PB hotel design editorial

Among Cape Town's working harbour buildings, a Victorian-era warehouse on the waterfront's Pierhead has carried the Victoria & Alfred Hotel since the V&A Waterfront development transformed this precinct in the early 1990s. The facade — rendered in pale grey, its arched windows marching in disciplined rhythm across three storeys beneath a shallow pitched roof — retains the muscular civic confidence of nineteenth-century colonial commercial architecture, while the marina below keeps the building embedded in active harbour life rather than preserved behind it. A recent refurbishment refreshed the 94 rooms toward a palette of bleached oak, warm stone tones, and deep navy upholstery — shell-backed armchairs in textured weave, marble-topped occasional tables, and circular wooden wall sculptures that carry a quiet reference to African craft without tipping into the decorative. The arched windows, retained throughout, frame Table Mountain and the working basin with the matter-of-factness of apertures designed for warehouse function rather than hotel theatre, which makes them all the more effective. On the waterfront terrace, bistro-style rattan chairs at pine tables face the basin directly, tensile canopy structures providing shade without closing off the view to the mountain. The garden pool, sheltered by subtropical planting and bordered in sandstone paving, sits at an unexpected remove from the harbour edge — a moment of seclusion that the rest of this very public, very well-positioned property doesn't otherwise offer.

"I completed a 5-night stay at the Victoria and Alfred hotel and had a pleasant experience. The hotel staff were courteous and helpful. The hotel offers a scrumptious daily breakfast buffet which overlooks Table Mountain, offering beautiful vistas. It's located in the heart of the V&A Waterfront, walking distance to/from a variety of bars, cafes, restaurants, and shops. I look forward to a future visit!"

"Totally recommended; great service, a peaceful atmosphere, and exceptionally helpful staff throughout the hotel. The in-house restaurant, Ginja, was outstanding, offering both excellent quality and a wide variety of yummy food, matched by warm and attentive service. A special shout-out to Ayah, who truly made our experience memorable. As our server, he went above and beyond to make our group feel completely at home. Every request was handled quickly and thoughtfully, often improved by his suggestions and genuine kindness. Everyone at our table was commenting on how fantastic he was and how tasty the food was. We will definitely be returning to this hotel in the future!"

"Fabulous hotel that has managed to maintain the charm of a bygone era with a modern, crisp and comfortable atmosphere. The staff are friendly and accommodating. The food is excellent!! Breakfast consists of a bountiful spread and ala carte is also available. Overlooking Table Mountain, the views from the restaurant are breathtaking. With sufficient indoor and outdoor seating there are enough spots to choose from."

"We have just left this large but cosy hotel. We had a loft room on the 3rd floor which was unusual, clean, warm, had everything you needed. The sloping windows are a feature but I would have liked to be able to see more out of them - they have narrow shutters. But that was my only complaint. The staff were helpful and pleasant, food in the restaurant was reasonably priced and well presented. Breakfast was a pleasure too. The waterfront location is fantastic, you really should stay here."

‏The location is right in the heart of the Waterfront area, making it very convenient and close to most attractions. We booked a spacious room with a mountain view, and it was comfortable and well-sized. ‏The breakfast was fairly good, though it lacked variety, especially for Muslims. However, the hotel staff were excellent—very friendly, helpful, and welcoming. ‏Special thanks to Mr. Jean-Pierre for his kindness and outstanding service. He was extremely helpful throughout our stay and kindly extended our checkout time from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM. ‏I stayed at this hotel twice—once before heading to the Garden Route and once after returning—and both stays were very pleasant. ‏I highly recommend staying here."
