PB hotel design editorial

Those bas-relief pilasters flanking the entrance — figures carved in a severe, allegorical register somewhere between Art Deco and Catalan Noucentisme — belong to a former bank building on Passeig de Gràcia that the Mandarin Oriental Barcelona has made its own since opening in 2009. The property, designed by architect Carlos Ferrater with interiors by Patricia Urquiola, sits on one of the Eixample's most scrutinized blocks, surrounded by Modernista landmarks, yet holds its ground through restraint rather than competition. Ferrater preserved the heavy granite facade and its sculptural programme while carving out 120 rooms and suites across eight floors behind it. Urquiola's interiors move between warmth and precision in a way that feels distinctly Barcelonese — wide-plank oak floors, deep navy headboards upholstered in velvet, mustard Husk chairs by B&B Italia, and circular wool rugs anchoring the sitting areas in the larger rooms. The restaurant, Moments, has a floating gold-leaf ceiling panel that hovers above cream upholstered armchairs and floor-to-ceiling views into a dense tropical garden, the effect more greenhouse pavilion than formal dining room. Above it all, the rooftop infinity pool stretches along the building's length with the domed cupola of the Reial Acadèmia de Ciències filling the skyline to one side and Tibidabo marking the horizon beyond — a view that earns its elevation without announcing it.

"I went for a Short break with my sister and my nephew and we couldn't expect more. This beautiful property is nicely located in one of the most popular area in Barcelona. The level of service is litterally outstanding and the quality of amenities and food provided is excellent . A special thank to Ekaterine from breakfast who made us feeling special from the very first moment. She is indeed the highlight of the stay. Thank you also to Luigi (concierge) and Victoria (breakfast)for their kind welcome. We cannot wait to come back."

"Our first time at a Mandarin Oriental did not disappoint. From the moment the friendly porters helped us with our luggage at the entrance of the hotel, we could tell this was going to be a special stay. After the pleasant check-in, in the lobby, we were offered the option to visit the Terrat by Hublot rooftop bar until our room was ready, since we had arrived a couple of hours before the check in. Although we would have loved to change and shower and get comfortable right away after our long flights, our time at the rooftop bar was relaxing, the food and drinks were delicious and time went by faster than anticipated. The room we had was not big or overly luxurious but it was very clean, quiet and had a nice view of Passeig de Gràcia and a small view of Casa Batllo. The bed was comfortable, the amenities were fantastic and the wifi and tv worked great. We loved the bathroom, and although again it wasn’t very large, it was comfortable enough and had a good layout. The shower was large and the water pressure was out of this world, probably the strongest water pressure we have ever experienced anywhere. The service we had during our entire stay was top notch - everyone was so genuinely friendly and helpful. The security was great at the hotel, and even with that, it seemed that everyone knew us there after check-in and we were never questioned and we were indeed welcomed warmly each time we came in. Our first night the concierge recommended a great tapas bar and made a reservation for us even if it was a little late at night and we loved it so much, it was a fantastic way to start our vacation. The included breakfast buffet we had each morning was delicious. The food did not vary each morning but the quality and service were excellent. Aside from the buffet foods, you could order other items from the à la carte menu such as omelettes or eggs Benedict which came pretty fast and were very tasty. The Mandarin Oriental Barcelona also has its own Michelin star restaurant called Moments which is fabulous (I wrote a separate review for it ) , and the Bankers bar was very cool and the drinks were great. Room service was really great - they did a fantastic job cleaning the room, and the amazing thing is that we never saw any carts on the hallways, it is like they just appeared and disappeared and poof the room was clean. The in room dining was also absolutely delicious - we had dinner once and breakfast once. One particular morning we had a very early tour, and not only was the breakfast buffet not open so early but even the breakfast items for in-room dining were not served that early (there were certain 24 hour items on the menu but they were not suitable for us for breakfast), so we happened to talk to our head waiter and she said it would be absolutely no problem for them to make a special breakfast for us even before 6am and serve it in our room, which they did perfectly - now that’s service! The only minor hiccup during our stay was that both of our keycards stopped working 2 days before checkout so we had to go to the lobby to get them re-programmed. Our introduction to the Mandarin Oriental was fantastic and we look forward to stay at many more of their properties throughout the world. Thank you to the entire Mandarin Oriental Barcelona team for an amazing stay."

"an exceptional experience, as always. The location is perfect, offering both convenience and comfort(parking offered makes it even more convenient for mobile travellers). The service throughout the hotel was impeccable - attentive, professional, and genuinely warm. The high level of security is esecially appreciated. Expect smart design of rooms, which make stay even more comfortable. We booked two rooms and hotel staff complementarily upgraded one of the rooms’ category and offered connecting apartments. Lovely The only slightly disappointing aspect was the bar staff - one of the bar staff’s behavior was unexpectedly brusque, which felt out of character for the Mandarin Oriental brand. In addition, the restaurant interior seemed unusually modest compared to the typically elegant style of the group. That said, the dining experience itself, including the breakfasts, was excellent, as always. Overall, Mandarin Oriental remains a benchmark of quality and elegance despite a couple of minor shortcomings. Recomend"
