PB hotel design editorial

A former bank building on Oxford Road in Rosebank — one of Johannesburg's most commercially active precincts, where the city's post-apartheid reinvention has been most legibly written in glass and concrete — provides voco Johannesburg Rosebank with both its address and its identity. The property trades openly on that heritage: the name The Bank appears on the facade alongside the IHG brand, and the original structure's dark engineering brick exterior, articulated with crisp horizontal banding, gives the building a solidity that newer hospitality developments in the neighbourhood conspicuously lack. The entrance canopy, a cascading installation of hundreds of brass rods catching the Highveld light, signals the interior's ambitions immediately. Those ambitions are most fully realised in the bar and restaurant spaces, where a circular timber-clad island bar crowned by a dramatic suspended wine rack — bottles arranged in concentric tiers above navy velvet stools — anchors a room floored in herringbone terrazzo. The restaurant ceiling deploys layered acoustic panels, warm filament pendants, and trailing greenery in a composition that keeps the volume feeling intimate despite its scale. Guestrooms settle into a quieter register: deep indigo and dusty rose accent walls, tufted tan leather benches at the foot of beds with walnut-flanked headboards, abstract artworks in gilt frames, and navy abstract-patterned carpets that carry the building's financial past into a palette altogether more residential and considered.

"Spent one night here at the end of February ahead of our return to the UK. We arrived around 5pm on a Saturday evening and there was very heavy traffic in the roads surrounding the hotel- it took us 15 minutes to go less than 200 metres. There are a lot of bars and restaurants nearby, and the delays seemed to be caused by Uber drivers picking up an dropping off passengers. Once inside the hotel we were checked in quickly and went up to our room. It was a good size with a large comfortable bed and ample storage space for clothes. The room also had a fridge, a safe and a high spec TV, with tea and coffee making facilities supplied. There was also a good size bathroom with a separate toilet, though both could have done with better lighting. We ate out on the evening of our stay but did have breakfast the next morning in their Proud Mary restaurant. There was a buffet station with a range of cereals, juices, fruits and pastries, and hot items could be ordered from a menu- we were generally very impressed with the range and quality of what was offered. We checked out around 11am and we are able to store our luggage until we returned later in the day to travel to the airport. The hotel is linked to the Rosebank Mall which has an impressive range of shops, bar and restaurants, so we spent some time here after checking out. We enjoyed our short stay at Hyde and thought it was well located and good value for money. If you are staying in Johannesburg for a few days we would recommend staying here."

"This was a perfect stay for those looking for a contemporary lifestyle vibe with clean and comfortable modern rooms and amazing location and food & beverage options. The beds were super comfortable and staff very helpful and accommodating. It would be nice if at checkin they explained more and have a quick tour of the facilities, as we missed out on the speakeasy and wine tasting not realizing it would be closed Sunday. I really loved how the restaurant is also popular with locals so felt like a destination in itself, and the whole vibe of the neighbourhood was really nice and where I’d pick to stay again next time. Perfect for anyone that doesn’t want to be isolated and near great dining options."

"My husband and I visited South Africa for our 12th anniversary in April, 2026. I searched online for hotels as we had never gone to SA. I came across the Hyde Johannesburg Rosebank and did a little research. I am sooo glad that I did. The pictures online do not do it justice. The hotel is absolutely superb!!! The staff, All the staff, were phenomenal. We had such a great, wonderful experience. The food is divine at the restaurants located within. We had the pleasure of visiting Nine Lives, the speakeasy located inside the hotel, and I must say it was an absolute TREAT! I had the rib, and it was falling OFF THE BONE!!!! My husband thoroughly enjoyed his meal as well, although the item escapes me at the moment. Overall, I must say, 20 out of 10, highly recommend!!! To end our stay, one of our luggages somehow managed to somehow to not make it into our uber :-(. We made it all the way to the airport, no phone connection, and our Uber driver could not get through either to the hotel because of the service in the area. My husband was able to connect with Hyde hotel on Facebook (of all places), and reached Morris, the duty manager, who found our piece of luggage, and connected us with MJ, who brought it all the way to the airport within 45 minutes during high traffic time and was able to get it to us timely for us so that we could connect with our flight home. This was sooo very helpful and very much appreciated!!!! We are soooo grateful. Everyone was sooo welcoming and humble. Last, but not least, I would like to shout out to our Guest Relations guide, Tamara, who ensured our stay was beyond pleasant. She often checked in on us daily when she would see us out and about, we chatted while sitting in the beautiful lobby about Soweto and our magnificent tour to Apartheid Musuem. She was so very knowledgeable regarding the culture of South Africa and the hotel. It was TRULY a pleasure meeting her, along with the other staff, during our stay in SA. We will definitely return for another visit soon. I am so grateful to God for allowing us to experience a trip such as this one, and opening our eyes to the culture, gorgeous land, and beautiful animals!! We took pictures and over 100 videos, but they will never be able to truly capture the presence we visually encountered. Again, the Hyde Johannesburg Rosebank, and the STAFF, was a Phenomenal Experience that we will never forget. Thank You!"
