PB hotel design editorial

Two heritage buildings on Wale Street at the edge of Cape Town's historic CBD — the former Standard Bank building from 1891 and the adjacent Board of Executors building — were stitched together and crowned with a contemporary glazed tower to create Taj Cape Town when it opened in 2010. The contrast visible from the street is deliberately unresolved: neoclassical sandstone rustication and ornamental cornicing at street level, a recessed glass connector in between, and above it all a fourteen-storey modern block with full-width balconies framing views toward Table Mountain and the harbour. It is a composition that chooses dialogue over disguise, and largely succeeds. Inside, the two registers coexist with reasonable confidence. Rooms in the heritage wings retain their Georgian sash windows and high ceilings, dressed in a traditional palette of olive-green tufted headboards, patterned wool carpets, and brass chandeliers — warm without being fussy. Tower rooms shift to a cooler contemporary register, earth-toned upholstery and mirrored joinery opening onto the city's dusk skyline. The restaurant carries the most architectural energy: original pressed-tin ceilings and decorative plaster columns wrapped in bold botanical fabric sit alongside cobalt Murano-style chandeliers and navy velvet dining chairs, drawing the building's Victorian bones into something genuinely contemporary. The indoor pool area, lined in travertine and teak decking, provides a quieter counterpoint — restrained and useful rather than theatrical.

"The staff and the attention to detail at this hotel is extremely impressive . The rooms are lovely and is close proximity to everything . The Bombay brasserie is absolutely a fantastic restaurant . The butter chicken is the best we have tasted , all thanks to chef Negi . The manger Jamil really looked after us as did our waiter Yousef . I recommend this hotel and we will come again . The only negative is the booking was through booking.com and the hotel couldn’t find their booking ."

"Another two-week long stay at one of our favourite hotels worldwide where it really does feel like coming home to our family. This time we were allocated Suite 1209, a very newly refurbished and beautifully decorated large, bright and comfortable space with the most breathtaking view of Table Mountain. We were shown to our room by the truly wonderful Head Concierge, Dale, where we found some lovely and very thoughtful surprises waiting for us, which just sums up the lengths that the team at the Taj go to exceed your expectations. We had an early arrival from a very long overnight flight so, after a much needed rest, it was time to catch up with our other amazing friends – Duty Manager Jade, Reception Manager Zim, Butlers Innocent and Christopher and Primrose who is a formidable force in the breakfast restaurant. All ensured that we were very well looked after throughout our entire stay. In fact, every member of staff were always helpful, cheerful and eager to ensure that we were having the best possible stay. Special thanks though go to Dale along with his team – Adrian and Tariq who put so much work into organising activities and restaurant reservations to ensure that you make the most of your stay and experience everything that the wonderful Cape Town has to offer. We always dine at the fabulous Bombay Brasserie restaurant within the Taj on our first and last nights where the food, service and ambiance are second to none and the team there even ensure that we have our favourite table on each visit. During this stay, it was my partner’s birthday and so immense thanks to Dale and Innocent for organising such a special and memorable day. Needless to say, we were very sad to be leaving but we are already planning our next visit and look forward to rejoining our Taj family then. Thank you to the entire Taj Cape Town team, you are absolutely THE BEST!"

"The hotel is gorgeous. Our room is beautiful with a marble bathroom, cherry wood built-ins and a lovely view of Table Mountain. This is my second time here and they’ve upgraded my room both times without me having to say a word. Everyone is extremely friendly and professional. I would definitely stay here again."
