PB hotel design editorial

Myeongdong's commercial electricity — the neon, the street food vendors, the compression of bodies and signage — makes it one of Seoul's least likely addresses for a hotel with genuine design ambitions. Hotel28 Myeongdong, which joined Small Luxury Hotels of the World on opening, wears its urban context directly: the street-level facade is clad in rough-textured stacked stone, its horizontal banding cut by wide steel-framed windows and black pennant banners, the whole composition holding its ground against the surrounding retail chaos without retreating from it. A rooftop terrace strung with festoon lighting frames the Lotte Department Store tower and the broader Junggu skyline in a way that feels more like a neighbourhood bar than a hotel amenity. Inside, the rooms settle into a considered Nordic-influenced palette — pale oak flooring, grey-toned concrete-effect wall panels, charcoal throw blankets over white bedding, swing-arm reading lights mounted flush to oak headboard panels. Black-and-white photography above each bed supplies the only graphic gesture, grounding the rooms without decorative excess. The all-day dining space on an upper floor takes a different register entirely: exposed black-painted ceiling services, Carrara marble-topped communal tables, navy banquette seating, and rattan bistro chairs in a Parisian café inflection that catches considerable natural light through the full-height street-facing glazing. The two moods — quiet Scandinavian restraint upstairs, animated brasserie energy at table — give Hotel28 a range that most properties in this price register never attempt.

"We were warmly welcomed by the friendly staff at Hotel 28. I had booked two nights separately in different accommodations. They worked hard to make adjustments to our reservation, so we didn’t have to change rooms. They answered any questions we had, mades suggestions for restaurants and things to do. We appreciated their hospitality. We had breakfast at many hotels in Asia, but the breakfast here stood out. The location couldn’t be better. This is a lovely boutique hotel."

"Hotel28 is a very comfortable oasis in the bustling Myeongdong area and the staff at Hotel28 are exceptional. Jinny gave our taxi driver directions from the airport and came out to get us with an umbrella when we were dropped off at the end of the street. Jinny and Sugar helped us with organising our train tickets to other parts of Korea and to a K League football match. We would highly recommend Hotel 28 to anyone visiting Seoul."

"The Hotel 28 Myeongdong is an excellent small hotel in every sense of the word, and I would recommend it to anyone visiting Seoul. What makes this hotel exceptional is the professionalism and courtesy of the staff and in particular for my wife and I, one of the receptionists named Amanda. Arriving at Seoul Station from Incheon Airport on a cold and very wet night, and with heavy luggage,we found it impossible to hire a taxi to take us to the hotel. After an hour of trying, a desparate phone call to the Hotel 28 was answered by Amanda. Not only did she organise a taxi to pick us up, she followed up with several phone calls to both me and the taxi drivert o ensure our safe arrival at the hotel. Amanda's help did not stop there. It concluded after she personally escorted us to our room. My wife and I in our late seventies and without Amanda's help, our first visit to Seoul would not have been such a memorable experience.
