PB hotel design editorial

Two heritage buildings on Wale Street at the edge of Cape Town's historic CBD — the former Standard Bank building from 1891 and the adjacent Board of Executors building — were stitched together and crowned with a contemporary glazed tower to create Taj Cape Town when it opened in 2010. The contrast visible from the street is deliberately unresolved: neoclassical sandstone rustication and ornamental cornicing at street level, a recessed glass connector in between, and above it all a fourteen-storey modern block with full-width balconies framing views toward Table Mountain and the harbour. It is a composition that chooses dialogue over disguise, and largely succeeds. Inside, the two registers coexist with reasonable confidence. Rooms in the heritage wings retain their Georgian sash windows and high ceilings, dressed in a traditional palette of olive-green tufted headboards, patterned wool carpets, and brass chandeliers — warm without being fussy. Tower rooms shift to a cooler contemporary register, earth-toned upholstery and mirrored joinery opening onto the city's dusk skyline. The restaurant carries the most architectural energy: original pressed-tin ceilings and decorative plaster columns wrapped in bold botanical fabric sit alongside cobalt Murano-style chandeliers and navy velvet dining chairs, drawing the building's Victorian bones into something genuinely contemporary. The indoor pool area, lined in travertine and teak decking, provides a quieter counterpoint — restrained and useful rather than theatrical.

"We loved everything about our stay at The Taj. From the moment we arrived, the service was exceptional. Our luggage was taken care of immediately, and our car was valet parked while we checked in. At reception, we were welcomed with warm hand towels and a refreshing glass of iced tea, a lovely touch after travelling. We stayed on the 17th floor, and the room was beautifully appointed, offering everything you would expect from a five-star hotel, including a private balcony. The spacious bathroom featured both a shower and a bathtub. Breakfast was divine, with an impressive selection of hot and cold dishes, including a variety of delicious Indian specialties. The hotel offers two restaurants: an all-day dining venue and a fine-dining restaurant serving outstanding Indian cuisine. What truly sets The Taj apart is its staff. Every team member was friendly, professional, and efficient, making our stay even more enjoyable. We highly recommend The Taj and would happily stay here again. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐"

"We had an absolutely wonderful family stay at Taj Cape Town and truly enjoyed every moment! From the moment we arrived, the hotel felt like a warm, luxurious home. Our family had so much fun, and the service was outstanding throughout. Special thanks to Salim, Mathew, Mr. Blanchard, and Mr. TK for their incredible care and attention. The waiters were always happy and attentive, and the butlers went above and beyond to take care of us. I even had the pleasure of going on a fantastic hike with Salim — highly recommended! We also loved Lion’s Paw. The management is incredible and truly catered to our every need. The rooms were spotlessly clean, spacious, and excellently appointed. We highly recommend the spa — it was a perfect treat. Mr. Rakesh is hands-down the best chef I’ve ever experienced in my life! The food at all three restaurants was outstanding. You must try the French toast, and the Bombay restaurant is an absolute must-visit. Jamil, the restaurant manager, is such a great guy — he even personally showed us around the street, which was such a thoughtful touch. That’s the kind of service you only get at Taj! This is truly Taj excellence, and we are so happy we chose to stay here. Thank you to the entire team for making our family holiday so special and memorable. We can’t wait to return! Highly recommended! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐"

"Our stay at the Taj Cape Town was, one of the best overall hotel experience we have had and we travel a lot. In fact this was our 69th country we have visited. We did use the spa and it is truly a top-tier facility. The treatments were world-class, executed by skilled therapists. We ate at Mint Restaurant for both breakfast and dinner during our two-day stay. The quality of the food and the ambiance were consistently excellent. While the property itself is stunning, it is the staff who make the Taj truly exceptional. We would like to recognize three individuals who are the epitome of hospitality. Rita at the Front Desk was professional and welcoming and made our stay seamless and personal. Smiley at The Mint Restaurant was super attentive, (his name suits him) with a genuine smile. Christopher in the Executive Lounge made our stay in the lounge relaxing and special. These three employees are a true asset to the Taj team and represent the very best of what this iconic brand stands for. Our only regret is that we couldn't stay longer. If you are visiting Cape Town, do yourself a favor and stay at the Taj."
