PB hotel design editorial

Two historic Cape Dutch homesteads on the forested lower slopes of the Constantiaberg — one dating to 1693, the other a nineteenth-century manor known as Hohenort — were joined and converted into The Cellars-Hohenort, a 53-room hotel set within nine acres of gardens that have been cultivated continuously since the Dutch East India Company first planted vines here three centuries ago. The stepped gables visible in the images are among the most intact examples of Cape Dutch domestic architecture in the Constantia Valley, their white-plastered lime render and brown-painted timber sash windows establishing a formal register that the interiors quietly honour rather than dramatise. Inside, the rooms carry the atmosphere of an exceptionally well-kept private house — sage-green wingback chairs, botanical wallpapers in muted charcoal and cream, white-painted chest drawers, and iron-branch chandeliers that sit comfortably within the high-ceilinged volumes without pretending to period accuracy. The garden terrace restaurant, positioned above a formal lily pond edged with clipped box and agave, frames a view toward the Constantiaberg through Italian cypress and ancient oak that no amount of deliberate design could manufacture. Beyond it, the pool terrace is bordered by cascading bougainvillea, its brick-edged paving and wrought-iron gate keeping the scale domestic even as the mountain asserts itself over everything.

"Arriving at the Hohenhort feels like stepping into a world where old‑world charm meets modern luxury. The extensive, impeccably maintained gardens create the sense of a countryside escape, a peaceful slice of paradise just waiting to be wandered. The staff are unfailingly polite and genuinely helpful, and the interiors strike a lovely balance between elegant and quirky. There’s a playful nod to Africa throughout, with vibrant fabrics and ceramics by renowned South African design house Ardmore adding character without ever feeling overdone. Add in two heated pools, a beautifully kept tennis court, and the overall atmosphere of relaxed refinement, and you have the perfect setting to truly unwind. It is on the pricier side, as one might expect, but I would highly recommend it."

"This was our first stop after a very long journey. The welcoming staff helped us feel at home and the beautiful Conservatory was a great place for our first dinner. There is a shuttle to near by shopping, Kirstenbosh gardens and the V and A waterfront. The on site gardens are beautiful and there is a nice pool with shaded loungers for relaxing."

"Our second stay at this superb hotel and it was as enjoyable and faultless as last year. Beautiful location, decor and the most wonderful staff as well as offering the top class Conservatory restaurant where we dined each evening."

"We stayed here as a treat on a recent trip. The hotel and its surroundings are stunning. Lots of different accommodation buildings and beautiful grounds with lots of nooks to explore. We stayed in a standard room which was in the 2nd building on the 3rd floor. Our room was lovely and very spacious with everything you need-fully stocked mini bar which was complimentary. The toiletries are from Africology which are lovely. Our rate includes breakfast which is served in the conservatory or on the terrace. It included continental and cooked breakfast. It was delicious. We also had dinner on our first night in the conservatory. The dinner was amazing-very delicious. A few things that could be improved: understanding it’s an old property, but the windows rattle and leak noise, maybe consider secondary glazing. Noise from people walking past the door can be disturbing, maybe fitting sound proofing would help. It didn’t affect us too much but can imagine in the busy months it would be noisy. On our 2nd night we went down to the conservatory for dinner at 6pm, to be told that they were slammed and we couldn’t eat until 7:30pm. The restaurant was not full by any means and it would have been good if the hotel let you know you should book to guarantee a table. We decided to order room service and we were served in less than 30 minutes which was great. We tried to settle our bill the night before we left as we were leaving at 6:30am. We were told that it would have to be done in the morning. It just meant to added stress to us leaving as the traffic to the airport can be unpredictable."

"Pros: -Reception: Exquisite. By the time we reached the front desk, they already had our registration, a warm towel (soaked in lemongrass scent) & sweet iced tea ready. A duty manager (Ashwin) walked us to our room, showed us around, and answered all our questions. Duty Manager Llewelyn courteously extended our stay to 8 pm to accommodate our late-night flight departure. Personalized letter in our room explaining the available services and facilities. Nougats were offered as farewell gifts. - Room: A cheese and cracker plate plus a full-size bottle of wine welcomed us. Bedroom was small but had lots of storage. Bathroom was spacious, featuring a full bathtub, a large shower stall and 2 sinks. Amenities contained essential oils from Africology. Mini fridge contained complimentary Coke Zero, lemonade, beers, and water, plus cans of nuts, biltong, gummies, & chips. 2 hooks and 2 big towel racks (one heated as long as the correct switch is flipped) in the bathroom. 1 hook on the entry door to the bedroom. - Meals: Dinner was delicious (free-range beef burger, paella, & chocolate financier) and featured top-notch service. Different restaurant staff frequently checked on us. Restaurant (called the conservatory) is beautifully decorated with a full view of the greenery outside. Lunch was also delicious (Cesar Salad, Calamari, Oysters, & Chicken). Prices were amazingly reasonable for quality. - Facilities: Old-fashioned decorations but beautiful and clean. 2 outdoor swimming pools with heated water. - Location: Isolated in a remote place, with a security guard checking entries. The grounds spread out with nicely kept gardens and trees all around. Cons: - Bedroom: Windows without screens allowed big flies inside. The curtains allowed sunshine through early in the morning. - Bathroom: An instructive sign on the heated towel rack would be helpful. Water pressure was low. No handheld shower wand was provided. - Service: No Disturb sign was ignored. - Facilities: There were no elevators because the whole hotel consisted of 2 main buildings that used to be some old mansions, plus some detached small houses."
