PB hotel design editorial

Facing the Atlantic along Sea Point's beachfront promenade, where the Cape Dutch gables of a 1920s landmark have anchored this stretch of Cape Town's coastline for a century, The Winchester Boutique Hotel carries one of the city's more enduring hospitality addresses into a confidently contemporary register. The white-rendered facade, with its stepped gables, arched ground-floor colonnade, and ranks of dark-shuttered sash windows framed by tall Canary Island palms, has changed little in outline — the renovation preserved the building's colonial coastal character while gutting and reimagining the interiors almost entirely. Inside, the approach shifts register depending on where you find yourself. The bar draws the sharpest contrast with the heritage exterior: Calacatta marble counter surfaces, brass-arched back bar niches, leather-and-bronze barrel stools, and a swirling Art Deco-inflected ceiling mural in terracotta, jade, and gold establish something closer to a contemporary European hotel bar than a Cape Town period piece. The guest rooms are more layered — sage-green walls, deep mahogany French doors opening onto chequerboard-tiled balconies, Morris-esque botanical cushions, and hexagonal brass lanterns in the standard rooms sit alongside attic suites where raking rooflines are painted in graphic grey angles and Sputnik pendants in blackened steel introduce a harder, more modern edge. The pool terrace, dressed in black-and-white striped canvas with timber decking and cast-iron furniture, holds the whole composition together with an easy coastal confidence.

"Fabulous Hotel with professional staff who provide excellent advice and service. We had 4 nights here. Weather in Cape town was appalling so spent a bit of time int he gym and the bar and the restaurant. Had a sea facing room and watching the waves out the window as storms passed through was amazing."

"We couldn’t have asked for a better hotel to stay at. The staff are the absolute highlight. Well trained, professional and friendly. The hotel is 5 star, luxury, without pretentiousness. We experienced a problem with some forward bookings, and the staff were most helpful. Restaurant food and service was amazing, as was the bar service. Porters, housekeepers, security were friendly and professional. I would always come back to the Winchester."

"My wife and I stayed at the Winchester as the very first stop of our dream honeymoon in April 2026. We had a really lovely stay and highly recommend to any traveler looking for a boutique hotel experience that is charming, intimate, romantic, and safe in Cape Town! The room was very well-appointed and spotless when we checked in. The hotel is located in Sea Point, which is just far enough away from the hustle and bustle of the Waterfront area to feel quieter and more intimate, while still being close enough to enjoy all that the Waterfront has to offer. The area felt very safe, and we walked a couple of blocks away for dinner one night without feeling unsafe in any way. The service throughout our stay was excellent. We always came home from our day out to a clean room with turn down service. The front desk, bag porters, and waiters at breakfast were always professional, kind and courteous. Speaking of breakfast, we enjoyed the complimentary continental breakfast every morning, and all was delicious! Overall, the Winchester Hotel offered the luxury and top service you might expect from the big hotels at the Waterfront without compromising on atmosphere, value, and safety. We highly recommend a stay here if you are visiting Cape Town, and we hope to return someday to make more memories in this beautiful city!"

"3 night stay. Awesome hotel! Not a huge room, but adequate. Clean and quiet with just a little bit of road noise (if it wasnt too bad for me, anyone else can sleep thru it!) Housekeeping everyday and turndown service every night. The entire staff was unbelievably friendly and helpful! A+++!!! Heated pool, small fitness facility, but again, adequate. Located directly across the street from the ocean. Sunsets were amazing from the bar overlooking the area (get there early if you want a seat for the sunset!) Safe area with plenty of dining nearby; easily walkable. Superb location with a free shuttle service to the V & A Waterfront. Breakfast was great with a large buffet only on the weekends. Order from the menu during the week. Can't speak highly enough about this hotel, and would be our first choice if back in Capetown!"

"Hard to think of anything that the hotel didn’t do right. eg Room service, washing, à la care restaurant at breakfast and dinner, helpful staff with tips on excursions and safety, cleanliness of room. We ate in every night as it was easier to catch the elevator after a meal , rather than a taxi home. The food is very good."
