PB hotel design editorial

Directly opposite Dongdaemun Gate — one of the great surviving landmarks of the Joseon dynasty, its illuminated eaves visible in the night-sky photograph from across the intersection — the JW Marriott Dongdaemun Square was designed by the Seoul-based practice Heerim Architects and opened in 2014. The building's rounded chamfered corners and limestone-clad grid of deep-set windows give the ten-storey structure a solidity that feels deliberate in this context: measured rather than assertive, allowing the ancient gate to hold its own on the skyline without competition. Inside, the interiors move between two registers. Guestrooms work in warm taupes and dark-stained timber, leather-upholstered platform beds set against tall panelled headboards in tobacco brown, with floor-to-ceiling windows framing the dense mid-city grain of the Dongdaemun district below. The rooftop bar shifts the mood entirely — wide-plank oak flooring, a lacquered grand piano, bronze-patinated ceiling panels, and a black marble bar counter trimmed in polished nickel all combine to produce something closer to a 1930s jazz supper club than a contemporary hotel lounge. The lobby lounge takes a softer approach, pairing cream barrel chairs and a landscape-patterned carpet in ochre and slate with full-height glazing that frames a small planted courtyard. Across its 170 rooms, the hotel manages the considerable difficulty of sitting beside one of Seoul's most historically charged intersections without either deferring to it or ignoring it.

"** JW Marriott Dongdaemun Square Seoul ** Our stay at the JW Marriott Dongdaemun Square was exceptional, not only because of the beautiful property and outstanding location, but above all because of the people who bring this hotel to life. The hotel itself is elegant, calm, and perfectly positioned beside one of Seoul’s most historic and vibrant districts. The rooms are spacious and thoughtfully designed, offering both comfort and functionality, while the public spaces strike a rare balance between sophistication and warmth. What truly sets this hotel apart, however, is the team (aka the people). On arrival I met Amy, the Duty Manager. She was a standout, dynamic, professional, articulate, and genuinely warm. Her leadership presence was immediately felt, and the thoughtful surprise gift she arranged at checkout was a lovely and unexpected touch that perfectly captured the spirit of hospitality. At the 2F buffet restaurant, Sally greeted us each morning with a level of warmth and positivity that could brighten even the darkest day, always pleasant, attentive, and smiling. James impressed us with his quiet efficiency and flair; he took my order and delivered a perfectly made, piping-hot café latte in 90 seconds. John, one of the doormen standing outside in the cold Seoul winter, left a lasting impression by remembering us from our visit a year ago and welcoming us back by name. That simple moment spoke volumes about the hotel’s culture and attention to detail. In the Executive Lounge, Lina was incredibly helpful in assisting us with arranging a doctor’s appointment, handling it with calm professionalism and genuine care. Anna, a leader in the lounge, demonstrated a level of maturity, polish, and quiet confidence that reflects very well on the hotel and its service standards. Finally, special thanks to Hani and Jenny, who supported us through a particularly difficult request. They handled it with speed, empathy, and precision, turning a stressful situation into one that felt fully supported and resolved. This is a beautiful property in a wonderful location, but more importantly, what makes this hotel truly special is its people. I would return without hesitation and recommend the JW Marriott Dongdaemun Square without hesitation!"

"Astonishing Stay at JW. The rooms and launge are very elegant. Great location. Breakfast and exec Launge very comprehensive. The big star is the BLTSteakhouse. Jeremy the manager is outstanding. His top nutch service and his team are outstanding. Try the cheese bread with butter inside. A MUST.The quality is better than many steakhouses in NYC and a reasonable price. The service is excellent. I recommend all the Wagyu cuts and the rack of lambs. Wonderful wine selection. They got lunch fix menus and dinner as well."

"Excellent location with subway station on lower level so it is easy to get anywhere in Seoul. So nice to walk along the stream right outside too. Lots of shopping and restaurants a few blocks walk close to DDP. The staff here are fantastic-so helpful, especially the girls working in the executive lounge. And the lounge is classy and quiet with good selection of food items and drinks for bonvoy members. The fitness centre is huge with top end equipment-best we have ever seen in a hotel. Pool area and hot tub is lovely. Room was spacious, comfortable bed and view of the old city wall and gate. Highly recommend staying here!"
