PB hotel design editorial

Rosebank's most recognisable address on Bath Avenue announces itself through a facade of deep red brick, cream-painted Corinthian columns, and arched ground-floor entries that belong firmly to the Edwardian commercial tradition — a building that predates its current hotel life by several decades and carries the massing of a civic institution rather than a hospitality property. 54 on Bath was established within this heritage structure, which rises through a substantial tower addition behind the classical podium, giving the hotel its unusual vertical presence on a Johannesburg street better known for low suburban scale. The Tsogo Sun property holds 75 rooms across multiple floors, the building's bones doing much of the design work before the interiors begin. Inside, the approach is emphatically contemporary against that period shell. Guest rooms are finished in a tightly controlled palette of charcoal, dove grey, and white — geometric diamond-patterned carpets, upholstered headboards in warm linen, tufted velvet benches at the bed foot, and framed photographic panoramas of Johannesburg's evolving skyline hung above the beds as quiet civic pride. The dining room strikes a different register entirely: black-and-white chequerboard marble floors, crimson damask walls, arched sash windows, and houndstooth occasional chairs that mix Edwardian club atmosphere with a lighter contemporary hand. The rooftop pool, framed by white balustrading and open to Highveld sunsets that ignite the western horizon in amber and violet, gives the hotel an unexpected leisure dimension the street-level facade gives no hint of.

"This definitely the nicest Johannesburg Hotel I have stayed in . Firstly super position and walking distance to restaurants and a shopping centre . The decor is refined and elegant with beautiful flowers arrangements all over. Secondly top notch staff from the door man to the restaurant to the reception. We were upgraded to an executive suite with a lounge , dining area and substantial bedroom . We loved the beautiful bed linen and luxurious towels ,plus there were loads of lovely touches like homemade chocolates, macrons; savoury snacks and great coffees. I would recommend having breakfast as it was substantial and delicious plus you can sit in the garden too . This definitely is a must visit ."

"We were not expecting to stay here as we were caught up in the flight mayhem of the war conflict . Whilst that was inconvenient we could not have asked to be put up in a better hotel. It is an elegant hotel with great food and service, especially the breakfast. We also were comforted from the safety aspect as the hotel has direct private access to a large shopping mall where there are many restaurants. The hotel does not have gym facilities on site but has complimentary access to Moove gym also in the mall. I would loved to have used the hotel lap pool but it was far too cold. My only slightly negative comment is that it seems to take a long time to service the rooms as it happens in stages and the nightly turn down only worked for us once on our 4 night stay as it was so late and we wanted earlier nights. That said we would definitely return and we will recommend it. to friends wishing to stay in Johannesburg."

"My wife and I visited this excellent hotel for 3 nights as part of our recent 3 weeks stay at various locations in South Africa. The hotel is situated in Rosebank, Johannesburg and is adjacent to the Rosebank Shopping Centre which can be reached directly from the hotel through a private 'walkway'. The service and food were very good - specific mention must be given to Willard who went out of his way to help with any query we had. Our room (908) was extremely pleasant and amazingly quiet given the hotel is situated in a relatively busy area. Our only minor qualms were: 1. The reference to a 'lobby bar' is slightly misleading as it's really used with drinks often having to be brought down from the 4th floor bar. The management could make greater use of this bar with a limited amount of cosmetic expenditure. See also 2 below. 2. The 4th floor bar is situated adjacent to the restaurant and is split between a small indoor area and larger outdoor area, with some outdoor seating offering sun coverage. The indoor area has very limited seating area and the outdoor area leads directly to a garden and elevated swimming pool. In our view, the hotel would benefit from increasing the size of the indoor area, whilst reconfiguring the garden and pool, by switching them around. We accept that both would cost capital expenditure but would improve the overall layout."

"This was just a two night one day stay while using Johannesburg as a transit hub. Our room on the 8th floor was spacious and clean with plenty of bathroom and beverage amenities, however, the coffee machine, which we’re generally not fans of, was disappointing and took 10 minutes to get ‘hot’. Coffee machines, for us, never produce a hot enough product and we’d prefer the option of coffee sachets and a kettle. Each to their own. We also found the air conditioning rather noisy. The food we had was very good but give yourself plenty of time if you need to be out at a certain time. There is a walkway direct into the adjacent shopping centre which is useful. We felt perfectly safe here but did not venture further afield other than with a guide on a tour. Despite a couple of negative comments we would definitely recommend if looking for a safe short stay."

"Excelent hotel. We stayed in January 2026 two times, while going and coming back from a trip to Namibia and Botswana. 3 nights total in two rooms. We were delighted by the comfort and mainly by the warm and useful reception from all the employees. We loved the breakfasts and dinners. Rooms are big and very comfortably. Tubs are great. The garden and the bar also. It was a very good way to rest some days in Johannesburg while coming and going from the trip."
