PB hotel design editorial

Facing Table Mountain across the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, a crisp two-storey Georgian-Revival manor house anchors what became the Queen Victoria Hotel — its whitewashed facade, arched entrance fanlight, and symmetrical fenestration carrying the quietly colonial authority of nineteenth-century Cape Town even as the surrounding precinct transformed into one of Africa's busiest leisure destinations. The 207-room property was developed as part of the broader V&A Waterfront regeneration and draws its architectural identity from this careful period pastiche, the cobbled forecourt planted with mature trees and dark ceramic urns grounding the entrance in something closer to a private residence than a waterfront hotel. Inside, the interiors navigate a particular Cape Town mode of contemporary glamour — grey silk drapery pooling over patterned carpets in tones of slate and lavender, wingback chairs upholstered in dusky rose velvet, and chrome-legged desks that nod to Art Deco without quite committing to it. The restaurant anchors itself around a monumental black-veined marble column, wire-mesh pendant lights hovering above grey linen armchairs and dark herringbone oak floors, a large figurative canvas of winged animals providing the room's one gesture of genuine surprise. The bar, furnished with silver leather club chairs, brown leather bar stools, and a lacquered grand piano in the corner, carries the atmosphere of a well-appointed members' club, mountain views framed through floor-to-ceiling glazing beyond.

"My husband and I have just returned to the UK after five nights at the Queen Victoria. When we arrived we were greeted by Nela who showed us around our room and in fact the whole hotel. She continued to assist us our whole stay; a lovely vibrant and helpful person. The hotel is quite modern and well located, took us a few minutes to get to the waterfront. The pool in the grounds of the Dock House was really spacious with the comfiest sun beds and a really good lunch menu. The staff here were attentive and looked after us well. Breakfast had a good selection and the view from the breakfast/terranium was amazing. Nela informed us that we could have breakfast at the Victoria and Albert but we didn’t this time. All the staff here deserve a mention but it’s difficult to remember everyone. Although Oswell at the front of the hotel was charming and again like the other staff here very helpful. Such a great stay and hope to return next year. Susan and David x"

"The hotel is in a good location, not far from the centre but far enough not to hear the noise of the drums, music and locals singing!! You have use of a swimming paddling area and sunbathing on very comfortable beds. You can share the facilities of The Victoria and Albert hotel which is 5 minutes away. Breakfast we think is much better there. Lovely view of the harbour and much more choice on the buffet front. Didn’t like the choice on the dinner menu at The Victoria but there’s so much choice only 5 minutes away that it wasn’t an issue. Very difficult to get enough tea bags in the room. Would bring our own next time. Definitely recommend the hop on/ off bus. Great way to get around and see things. People talk about long queues for the cable car up to Table Mountain. We were advised to get there first and assess the queue. If it’s long then buy your fast track then (costs twice as much). When we got there about 2pm the queue was about 10-15 minutes which didn’t warrant fast track. Prefer Victoria to the Victoria and Albert but that’s down to noise preference!"

"Our 2nd visit to the V&A. We’d previously we’d stayed at the one and only hotel for our wedding anniversary, but this was way beyond our family budget this time so I chose the Victoria and we weren’t disappointed. Firstly location wise it’s 10/10 and a better location than The One as it’s straight across the road into the V&A. Breakfast was excellent, all the staff were very helpful and we enjoyed cocktails and drinks and wine most nights which were all very good value. The pool is their sister hotel 3/4 mins walk from the hotel with plenty of sunbeds on the grass around the small pool. There is also a bar serving drinks and lunch which was good. Our 2 rooms were quiet and spacious and we had no complaints and would defo return again. Thank you for the stay!!"

"We discovered a jewel in the crown when we stayed at this hotel for a week. Our many thanks to Jason and all the wonderful staff, who are a credit to the hotel. The service was exceptional and nothing was too much trouble. We also enjoyed the most wonderful culinary experience where everything was presented beautifully and tasted most delicious. Whether you want restful time by the lovely serviced pool area, time at the vibrant, close-by, Waterfront or as a base to return after a day of sightseeing, this hotel comes with our highest recommendation."
