PB hotel design editorial

Few safari properties carry the weight of conservation history that Londolozi does. The Varty family began protecting this stretch of the Sabi Sand in the 1920s, and the camp that grew from that commitment became — through the 1970s and 1980s — a foundational model for how photographic safari lodges could replace hunting culture without sacrificing any of the intimacy with the bush. What the images show is a camp that wears that history lightly: thatched main lodge structures raised on stilts above the riverine forest, their dark timber framing dissolving into the canopy of marula and jackalberry, the whole composition closer to treehouse than hotel. The central lodge pavilion, open to the bush on its deck side, strings clusters of bronze-patinated pendant lights beneath pitched thatch, furnishing the space with a layered mix of African stools, zigzag-patterned cushions, wicker chairs, and sisal rugs that feels genuinely assembled rather than styled. The suites shift register entirely — whitewashed walls, freestanding soaking tubs positioned behind floor-length cream linen curtains, exposed thatch rafters overhead providing the sole textural reference to the wider camp vernacular. Dry-stacked granite walls frame openings that frame plunge pools and the Mabrak riverbed beyond, raw stone set against clean-lined matte steel furniture and woven rattan. Private timber decks, furnished with all-weather wicker chairs and storm lanterns, extend the living space directly into the bushveld at treetop level, dissolving the boundary between interior comfort and the Sabi Sand landscape surrounding it.

"For many years I have followed the Londolozi journey and dreamed of one day visiting this magical place in Sabi Sands. After over a year in the making, this May it became reality... Ironically even more special being the 100th anniversary of Londolozi. After a few days there, I realized no other experience will ever compare, except to return soon! Londolozi is the most perfect place of this planet. The world’s best service and luxury meets comfort meets nature’s greatest wonders. To arrive and walk out onto the deck at Granite Suites where total silence was only broken by the sound of the Sand River was pure heaven. I would describe Granite Suites Camp as understated, casual luxury. Our suite was spacious and so very comfortable. The food was excellent with great menu options to choose from at each meal. The surprise Treehouse luncheon along the Sand River was so special and we got to see two elephant crossings from up there. The boma dinner our last night was such a beautiful experience, filled with hundreds of glimmering lanterns and delicious food. But the heart and soul of Londolozi are the people… from the moment you are met, you are immediately made to feel like you are a part of the beautiful Londolozi family. To our camp manager, Samantha, a huge thank you - You are simply awesome in every way! Our butler Mendrew was so sweet and we always looked forward to seeing and talking to him each morning and evening. To our guide Brandon and our tracker Rich, who made each game drive a unique experience – you guys are truly the best! From seeing leopards to lions to the albino zebra foal, and every beautiful creature in between, paired with learning so much about the animals and their habitat and routines.. to the Sundowners and stargazing… it was so special. Thank you for taking us on a Rhino Tracking Walk and finding the Wild Dogs, and so much more. Brandon, thank you for your assistance in the photo studio as well. I keep wishing for one more day and game drive right now… To the Varty family I say thank you for creating and sharing the most magical place on earth. It was such a pleasure to meet Dave Varty, and so many others that work there and make Londolozi what it is. The Village Walk with Samantha was really enjoyable, and I loved seeing all the wheels in motion and appreciate all you each bring to making it what it is. It's hard to put our experience into words but it truly was a life changing trip. I will always cherish the moments spent with the Londolozi “family” and the memories we brought back with us. I sobbed the day we left, hugging Samantha and Mendrew, and then as Rich and Brandon waved from the airstrip, and I have never in my life left a place with such a yearning to return. Londolozi is an extraordinary place. 10000 stars out of 10 – like the bright stars that light your sky. Happy 100th Londolozi and Ubuntu - I am forever changed because of you."

"This review is long overdue. We had the most exceptional stay at Londolozi Tree Camp to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary! The staff, the accommodations and the abundant animal sightings are what makes this place so magical! Dominick, the camp manager, was very attentive. Highly recommend the village tour. It’s an incredible behind the scenes look into the workings of this 5* safari camp! Our ranger Nick and tracker Euce are a dynamic duo! We had SO much fun with them and learned a ton about the bush, from their extraordinary knowledge and experiences. Euce even convinced me to participate in a walking safari, something that was on my “absolute no way” list prior to our visit! The delicious gin & tonic’s at the beautiful sundowners didn’t hurt in the decision making process! The animal sightings were INCREDIBLE! There was never a dull moment! We truly hope to return to Londolozi some day! Until then, our hearts remain with you all! Highly recommend!!!"

"My husband and I went to Londolozi in mid- October, our first trip to Africa and our first Safari. There is no way to adequately express just how amazing our experience was!! As one other reviewer said, you come as a guest and leave as family. We felt from the minute we arrived that we were in wonderful hands at a truly magical place! Magical is the word I keep coming back to. First, I must say I did a lot of research on various Safari providers in South Africa, and chose Londolozi based on the amazing reviews. I am also an animal lover, and how the wildlife was treated was of utmost importance to me. The staff at Londolozi care deeply, and have for decades, about the wildlife they live with and their well-being. Speaking of which, we saw the so-called Big Five multiple times, and right away.. And so close, it took my breath away. You should scroll down and read the review of March 29, 2025,in which a guest said that he had traveled to all seven continents on wildlife expeditions, and there was nothing that came close to Londolozi, not in Africa or anywhere else. No superlatives can do it justice. Our Ranger Shaun and tracker NT were simply THE BEST!! It was not enough that they found so many amazing animals to see, but Shaun provided so much information about the entire ecosystem, and how each of the species survives within it. Regarding the lodging and creature comforts, I simply can’t imagine anything better! My husband and I have traveled extensively and have stayed at many five-star hotels, appreciate fine hospitality and excellent service. The staff at Londolozi take it to the next level, leaving no stone unturned. We were in Founders Camp and we found it to be flawless, immaculate, comfortable, warm and welcoming. Regarding the food, it was excellent, plentiful and perfectly served. Excellent choices at all meals. And plentiful adult beverages… which is both good and bad if you have to wake up at 5 am, just sayin’! A big shout out to Nico who took wonderful care of us…rrrreally… (a private joke that Nico will understand!) as did Lucy and Katy, the managers of Founders. I will conclude by wishing you a wonderful experience should you make the wise choice to go to Londolozi. We’re already talking about going back!!"

"Londolozi was the experience of a lifetime. We went into this experience thinking it would be a one time trip but we are already planning our return as Londolozi was amazing. You will arrive as a guest and leave as family! Samantha our camp manager, Patrick and Dorance our guide and tracker, Nams our butler and others like Michael and Will made the experience amazing. We saw the big five plus cheetahs, giraffes, hippos, zebras, wild dogs, hyenas, a honey badger and many more. We even saw leopards mating, a field of fire flies, and the Milky Way. The food and beverage program is amazing thanks to Winnie, Kelly and Reward. The rooms are stunning. Everyone we met across the five camps was friendly and fun. If you are looking to book your safari experience please book at Londolozi. For context we have traveled across the globe and enjoyed many five star experiences but nothing as good as Londolozi. We can’t wait to come back!"
