PB hotel design editorial

At the corner of Passeig de Gràcia and Carrer de la Diputació, where the Eixample's chamfered blocks carry some of Barcelona's most celebrated Modernista facades, a six-storey building originally completed in the early twentieth century provided the shell for Monument Hotel. The exterior — warm brick rising above an ornate stone base dressed with wrought-iron balconies and Gothic-inflected crestwork — belongs entirely to its neighbourhood, yet the interiors by Lazaro Rosa-Violán work a deliberate counterpoint: the Barcelona studio's signature layering of raw materials given a warmer, more sensuously domestic register than usual. Exposed handmade brick in amber and terracotta runs across bedroom walls, offset by continuous panels of pale European oak — on floors laid in herringbone, on ceilings, on full-height joinery screens that divide sleeping and sitting areas without closing them off. Pendant globes in frosted glass, leather sofas in caramel tones, and hammered-brass side tables complete a palette that keeps the energy of the street outside without importing its noise. The rooftop pool terrace shifts register entirely: a teak deck edged with sculptural white planters and wicker day beds opens beside a glazed pavilion framed in black steel, the city's roofline stretching south toward the sea. Below, the hotel's restaurant deploys a perforated brass ceiling above oak parquet and a steel-framed wine wall, chandelier filaments suspended in loose organic cascades that echo the Modernista ornamental vocabulary of the building's own facade — the oldest and the newest elements here in quiet conversation.

"This is an excellent hotel, truly 5/5 in a great location. From check in to check out everything was a great experience. The staff were all very welcoming and helpful throughout our stay. We stayed here for 6 nights and would highly recommend it for families traveling with children. They set up a nice pack and play for my toddler to sleep in. We stayed in the suite and were wowed when walking for the first time. The rooms are well designed both in interior design as well as functionality. The bathroom was very spacious with a beautiful soaking tub with jets. The water pressure in the shower was great and easy to use with both shower head and waterfall functions. The walls seemed noise cancelling as my mom said she never heard the baby cry. The room had a nice kitchen space we used often to cook simple things. Otherwise the restaurant downstairs was quite good for drinks and tapas. I wish I had made a reservation at their Michelin star restaurant in advance as they were booked out during my stay. Breakfast every day was included and delicious, they had eggs made to order and the tortilla Espanola was delicious. Coffee is made fresh to order and there was a wide selection of fruit, bread, meat and cheeses as part of the buffet. Housekeeping services were great, the rooms were spotless every day and it was so nice to come back to a comfortable bed and clean room after our day of sight seeing. I saw multiple families with children and can see why. They have an elevator which makes it quite accessible for a stroller. The hotel has a nice 2 foot deep outdoor pool on the roof which we took advantage of one hot day. There is a lounging area and the bar area is very popular at night. My mom was happy with the massage services at the spa. Overall we had a wonderful stay here and made many wonderful memories. I would highly recommend staying here."

"We had a great experience at Monument hotel in Barcelona and highly recommend it to anyone traveling there. Location is perfect, with plenty of dinning options within walking distance. The room was spacious and amenities great. The hotel is clean and there are couple of restaurants on site and also an awesome rooftop bar and pool. The front desk ladies were great and also the concierge (especially Xavi). Porters were very attentive. We found our home in Barcelona!"

"We really appreciated the attention for service. The arrangement made by concierge Denis for a private tour was exactly the type of tour we were looking for for our granddaughter. The hotels is clean and well located. The room with the extra bed was in line with our needs and expectations. In case there is an occasion we will recommend the hotel to friends."

"I think you would find it hard to better the three night, two day experience we had at this hotel. Not cheap, but you want cheap don’t stay here. But you get what you pay for and this was outstanding. Stylish, without being minimalistic, comfortable - nice touches, pillow selection, honour bar, as much water as you want, fresh linen and towels - everything you expect from a 5 star rated hotel. F&B - great bar with restaurant with mixed tapas and mains. 3 Michelin star in there as well if that is your thing, not ours. Best bit, staff - outstanding - Xavi runs concierge like Messi ran the front line for Barca - Stephen in the bar , ex linebacker for his high school in the US, neither could do enough for us. And these are just the two we spoke most too. Well done the team there - I’d compare the service levels and culture to a Gleneagles in Scotland - outstanding. Ps - best location too. Xavi - I’m holding you to that promise we talked about."
