PB hotel design editorial

Pressed against the granite flank of the Twelve Apostles mountain range, where the Camps Bay coastline gives way to raw Atlantic exposure before the road curves toward Hout Bay, the Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa sits in one of the most geologically dramatic settings of any hotel in southern Africa. The white-painted Cape vernacular structure, developed in the early 2000s under the Red Carnation Hotel Collection, takes its name directly from the buttress peaks looming above it — a relationship the building acknowledges by stepping back into the slope rather than competing with it. Louvered shutters, white balustrades, and terrace railings in wrought iron carry the property's coastal register, while the ocean-facing rooms frame uninterrupted views across the South Atlantic through full-height sliding glass doors. Inside, the interiors move between two distinct moods depending on aspect. Ocean-facing suites deploy a palette of aqua and white — ikat-patterned quilts, tufted bench seating in sea-glass turquoise, sunburst mirrors in gilded iron, and white coral-form chandeliers — creating something closer to a well-appointed Mediterranean villa than a conventional hotel room. Mountain-side rooms shift toward warmer sand and taupe tones, with carved bone-inlaid headboards, brass reading lamps, and botanical protea prints that ground the scheme in South African material culture. The restaurant carries the same coastal lightness, rattan chairs in painted teal paired with striped linen tablecloths beneath a coffered white ceiling that opens toward a boulder-strewn garden courtyard beyond.

"We recently came back from a holiday in South Africa staying at 4 different hotels, 12 Apostles was our first stay and the first time at the hotel. I want to write an honest and constructive review. We felt the hotel was tired, dated and cramped, certainly by the pool area. It was quite pricey and certainly not value for money. For breakfast every day (we stayed 5 nights), we had issues in orders not be taken, wrong orders delivered, poor service in forgetting we were sat there. Our room which was a sea view suite was nice but again tired, it lacked maintenance - for instance a shower door which didn't close so flooded the bathroom floor every time even though we tried to help with towels. Really should be fixed. It's obvious it's broken. The turn down service was very good. The car park is an eye sore and when outside had bad smells of bad fish. Bar staff at Leopard Bar were very attentive but cocktails were not of best quality. Having stayed in some other hotels on the same trip, it's obvious that this hotel sadly is living on it's tradition but unfortunately does not deliver a first class experience."

"I recently celebrated my birthday with a two-night stay at the 12 Apostles Hotel in Spa (March 3–4), and it was a wonderful experience from start to finish. The staff greeted me warmly at check-in and made thoughtful gestures that made the stay feel special for the occasion. The room was spotless, comfortable, and beautifully appointed a quiet. Housekeeping was attentive without being intrusive, and small details (fresh succulent flowers, plush towels) added to the celebratory atmosphere. Dining at the hotel was excellent. Breakfast offered a wide selection of fresh items, and the dinner menu featured delicious, well-presented. The hotel’s spa and gym facilities that looked new were a highlight, relaxing treatments and a serene environment that made the birthday feel truly indulgent. Overall, the 12 Apostles Hotel provided warm service, a comfortable room, great food, and a relaxing spa experience. It was the perfect way to celebrate my birthday, and I would happily return or recommend it to anyone looking for a special getaway."

"We thoroughly enjoyed our two night stay at this hotel and spa. Staff were attentive, friendly and professional. We were welcomed on arrival and given a tour of all the facilities. The sunsets from the restaurant terrace were outstanding. The hotel is quiet and, although some way out of the centre of Cape Town the free shuttle bus offers a good service for those who wish to visit the city. Although the Leopard Bar can become rather crowded there are other spaces where one can enjoy a quiet drink. Service in the restaurant was first class and the unexpected spectacular dry ice infused sorbet was a real surprise."

"My husband and I have just stayed three nights at the Twelve Apostles. From arriving to departing we had a great stay. Every corner is immaculate, inside and outside. The hotel had all you could want…..lovely towels and bedding, turn down, 24 hour gym ( I used the gym every day and it had great equipment) and a great shuttle service. Breakfast was excellent, the fruit amazing and choices of cooked, salad, pancakes etc. We had lunch in the cafe once and dinner in the Leopards Bar twice, again excellent. The nicest thing about this hotel are the staff. Always smiling and ready to help, too many to mention but I have to mention Lu-Lu who was one of the Shuttle Drivers. He was an encyclopaedia of knowledge about everything and we so enjoyed our journeys with him. Hopefully we will return to this lovely hotel and thanks to everyone for looking after us."

"I am so sorry to report such a bad review but having been welcomed as non-residents for a drink in the Leopard Bar, following a recommendation from great friends, our experience then took a bad turn. Whilst we were given a drinks menu we had to wait for at least 15 minutes before we were able to finally able to attract someone to take our order. Following another 10-15 minute wait our order … or should I say part of our order… arrived. The glass of wine was missing, they then had to come back and ask which wine & eventually on the 3rd attempt a glass of wine was poured. A bottle of water also had to be requested 3 times and then there was a dispute over the fact that we had ordered a large beer and they said it was only a small one. I did my best to explain our poor service experience to the head waiter who said sorry several times. I said that honestly it was the worst experience I had had in the whole of South Africa. We asked for the bill and to add insult to injury we had to ask for this 3 times as well."
