PB hotel design editorial

Carved into a rocky hillside above Nambiti Private Game Reserve near Ladysmith in KwaZulu-Natal, a cluster of thatched pavilions steps down the escarpment in a configuration that feels less like architecture imposed on landscape and more like geology that simply resolved itself into habitable form. Esiweni Luxury Safari Lodge takes its name from the Zulu word for place of the cliff, and the aerial view confirms the aptness of that description — thatched rooflines emerge from the indigenous bush canopy, connected by timber boardwalks cantilevered over the slope on wooden stilts, the whole composition dissolving into the hillside rather than announcing itself against it. Inside, the interiors draw a clear line between the raw and the refined. The main lodge's double-volume living space works rough-hewn log columns and local ironstone walls against polished concrete floors and deep white upholstery punctuated by indigo-printed scatter cushions and woven Zulu basketry arranged as wall art. Guest suites continue the dialogue — exposed thatch ceilings with dark timber rafters overhead, four-poster beds draped in white mosquito net, and freestanding soaking tubs positioned directly before panoramic windows that frame the open bushveld dropping away into the valley below. The infinity pool deck, finished in warm hardwood decking with teak sun loungers, sits at the cliff edge where the reserve stretches uninterrupted to the Drakensberg foothills on the horizon.

"Esiweni Lodge truly exceeded our expectations for our honeymoon! From the moment we got there, we were greeted by the entire staff with a warm welcome. Not only was the lodge absolutely stunning, quiet, and peaceful, but the level of service from the staff we experienced was like nothing we've ever had before. They were extremely attentive to us, and anything we asked for, the answer was yes. There was a bottle of champagne and snacks waiting for us when we arrived. Alex, the manager during our stay was always there when we needed something and was super quick to assist us. Our stay wouldn't have been the same without him! The room was also cleaned and tidied up about 4x a day, and the staff set us up a bubble bath every night after our second game ride! The game rides started at 6am, with coffee and cookies given to us before we left. We came during a cold front, and the truck included ponchos and heated water bottles, which really kept us warm. Robert, our ranger was incredible from day 1. He went out of his way to make sure we saw every animal we wanted to, and got as close to them as possible. On our first game ride, we had a lion and lioness walk right by the car! Lastly, THE FOOD! Esiweni has their own chef, and he is absolutely incredible. Every single meal was tailored towards us - we told him to make some of his favorites, since we're not picky eaters, and it seemed like every meal got better and better every day, with the portion sizes being huge. He also came out to check on us after every meal. During each meal, the wait staff was incredibly attentive, friendly, warm, and welcoming. The food came out so quickly, they pulled out a chair for us every time we sat down, and everything was just perfect. On our last night, they set up a surprise traditional African BBQ where we sat around the fire and enjoyed the delicious food and drinks. Esiweni truly made our honeymoon an unforgettable experience. We would highly recommend them to anyone traveling to South Africa for a Safari experience. The level of quality and service was unmatched. We just got back a week ago, and we already miss the entire staff. We hope to be back one day soon!"

"Our trip to Esiweni Lodge far exceeded our expectations for an authentic safari experience in a luxury lodge. There is no need to book a tour. We were picked up from the Intercontinental Hotel at Tambo International Airport. The your and a half hour drive to the private Nambiti Reserve was arranged by Sophie at Esiweni. Transit around the reserve with Pimba, professional tracker and driver, was thrilling. We saw all the expected animals in a well maintained and balanced environment. There were two safari game drives a day that included the best coffee break stops and sun downer views complete with local treats and libations! Life at the lodge couldn’t be better. The attentive staff included chef John and chef Alex who will thrill the most demanding palates. Zoe, Dela and the rest of the crew thought of everything to make each day special. We had the lodge coordinate a sunrise balloon ride and transportation to Durban as well as a visit to a local Zulu school which the Lodge supports."
