PB hotel design editorial

Directly opposite Dongdaemun Gate — one of the great surviving landmarks of the Joseon dynasty, its illuminated eaves visible in the night-sky photograph from across the intersection — the JW Marriott Dongdaemun Square was designed by the Seoul-based practice Heerim Architects and opened in 2014. The building's rounded chamfered corners and limestone-clad grid of deep-set windows give the ten-storey structure a solidity that feels deliberate in this context: measured rather than assertive, allowing the ancient gate to hold its own on the skyline without competition. Inside, the interiors move between two registers. Guestrooms work in warm taupes and dark-stained timber, leather-upholstered platform beds set against tall panelled headboards in tobacco brown, with floor-to-ceiling windows framing the dense mid-city grain of the Dongdaemun district below. The rooftop bar shifts the mood entirely — wide-plank oak flooring, a lacquered grand piano, bronze-patinated ceiling panels, and a black marble bar counter trimmed in polished nickel all combine to produce something closer to a 1930s jazz supper club than a contemporary hotel lounge. The lobby lounge takes a softer approach, pairing cream barrel chairs and a landscape-patterned carpet in ochre and slate with full-height glazing that frames a small planted courtyard. Across its 170 rooms, the hotel manages the considerable difficulty of sitting beside one of Seoul's most historically charged intersections without either deferring to it or ignoring it.

"My wife and I spent 9 amazing nights at the JW Marriott Dongdaemun Square Seoul a luxury 5-star hotel. From the moment we arrived late in the night staff were exceptional. The greeting we received were both warm and friendly. The view from our suite of the Heunginjimun Gate was breathtaking both by night and day. The hotel is centrally located with the subway easily accessible by going down to the level where the Bakery is situated. The Bakery is a must to visit with a wide range of delicious cakes and pastries. The staff in the Executive Lounge greeted us warmly on all occasions. They were always helpful in answering all questions. The nightly canapes were always of a high standard. Staff consistently engaged with members belonging to the Executive Club. Breakfast at Tavalo 24 is an experience of its own wide a wide selection of food. It was difficult to choose which option on each visit. The dinner buffet had amazing variety of food including seafood. We would like to thank Logan for his kindness and fabulous suggestions both at breakfast and dinner. A special thanks to Justin for consistently showing warmth and kindness. A special thanks to Ember in the Lounge whose vibrant personality and tremendous service. We enjoyed numerous moments of laughter and engaging discussions alongside her. She is a true asset to JW Marriott. The pool and spa are excellent for relaxing with a separate area for children. The gym is extensive, for those who enjoy golf there is an inhouse golf range. Each day our suite was beautifully maintained. The housekeeping team were cheerful and greeted everyone with a smile. A special thank you to Michael Park Executive Chef and Brad In for the delightful food they prepared for us. We had plenty of conversations and shared lots of laughter together. Their team were professional and a pleasure to interact with. Throughout our stay the Concierge and Reception team were always warm, friendly, and extremely helpful. A special thank you to Daeny and Howard organising tours and directions around Seoul. We would like to thank Alex Lee General Manager and all his exceptional staff throughout the JW Marriott. They contributed to making our first trip to Seoul a true experience. My wife and I will fondly remember the family at the JW Marriott. Until we visit again. Highly recommend JW Marriott Dongdaemun Square Seoul"

"The hotel is generally nice but the major problem remains that we were assigned a room with a window facing a wall (see photo) for our entire stay. We arrived after mid-night and were told a quiet room was assigned. I raised this as a problem (I called it a dungeon room) with the front desk the next morning but they couldn't/didn't want to do anything as I was told that we got this room due to the room rate paid. To be clear, the rate/night was not cheap for the room type even during the Easter holiday - I paid for a Deluxe Guest Room from the Bonvoy member's app, which shows the room with window views of the Dongdaemun in 2 of its 3 room photos. From that, to a window with a wall only a couple of metres away, is categorically different. And then imagine you were stuck with it for 4 nights for a holiday travel. Every time we entered the room, the curtain automatically opens, as if to present its guests this amazing window view of ... ... ... a flat wall. While the curtain function is by default, I found it particularly ironic in the situation - all it needed was a little bit of music to make it a comedy. It amused me a little in the end, but this type of room should be clearly labelled and communicated before any booking. The rest of the hotel were pleasant: 1. Tavalo for breakfast - excellent for both the food and the staff 2. The Lounge (lobby lounge for food& beverage) - good 3. Swimming pool & Gym - beautiful design & top facilities 4. Hotel location - good and convenient (DDP, the canal nearby and a village along the ancient wall by Dongdaemun gate are all within walking distance of the hotel; the hotel lower ground floor is connected to the underground) 5. The complimentary gifts on arrival were nice and well presented (I'm a gold member) 6. Hotel design/maintenance - very good. It's the first time I saw a Marriott hotel giving a spotlight to its mascot (and the first time I learnt it's a griffin). They even have the rooftop bar named The Griffin which sadly I couldn't visit, as our young child was with us. I mulled between a 3 and 4 rating but decided on a 4, largely due to the overall stay being pleasant and I think it has endearing features/service to offer. The policy for the labelling of wall-facing rooms should be reviewed."

"We had an amazing stay at this hotel. All the staff we encountered were very proactive and helpful in our needs. At the check in, we had a little misunderstanding with our booking but Daeny and Ben were very understanding and matters were resolved quickly! During our stay, we encountered Oliver, Noah and John who were always there to assist us in our transport. Noah was extremely helpful when our KakaoTaxi didn’t arrive and cancelled on us. He was always checking up on us and offered to book taxi for us. Luckily the uber taxi arrived without further delay. Also special mention to Casey in the guest services for helping us resolve our shower and bathroom issue quickly and promptly. We didn’t have further problems with our stay. The breakfast was also amazing, worth getting one! We left the hotel happily! Thank you, JW Seoul!"

"** JW Marriott Dongdaemun Square Seoul ** Our stay at the JW Marriott Dongdaemun Square was exceptional, not only because of the beautiful property and outstanding location, but above all because of the people who bring this hotel to life. The hotel itself is elegant, calm, and perfectly positioned beside one of Seoul’s most historic and vibrant districts. The rooms are spacious and thoughtfully designed, offering both comfort and functionality, while the public spaces strike a rare balance between sophistication and warmth. What truly sets this hotel apart, however, is the team (aka the people). On arrival I met Amy, the Duty Manager. She was a standout, dynamic, professional, articulate, and genuinely warm. Her leadership presence was immediately felt, and the thoughtful surprise gift she arranged at checkout was a lovely and unexpected touch that perfectly captured the spirit of hospitality. At the 2F buffet restaurant, Sally greeted us each morning with a level of warmth and positivity that could brighten even the darkest day, always pleasant, attentive, and smiling. James impressed us with his quiet efficiency and flair; he took my order and delivered a perfectly made, piping-hot café latte in 90 seconds. John, one of the doormen standing outside in the cold Seoul winter, left a lasting impression by remembering us from our visit a year ago and welcoming us back by name. That simple moment spoke volumes about the hotel’s culture and attention to detail. In the Executive Lounge, Lina was incredibly helpful in assisting us with arranging a doctor’s appointment, handling it with calm professionalism and genuine care. Anna, a leader in the lounge, demonstrated a level of maturity, polish, and quiet confidence that reflects very well on the hotel and its service standards. Finally, special thanks to Hani and Jenny, who supported us through a particularly difficult request. They handled it with speed, empathy, and precision, turning a stressful situation into one that felt fully supported and resolved. This is a beautiful property in a wonderful location, but more importantly, what makes this hotel truly special is its people. I would return without hesitation and recommend the JW Marriott Dongdaemun Square without hesitation!"
