PB hotel design editorial

Table Mountain as a backdrop is one of the great theatrical givens of Cape Town, but few properties have arranged themselves quite so deliberately in relation to it as One&Only Cape Town, which spreads across a man-made island in the V&A Waterfront marina, its low-rise villas and six-storey hotel wings framing that flat-topped silhouette from almost every angle. The architecture, developed by local firm dhk Architects and opened in 2009, deploys a warm sandstone palette and pitched-roof pavilions for the island villas — visible here catching the last of the golden-hour light — while the main hotel wings rise in a more contemporary register of horizontal balconies and layered facades that keep the massing from reading as monolithic against the mountain beyond. Internally, the 131 rooms and suites were designed with a hand that favors bleached oak joinery, marble-topped nightstands, and tactile boucle upholstery in tones borrowed from Cape fynbos — dusty gold, soft sage, warm linen. Headboard panels in oxidized metallic finishes catch daylight differently hour by hour. The signature restaurant interior moves in a sharper direction: lacquered black tables, darkened timber floors, and dramatically vertical pendant lighting — amber glass forms cascading against white subway tile and a bold circular architectural frame — give the dining space a mood that sits closer to Tokyo than to the Cape. The pool terrace, ringed with mature palms and travertine edging, pulls everything back toward the unhurried ease the property was built around.

"We had an absolutely wonderful stay and wouldn’t hesitate to return. From the moment we arrived, the service was warm, attentive and genuinely exceptional. Our room was beautiful…spacious, immaculate, with top-quality bedding and furnishings — and the view over Table Mountain and the marina was incredible. Every detail felt luxurious, and we especially loved the thoughtful little gifts and sweet treats left in our room each evening. Breakfast each morning was outstanding, with a fantastic selection and excellent service from the breakfast team, who were always so friendly and attentive. We also used the gym several times during our stay and were really impressed as hotel gyms can be hit and miss - it’s well equipped and far better than you’d expect from a hotel gym. The pool area is beautiful and a perfect place to relax, and we also had dinner at the hotel one evening, which was absolutely gorgeous. The location is fantastic too — an easy walk to the V&A Waterfront, making it so convenient to explore. We did have one small mishap with a booking, but the team handled it brilliantly and went above and beyond to make it right. It didn’t impact our stay at all and actually showed how much they care about their guests. They also helped organise a fantastic trip to Cape Point, which was seamless and memorable. Overall, a truly top-notch experience with exceptional service, beautiful rooms, amazing food, great facilities and a perfect location. Thank you for such a lovely stay — we’ll definitely be back!"

"We had the pleasure of being hosted by Menzi during our stay at the One&Only Cape Town, and he truly elevated our entire experience. From the moment we arrived, he made us feel genuinely welcomed and at home, setting the tone for what became an exceptional stay. Menzi consistently demonstrated a high level of professionalism, attentiveness, and warmth. He anticipated our needs before we even had to ask and handled every interaction with efficiency and grace. His attention to detail did not go unnoticed—whether it was ensuring our preferences were remembered or offering thoughtful recommendations, he showed a clear commitment to personalized service. What stood out most was his ability to create a seamless and memorable guest experience. He struck the perfect balance between being present and respectful of our privacy, which is a hallmark of truly outstanding hospitality. His positive attitude and pride in his work reflect extremely well on the standards upheld by the One&Only brand. Menzi is an asset to your team, and his dedication to excellence is exactly what guests hope for when staying at a property of this caliber. We are grateful for his care and would gladly return, in large part because of the exceptional service he provided."

"A beautiful hotel in the perfect location. The service at this stunning hotel is the first thing that strikes you in, plentiful, courteous and ever eager to please. The rooms are stunning, modern well designed and spacious. Our rooms had a view out to Table Mountain, spectacular. The public areas have a special view over Table Mountain through huge windows from the cocktail lounge. The swimming pool is beautiful and complemented by excellent poolside service. Breakfast is lovely, endless choice, great service in a great setting. We were impressed to see the hotel General Manager welcoming guests one morning, a nice touch. A minor check in issue was quickly corrected, a test of a great operation."

"Wow! What an unexpected stay at the One and Only Cape Town. This was our first visit, and from the minute we walked through the stunning beautifully fragranced foyer, the brand name came to life. This is well appointed building with up, close and personal views of Table Top Mountain. We had a problem with the smell of our initial room, and everything was done to make sure we were moved and upgraded to something more suitable. The staff were exceptional, able to take responsibility for what went well, and what didn’t. The Spa therapists were great, although the product push at the end felt a bit much. All in all, would we return… Yes, Yes, Yes. Thank you Carmenita for your generosity, professionalism and care; Melvin at breakfast, for your warmth care and fabulous juices, to the amazing concierge team for our great escapes and dining choices, and Margaret for looking after our room. Rocky for the best afternoon tea ceremony and service ever! Your hand-on- heart greeting says it all. Thank you Carol & Paul"
