PB hotel design editorial

Among Cape Town's working harbour buildings, a Victorian-era warehouse on the waterfront's Pierhead has carried the Victoria & Alfred Hotel since the V&A Waterfront development transformed this precinct in the early 1990s. The facade — rendered in pale grey, its arched windows marching in disciplined rhythm across three storeys beneath a shallow pitched roof — retains the muscular civic confidence of nineteenth-century colonial commercial architecture, while the marina below keeps the building embedded in active harbour life rather than preserved behind it. A recent refurbishment refreshed the 94 rooms toward a palette of bleached oak, warm stone tones, and deep navy upholstery — shell-backed armchairs in textured weave, marble-topped occasional tables, and circular wooden wall sculptures that carry a quiet reference to African craft without tipping into the decorative. The arched windows, retained throughout, frame Table Mountain and the working basin with the matter-of-factness of apertures designed for warehouse function rather than hotel theatre, which makes them all the more effective. On the waterfront terrace, bistro-style rattan chairs at pine tables face the basin directly, tensile canopy structures providing shade without closing off the view to the mountain. The garden pool, sheltered by subtropical planting and bordered in sandstone paving, sits at an unexpected remove from the harbour edge — a moment of seclusion that the rest of this very public, very well-positioned property doesn't otherwise offer.

About

History and modern luxury merge to create ageless beauty at the Victoria & Alfred Hotel, which was built in 1904 as the North Quay Warehouse. This iconic establishment was named after Queen Victoria and her son, Prince Alfred who played an intrinsic role in the establishment of the Breakwater Basin, now the V&A Waterfront. The hotel is located in the very heart of this internationally acclaimed destination and is a sophisticated retreat amid the buzz. It offers some of the most enviable views of Cape Town Harbour, Table Mountain and the slick city that stretches out at the foot of this Natural Wonder. Timeless elegance and personalised luxury are found at the award-winning Victoria & Alfred Hotel.

"Stopped here for drinks and ended up staying all day. We managed to sit right on the waterfront and enjoyed gorgeous weather all day. Victor was our server and he was phenomenal - we were never left too long and he was unbelievably helpful. He definitely elevated the experience for us. The inside of the hotel looks incredible, and the food and drinks are very reasonably priced. Highly recommended."

"If you are looking for a central location on the Waterfront then this is ideal. We had a room overlooking the plaza which was comfortable and quiet. Breakfast was very good, but not impressed when we had to pay extra for a cappuccino, also the breakfast staff need to pay a little more attention to detail, not possible to eat or drink without cutlery or cups! We enjoyed our stay, mainly due to the location. Is it worth the price? Maybe not, but if you want to be in the centre of things then this hotel is ideal. We would return."

"This is a great hotel located right on the harbours edge in the waterfront area. Our room looked out over the harbour which was a great start to the holiday. The room was comfortable, quiet (no noise from the walkway below) with a really powerful shower. The breakfast was great and the staff couldn’t be more helpful. We had lunch at the hotel and of course a few glasses of wine all of which were superb. However you don’t go to Cape Town to eat in the hotel as such a few of my top recommendations. There are two standout restaurants that you should visit. The first is a mere 200m from the hotel. This is called Coy and is a great place to enjoy a fantastic tasting menu. Not the cheapest by any stroke but worth it all the same. The 2nd is outstanding but an UBER trip of about 15 mins away. This is an absolute must and is called TTK Fledglings - if you are reading this you are used to trip advisor so check out the reviews. As for trips then of course you need to do Robben Island tour. We did the short version 3 hours which is great but we wished we had done the walking one as it would have been more immersive. Hope you have a great trip and enjoy some of my recommendations!"

"We believe this is the best hotel to stay in Cape Town. It’s in a great location by the water with lots of restaurants around to choose from. It is small but with full services so the level of personal service is very good. The restaurant is excellent . The rooms are spacious and everything looks new."
