PB hotel design editorial

Six enormous grain elevator silos, built in 1924 to process wheat arriving at Cape Town's working harbour, gave Heatherwick Studio one of the more structurally demanding conversion briefs in recent hospitality history. The practice's solution — to push bubble-shaped glass protrusions outward from the existing concrete grain silo tower, creating faceted diamond-paned windows that bulge from the original structure's rigid grid — transformed The Silo Hotel into one of the most recognisable silhouettes on the V&A Waterfront. Opened in 2017 above the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa, which Heatherwick also designed within the lower silo complex, the hotel spans the upper six floors of the grain elevator, with 28 rooms and suites fitted into a building whose raw board-formed concrete columns and rooftop infinity pool colonnade remain unapologetically industrial in their weight and texture. The interiors, conceived by Liz Biden of the Royal Portfolio, push hard against that industrial shell in a productive tension. Each room carries its own chromatic identity — dusty rose velvet arched headboards, antique crystal empire chandeliers, ikat-print armchairs in coral and ochre, zebra-hide occasional stools — assembled with the eclecticism of a well-travelled collector rather than a decorator following a mood board. The diamond-paned windows, visible in every room image, frame Table Mountain and the harbour simultaneously, their geometric steel tracery holding the landscape like a series of shifting paintings. Upstairs, the rooftop bar arranges tufted teal velvet banquettes and circular iron candelabra chandeliers against the same structural glazing, the Atlantic horizon dissolving into the geometry beyond.

About

The Silo Hotel is a magical space towering above the V&A Waterfront surrounded by the natural wonder of South Africa’s Mother City. The Silo has been built in the grain elevator portion of the historic grain silo complex occupying six floors above the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA). Zeitz MOCAA is a contemporary art museum that rivals the likes of the Tate Modern in London, MoMA in New York and Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid. Zeitz MOCAA is a not-for-profit partnership between the V&A Waterfront and Jochen Zeitz, whose collection forms the Museum’s founding collection. The building has been designed by Thomas Heatherwick, Founder and Principal of the London-based Heatherwick Studio. Heatherwick Studio was tasked with the transformation of the elevator house and the adjacent storage annex of six rows of seven silos, while carefully retaining its cultural significance.

"Absolutely beautiful hotel. The views from the rooftop pool, bar and restaurant are a wonder in and of themselves. Highly recommend. Myself and our entire party felt safe, relaxed and well taken care of at The Silo. Unlike other luxury hotels that rely on having been trendy at one point, The Silo maintains their property. Your 5 star experience doesn't dwindle with age. I appreciate that."

"The Silo Hotel is one of the nicest hotels we have stayed at it is located right on the Victoria water front with beautiful views-the hotel is on top of an excellent museum which you do not want to miss. The rooms are so spacious and decorated with original art work. Beautiful art work is also displayed all around the public areas. The beds are very comfortable with use of top linen sheets. The staff provides over the top service- we stayed there for two visits in December- we were able to store our luggage while on a safari. What ever they could do to make out stay wonderful was done- they even provided us toothbrushes and paste when the airline lost our luggage- to help us out while waiting for luggage delivery the next day- they helped us staying in touch with the airline to track our luggage . We dined at the great restaurant for all the nights of our stay- the food, views and cuisine was excellent. I will also say the breakfast included with your room stay was outstanding. All the staff is wonderful- we did have a warm welcome and a tour of the hotel by Shingal Mt who went out of his way to make us feel at home. We wish we had stayed at the Silo a few more days- and if we make it back to Cape Town this is our choice of hotel."

We had a spectacular panoramic view of Table Mountain. The rooms are very unique, with high ceilings, and lots of floor to ceiling windows. The room was very well appointed, and the bed was comfortable."

"Here you go — polished, natural, and still warm 👍 Review: My wife and I stayed for three nights and found the location to be perfect, with easy access to local attractions and restaurants. The staff were incredibly friendly and genuinely couldn’t do enough to make our stay comfortable. The rooms were spotless, very comfortable, and offered great views. The food was excellent throughout our stay, and overall the experience exceeded our expectations. We wouldn’t hesitate to stay at this hotel again and would happily recommend it to others."
