PB hotel design editorial

A 1920s Beaux-Arts office building on Via Laietana — the boulevard carved through Barcelona's medieval fabric at the turn of the century — gives Grand Hotel Central its essential character: nine floors of cream-rendered pilasters, dentil cornices, and arched ground-floor openings that carry the self-important grandeur of early commercial Barcelona without ever tipping into pastiche. Converted into a 147-room hotel in 2008, the property sits at the boundary where the Gothic Quarter presses against the Eixample grid, a position that places Montjuïc, the Sagrada Família, and the twin towers of the Port Olímpic all within the rooftop eyeline simultaneously. The interiors work a considered restraint against the facade's elaboration — dark-stained timber wall panels framing upholstered headboards in pale linen, warm oak floors, and grey tweed benches with nailhead trim that keep the rooms feeling more like a considered private apartment than a hotel category. Bistro Helena, the ground-floor restaurant visible from the street, deploys forest-green velvet banquettes, cognac leather dining chairs, exposed Edison-filament chandelier clusters, and a large-format portrait in monochrome ink against walls in deep charcoal — a palette that sits closer to a Parisian brasserie than to conventional Barcelona hospitality. The rooftop, its teak deck lined with matte-black sun loungers beside an infinity pool, frames the compressed terracotta panorama of the old city against the distant silhouette of Jean Nouvel's Torre Agbar.

"It was one of the nicest best hotels I've stayed at in all of Europe, quite honestly. I stay at hotels 200 nights out of the year (admittedly, not such nice ones as the Grand Hotel Central) but this one was incredibly special. The interior design, the staff, the room organization, the rooftop pool. So so good. The doorman came out and walked across the street to get our luggage as we arrived on the opposite side of the street from the hotel entrance. The food at breakfast and the hotel restaurant (Can Bo) was splendid and we were treated like real important guests of the hotel. Real Spanish hospitality. The only downside was that I was charged an excessive 20EUR for a broken basic room glass but the hotel was otherwise superb and we loved staying here. We would do it again anytime."

"While the hotel itself is beautiful, don’t book because of the pool. There are only eight loungers for 146 rooms. We attempted to use the pool during our stay but were told it had to be reserved in advance and there were no spots available, yet no one communicated that to use prior. Therefore one of the main reasons for booking the hotel is not a realistic amenity. Furthermore, I was charged €30 for a cloth laundry bag that probably cost €2 to produce. I have stayed as hundreds of hotels around the world, of this caliber and higher. Never once have I been charged for a laundry bag. The management was insistent on this fee, which seems very low brow to me, considering the class of hotel."

"Staff was great and always helpfull, made a great atmosphere; room cleaning was amazing with nice touch of chocolates. In well sized room you find everything you need for your stay including well stocked mini bar. Terazza offers amazing views, which makes enjoying your drinks even better. Next visit of Barcelona this is definetly my pick."

"Just stayed for 5 nights here and loved every bit of it. Where will i start? We arrived early and they worked very hard to get us into our room ….in by 11 am which was terrific. Front of house staff, obliging and excellent. Our room was terrific…see photos. Very light with plenty of windows…we were in a corner room which was terrific (room 424) Here is my only gripe……..not enough cupboard space and no drawers… (we travel heavy!)…anyhow we sorted ourselves out well. Bed was to die for along with the pillows. Bathroom very well appointed and quite large. Substantial mini bar (as always substantial prices ) The breakfast was buffet style and again very good along with excellent staff always friendly and happy to oblige . The rooftop pool and restaurant were terrific although whilst we were there it was just too hot to sit for long. You need to book the loungers which is a good idea so you dont get any lounge hogs! Sadly the sauna was under maintenance …pity as i love a sauna. Housekeeping 10/10 We dined at the restaurant CanBo which again was terrific ..started with a Negroni at the bar ! Downsides? It was a bit noisy at nighttime even on the fourth floor away from the street….but everyone her in Spain was groping nuts about the World Cup All in all i would stay here again in a blink."
