PB hotel design editorial

Table Mountain as a backdrop is one of the great theatrical givens of Cape Town, but few properties have arranged themselves quite so deliberately in relation to it as One&Only Cape Town, which spreads across a man-made island in the V&A Waterfront marina, its low-rise villas and six-storey hotel wings framing that flat-topped silhouette from almost every angle. The architecture, developed by local firm dhk Architects and opened in 2009, deploys a warm sandstone palette and pitched-roof pavilions for the island villas — visible here catching the last of the golden-hour light — while the main hotel wings rise in a more contemporary register of horizontal balconies and layered facades that keep the massing from reading as monolithic against the mountain beyond. Internally, the 131 rooms and suites were designed with a hand that favors bleached oak joinery, marble-topped nightstands, and tactile boucle upholstery in tones borrowed from Cape fynbos — dusty gold, soft sage, warm linen. Headboard panels in oxidized metallic finishes catch daylight differently hour by hour. The signature restaurant interior moves in a sharper direction: lacquered black tables, darkened timber floors, and dramatically vertical pendant lighting — amber glass forms cascading against white subway tile and a bold circular architectural frame — give the dining space a mood that sits closer to Tokyo than to the Cape. The pool terrace, ringed with mature palms and travertine edging, pulls everything back toward the unhurried ease the property was built around.

"Wow! What an unexpected stay at the One and Only Cape Town. This was our first visit, and from the minute we walked through the stunning beautifully fragranced foyer, the brand name came to life. This is well appointed building with up, close and personal views of Table Top Mountain. We had a problem with the smell of our initial room, and everything was done to make sure we were moved and upgraded to something more suitable. The staff were exceptional, able to take responsibility for what went well, and what didn’t. The Spa therapists were great, although the product push at the end felt a bit much. All in all, would we return… Yes, Yes, Yes. Thank you Carmenita for your generosity, professionalism and care; Melvin at breakfast, for your warmth care and fabulous juices, to the amazing concierge team for our great escapes and dining choices, and Margaret for looking after our room. Rocky for the best afternoon tea ceremony and service ever! Your hand-on- heart greeting says it all. Thank you Carol & Paul"

"What an amazing hotel and during our stay all the staff stayed true to the name in ensuring that it is the “One and Only” The experience starts with the warmth and welcome from the staff on the door when you arrive through to Phil providing the guided tour and then on to reception and to every staff member we encountered. Phil is the beating heart of the place when it comes to chatting to the guests and offering advice on best places to visit and checking out how their day is going. Wonderful hotel and could not praise it and the team highly enough. Ladies who looked after the rooms were amazing and could not do enough to help. Location is perfect for enjoying all the Cape Town has to offer while being within a few minutes walk of all the restaurants and bustling nightlife of the waterfront. Rooms and views of Table Mountain are incredible. The pool area a haven of peace and tranquility in a busy city with amazing service. Gym and spa are top class and the breakfast and lunches were fantastic. If you visit ensure you take time to enjoy an evening drink in the bar relaxing to the music and watching the sun go down. Could not recommend highly enough and all the little touches that the management team (welcome notes to biscuits and chocolates in the evening) put in place for customers are truly wonderful. A most amazing hotel. Can’t recommend highly enough"

"Another phenomenal stay at this hotel. We were there for 8 nights and it has become like a 2nd home. The facilities, room, food is excellent but what sets it apart is the quality of its staff and their friendliness. They welcome you each year and are genuinely happy to see you. Anne - General Manager and clearly runs a superb hotel Pool area - Melissa runs the show with competence and warmth ably assisted by Sive, Zoe, Sasindi and many others. Nothing is too big or small and they are brilliant with the kids tol. Breakfast- Rafeeka looked after us during our stay and was superb! All of the team are excellent and hats off to the management here. Front of House - Charles and David and the whole team are both great fun and good at their jobs! Spa - Portia was an excellent at coordinating and NTombi was great too. A truly special place"

"Well the name says it all, fantastic location looking directly at Table mountain, staff, food and drinks excellent, outdoor facilities including the pool brilliant, but one thing which was above and beyond, was unfortunately my wife wasn't to well and one night and we requested a visit by a doctor via reception this was around 10pm and by 10.30pm a doctor was in our room and organising a prescription which was all delivered by 12. Wife recovered very quickly so unbelievable service. Thank you all."
