Carved into a rocky hillside above Nambiti Private Game Reserve near Ladysmith in KwaZulu-Natal, a cluster of thatched pavilions steps down the escarpment in a configuration that feels less like architecture imposed on landscape and more like geology that simply resolved itself into habitable form. Esiweni Luxury Safari Lodge takes its name from the Zulu word for place of the cliff, and the aerial view confirms the aptness of that description — thatched rooflines emerge from the indigenous bush canopy, connected by timber boardwalks cantilevered over the slope on wooden stilts, the whole composition dissolving into the hillside rather than announcing itself against it.
