PB hotel design editorial

Beneath a glass-and-steel pavilion added atop its nineteenth-century limestone facade, the Claris Hotel & Spa GL on Carrer del Pau Claris pulls off one of Barcelona's more quietly audacious architectural conjunctions. The base structure is the Palau Vedruna, an 1892 neoclassical palace whose pedimented windows, figurative stone carvings, and rusticated ground floor survive intact along the Eixample streetline — while the upper two floors were rebuilt as a transparent modern addition housing the rooftop pool deck, restaurant, and garden terraces. That pool level, lined with hardwood decking and latticed steel sunloungers, surveys the Dreta de l'Eixample's octagonal block grid from a perch the original architects could not have imagined. Inside, the 124 rooms pursue a different kind of layering. Some carry gold-leaf coffered ceilings and burnished amber headboards that give the atmosphere of a Japoniste cabinet; others expose sections of original fresco beneath dark-framed four-poster beds, their aged-mirror wardrobe panels doubling the soft light from sheer linen curtains. The rooftop restaurant extends under a billowing tensile canopy above a living green wall thick with monstera and palm, white powder-coated wire chairs pulled up to white-clothed tables on layered indigo rugs — a composition that manages, somehow, to feel like a garden rather than a hotel amenity. Throughout, the Claris treats its own antiquity not as a constraint but as raw material.

"Very grateful to Mayo and Eric, the hotel’s concierges! They were able to secure difficult tickets for my family and I 😊 Thank you gentlemen!"

"My family and I waited two whole years for this trip. A lot of strategic planning went into carefully selecting the right hotel, transportation, etc. because I have a mobility scooter. When we arrived, we were checked in by a front desk agent in training. No problem, however, I was placed in a room that was literally impossible to get my mobility scooter in the room without actually having to pick it up and carry it. Since I recently had emergency surgery, that was not possible, so I had to have my son who was staying a few doors down, come and help his brother carry the scooter in and out of the room everytime I needed to leave. Such an inconvenience, especially for a 5 star hotel when they have other floorplans that were much more easier to navigate. When I went down stairs and reported the issue, I had to explain myself four separate times before the rude front desk agent said, we can store it downstairs in the luggage room for you. Thank you but no thank you as this is not something I trust anyone with. This is literally the only method I have to get around, so I am not leaving the care of my scooter nor the responsibility to charge it to someone else. Then it was time to take a shower. As I said, I am a customer with mobility issues. So, the use of the room shower was impossible and getting in the very high tub was extremely worst. So, I had to improvise, something a customer should never have to do. Then when my son went up to the roof top to enjoy the food he bought, he was told he had to leave and given the reason that no otherwise food is allowed at the roof top. We did not see no signs saying no otherwise food and were not told this. So, in other words, if you want to enjoy the view at roof top, either you have to buy their food or nothing at all regardless if you are a paying customer staying in their hotel. Lastly, the invasion of privacy was appalling. While laying in the room relaxing and while my son was in the shower, the housekeeping attendant just walked in the room with two chocolates and a rose. When she noticed I was in the room she apologized for entering while laughing and contined doing what she came in to do which was to drop off a rose and two chocolates. When she noticed there was no vase for the rose, she opened the bathroom door and walked right in the bathroom to look for a vase while my son was naked and showering. The audacity to just violate someone's privacy! In all the 30 years I have been traveling, this never ever happened, but to happen at a 5 star luxury hotel is crazy!!!! On that note, I definitely will be contacting Hilton Corporate office directly. The violation of privacy and lack of accessibility is something I feel they should be made aware of."

"I don’t know if this is the standard for a five-star hotel, but at this price point, I expected a much higher level of quality. The people are undoubtedly the hotel’s greatest asset. The staff was genuinely warm, welcoming, and eager to help. Unfortunately, the property itself falls short in several key areas: * No Netflix or modern streaming options. * The minibar offered little to poor options. * The Wi-Fi connection is unreliable. * The in-room phones don’t work properly. * Room service was well below what I’d expect from a luxury hotel. For the rates being charged, I expected a true five-star experience, and unfortunately, this hotel didn’t deliver. If you want it to hit a little harder while still sounding professional, I can make it more pointed without coming across as unfair."

"A beautiful hotel in a great location. Easy access to public transport to get around the city but equally as much to see and do locally to the hotel. The staff are friendly and attentive. Our room was spotless and was made up beautifully every day. The rooftop bar and pool is superb. There are only 8 sunbeds but we managed to get some time on a sunbed most days. There is no shade around the pool but there is shade on the seated areas and sofas in the bar area for some respite from the sun. Evening drinks on the terrace are a must, it’s simply stunning and very chilled. Breakfast was fantastic with a range of egg options cooked to order. A great base from which to explore Barcelona!"
