PB hotel design editorial

Facing Seoul City Hall plaza across one of the capital's most historically charged roundabouts, a seventeen-storey block of warm-toned stone and gridded windows has anchored Taepyeongno since 1976. The Plaza Seoul, which joined Marriott's Autograph Collection after a comprehensive renovation, holds a position in the city's civic geography that few hotels anywhere can claim — directly opposite the neo-Renaissance City Hall, with Namdaemun Gate visible down the boulevard and N Seoul Tower catching the evening light over the roofline in the distance. The renovation introduced two distinct personalities under one roof. Floors given over to the Club rooms carry a restrained palette of bleached oak panelling, dark walnut furniture with circular cutouts, and cream upholstery punctuated by acid-yellow accent lamps — warm and considered, with the measured confidence of mid-2000s Seoul design at its most assured. The Boutique floors take a different register entirely: aubergine walls, mauve lacquered ceilings, and sharp black-and-white scatter cushions give those rooms the atmosphere of a contemporary art hotel. The lobby bar makes the strongest visual statement in the building, its dark coffered ceiling punctuated by oversized circular backlit panels suspended above curved leather banquettes and zebrawood tables, with fringed pendant lights in deep plum adding theatricality. High on the building, the indoor pool sits behind a full curtain wall of cross-braced glazing, white colonnades and aqua mosaic tile giving the space an unexpectedly classical composure above the Seoul skyline.

"The only thing I would recommend about this hotel is the great location for seeing the sights and central for trains and buses. Despite an odd check-in experience which we attempted at 2 pm (check-in is usually 3 pm) which was not very friendly or informative our stay was uneventful. Apparently you are placed on a check-in queue but they don't update you so you juct have to keep checking at the desk. The bell staff were very helpful throughout our stay with directions and transportation information. It's an odd hotel layout with 2 buildings and underground. The rooms are small, a little outdated and had strange lighting fixtures. When we walked in we thought maybe we were on a risque movie set, so definitely not family friendly. As a Bonvoy Member I think I would stay at one of the other Marriott hotels next time."

"Very convenient location. Problems with cleaning - serious (after „cleaning” bathroom you have to ask for it being re-done). Often times staff do not communicate in English. We had a room with an impressive view of a wall."

"I cannot praise this hotel enough. We had an absolutely amazing stay for 4 nights in June 2026. The location is fantastic, close to all sorts of attractions as well as subway entrances. The staff is extremely attentive and strive to make everything about your stay pleasant. We were also very impressed with their accommodations for Marriott Bonvoy members. We will be back to Seoul and will stay here again."

"We had 2 rooms - each with 2 double beds overlooking the City Hall ‘lawn’. We checked in at the 5th floor member reception and our bags were quickly delivered to the rooms. Our rooms were inexpensive and they were rather tight but were well appointed and there was plenty of storage space and excellent AC. The beds were on the firm side, but bedding was excellent. Bathroom was small but had decent vanity space, a good rain shower and fancy programmable toilet (we’ll miss that when we leave Asia!!) We had CNN and BBC to watch! The Lounge on the 5th floor was a real advantage - great breakfast and evening meal/appetizers. The Plaza team was truly the highlight of this stay; Callum particularly was so helpful. He checked us in and then helped me order and take delivery of a ($12) TENS machine (my husband pinched a nerve in his neck 4 days earlier and his left arm was numb/painful). It was delivered to our room the following evening - worked a treat. Callum helped with everything we needed or asked for and everyone at the hotel was incredibly respectful, polite and kind. We were really blown away by the Korean culture and the vibe in the city. The Gyeongbokgung Palace is a 20minute walk away and well worth the trip - beautiful complex! We visited on the day Korea played Mexico in round 1 of the World Cup. There was a huge street watch party which we joined briefly. Mexico won 1-0 in the end, but the crowd was upbeat, respectful and calm even in defeat. Some other nations could take note …. Shopping is 15mins to the SE of the hotel and there are Starbucks and 7-11 stores on virtually every street corner so you’re never in need!!! You can also connect to many areas via the underground tunnels which can be accessed directly below the hotel. It was a wonderful 3 day visit and we’d definitely come back again - not least for the incredible and highly consistent customer service."

"In practically every way, this is a top-notch hotel that meets every guest's needs with excellence. The location is perhaps the best in all of Seoul, directly overlooking the central plaza of City Hall, the subway just a few meters from the entrance, and a rear entrance on a local street packed with restaurants, pubs, and various clubs. The subway (exit 6) is served by the highly useful Lines 1 (the southwest-northeast diametrical line that also reaches Incheon) and 2, the urban circular line that directly serves almost all of the city's must-see attractions. The City Hall stop is just one stop on Line 1 from Seoul Central Station, which is also the terminal for the AREX high-speed train that connects to the ICN intercontinental airport. There is also a bus stop around the corner, served by numerous lines, including the main tourist routes. The building is luxurious and modern, with splendid, sumptuous interiors and a futuristic design. The room wasn't huge for a hotel of this caliber (but it wasn't small either), but it was comfortable, always clean, technologically advanced, and equipped with every convenience. The spaces were ergonomically designed, and the bathroom was sparkling, featuring both a bathtub and a shower. Breakfast was plentiful and high-quality, and there was also a gym and pool available. The staff was exceptionally courteous and helpful, knowledgeable, and attentive, ready to accommodate even the most unusual requests. For example, when I first arrived, my credit cards were having trouble being recognized by automatic machines like subway ticket machines and ATMs. A very kind receptionist personally loaded my weekly public transport pass onto the card, and she also provided me with cash that I couldn't withdraw. The staff speaks English fluently (which is not a given in Korea). Highly recommended!"
