tub chairs, tulip-base brass barstools, and arched mirror panels behind the counter conjuring a mid-century supper club that could belong to any continent but somehow feels entirely local.

"Two stays here in February and March at the beginning and end of our safari. Lovely rooms but very very busy hotel with a bit of a wait at reception. Staff are pleasant. Restaurant staff are fantastic!"

"We have stayed at comparable properties, with similar amenities including other Fairmont locations. For this stay, the Cape Grace team elevated our experience to exceptional. Prior to check in the concierge was responsive and so very helpful. Once we checked in Aidan remembered helping us with our pre-stay questions, amazing! He helped me formulate a shopping plan as well as arranging for fleshly baked scones in the late afternoon, after I spent too much time shopping. He was genuine, warm and caring as well as extremely professional. He also helped arrange for a driver, Eddie, to take us to dinner. It was s short ride, and he made every minute a pleasure. Nosi provided a wonderful check in experience and she gave me great shopping advice. The property itself was inviting, not pretentious, in an excellent location. The rooms are well-appointed and breakfast was the best meal. However, none of this could compare to the ultimate difference maker, your very special Team. I truly felt the warmth each time one of your team members said “welcome home.” I would return and recommend to anyone looking for a “Six Star” experience."

"Dinner at Cape Grace was nothing short of exceptional. From the moment we arrived, the service was warm, attentive, and incredibly thoughtful. Every detail was handled with such care, making the entire evening feel truly special and luxurious. The food was outstanding, beautifully presented and absolutely delicious, but what really made the experience unforgettable was the level of hospitality. The team went above and beyond to make us feel spoilt and welcomed throughout the night. A truly memorable dining experience and one I would recommend without hesitation. I will 100% be back."
