PB hotel design editorial

Sitting on Carrer del Consell de Cent in Barcelona's Dreta de l'Eixample, within Ildefons Cerdà's famous grid of chamfered blocks, the building that houses Ohla Eixample presented its architects at Lagranja Design with a particular challenge: how to give a contemporary structure its own identity inside a neighbourhood where almost every facade carries the weight of Modernista history. Their answer was a cream limestone grid of deep-set vertical fins and floor-to-ceiling glazing — rational, quietly confident, stepping back from the street through a warm-toned timber entrance surround that gives the ground floor an almost residential intimacy. The Xerta restaurant, visible through that entrance, anchors the building's street presence with a programme devoted to the cuisine of the Ebro Delta. Inside, the 94 rooms work through a restrained palette of polished concrete floors, staggered ceramic tile headboard walls in graduated greys, and bent-rattan occasional chairs that pull the warmth back into spaces that might otherwise feel clinical. Ceilings in several rooms carry a rough textured finish that acts as a deliberate counterpoint to the precision below. The Xerta dining room, arranged around a Saarinen-style tulip table at its centre, opens to a planted inner courtyard through full-height glass — herringbone oak parquet underfoot, slat-screen millwork dividing the space with a rhythm borrowed from Japanese interiors. Up on the rooftop, a cantilevered lap pool pushes out over the Eixample roofscape, the geometry of Cerdà's octagonal blocks spreading in every direction below.

About

Ohla Eixample is a hotel featuring contemporary design, fabulous cuisine and a one-of-a-kind outdoor pool in Barcelona with a cosy chill-out space located on the hotel rooftop. Located in the heart of the Eixample district, between the exclusive Avinguda Diagonal and the famous Passeig de Gràcia, this hotel is known for its minimalist concept, modern setting and personalised service. Designed by architect Daniel Isern, the façade of this building is one of its highlights, featuring ceramic-based materials. It is also an ambitious and unique project, due to the robotics technique that used the music of Max Richter to create ceramic pieces that undoubtedly contribute to the extraordinary end product. The result is a boutique hotel with 94 rooms, all modern and bright, equipped with all sorts of creature comforts: 40-inch and 55-inch television, satellite channels, free high-speed Wi-Fi, dimmable lights, designer amenities, rain shower and 24 hour room service, among others. Ohla Eixample uses 21st century technology with different finishes and enamelling whose shape hides a line of lights that illuminate the façade at night with a finish reminiscent of paper. A magnificent combination of splendour and harmony that makes Ohla Eixample a meeting point for an unforgettable stay. The menu at Xerta Restaurant (1 Michelin start from November 16) is perfect for anyone looking to discover the culinary secrets of the Ebro region. Chef Fran López is in charge of the kitchen, representing the best version of this cuisine with products from the sea and the land perfectly selected to bring the truest flavours of the Delta to the city of Barcelona

"From the moment we stepped out of the taxi we were welcomed by hotel staff. The welcome was warm, friendly and genuine. Nothing was too much trouble during our short stay and staff went out of their way to make sure everything was too our liking. Our deluxe rooms were spacious and well equipped. The bed was the most comfortable hotel bed I've ever slept in. Great quality linen, fixtures and fittings, and attention to detail. A bottle of wine and chocolates in the rooms upon arrival, and a chocolate on the bed each evening. Also plenty of complimentary water in the fridge, robe and slippers, a selection of teas and coffee pods. The breakfast was sumptuous and plentiful with all diets and tastes catered for although happily with a strong Catalan influence, so lots of new foods to try. There is a hot and cold buffet, continental selection, some gluten free bread and cakes and a fabulous selection of fresh fruits, juices and hot drinks. There was also the option of cook to order items such as crepes or eggs your preferred way. The location is beautiful, clean and well kept, with plent of Catalan character. Despite being within a short walk (10-25mins) from all the major sights, the hotel itself is quiet and peaceful. The hotel, Eixample and Barcelona exceeded all my expectations. The hotel and all it's staff made the holiday something very special."

"Beautiful part of Barcelona safe. The staff is amazing and helpful (especially Juanma). We had some nice restaurant recommendations from most of the staff. The staff is the highlight here. The hotel itself is more a four star not a 5 star as we believed. The hotel is dark (hotel hallways - color and lighting choices etc) and more modern so if you are older the lighting in the rooms is very low light. It is located about 10-15 minute walk from Gaudis Casa Mila and Batllo, easy taxi rides to Park Guell and Sagrada. My chief complaint was the cleanliness of the bathroom there was a lot of black mold in the grout which drives me nuts as it makes everything seem dirty and had not been cleaned well in a while. Beds are comfortable but make sure you get a room that doesn't face a busy street. You can ask for feather pillows which I recommend. They do have a nice turn down with lavender scent. They do have breakfast included. Usual meats and some fruit and bread. You can order off the menu - I always expect smoked salmon in Europe and this was not available but I did ask for it everyday. We did not eat in the restaurant for dinner."

"Our stay at Ohla Eixample in Barcelona was nothing short of exceptional. From the moment we arrived, the hotel exceeded every expectation. The property itself is beautiful, elegant, modern, and incredibly comfortable. Our room was stunning and thoughtfully designed, making it the perfect place to relax after long days exploring the city. Despite being located in such a vibrant area, the room was wonderfully quiet and peaceful, and we never experienced any issues with noise. The location is also absolutely ideal. The hotel is situated in a wonderful area within easy walking distance to many beautiful high-end shops, charming boutique stores, and incredible five-star restaurants, making it the perfect base for exploring Barcelona. What truly sets this hotel apart, however, is the staff. Every single person we encountered was warm, knowledgeable, and genuinely dedicated to making our stay special. They went above and beyond in every possible way to ensure our family felt welcomed and cared for. They didn’t just treat us like guests … they made us feel like family. Maria, the hotel manager, as well as Jhuvigl, Mamadou, and Tim are just a few who are truly an outstanding part of the Ohla team. The rooftop pool is absolutely gorgeous and was just one highlight of our stay. Even during the cooler weather, the water was wonderfully warm, like a bathtub, which made it such a relaxing place to unwind while enjoying the beautiful views of Barcelona. Breakfast each morning was outstanding. The buffet included everything you could possibly want: hot dishes, pastries, quiches, cheeses, fresh fruit, made-to-order omelets, juices, and excellent coffee. Everything was beautifully presented and constantly refreshed so it always looked perfect … never picked over or depleted. The staff were incredibly attentive with every detail of our stay. They arranged taxis for us whenever needed, and on one occasion when we were running late, they even stepped outside to flag down another taxi to make sure we arrived at our destination on time. Housekeeping also deserves special recognition. Each day we returned to a perfectly cleaned and beautifully refreshed room. The attention to detail and care they put into making everything spotless and comfortable truly added to the overall experience. The thoughtful touches throughout the hotel made the experience even more special. The lobby always offered water, flavored water, and Cava for guests to enjoy. One evening, after the staff noticed my mom walking through the lobby with flowers we had bought for her birthday, we returned to our room to find balloons and a personal note and a bottle of wine they had arranged for her. It was such a heartfelt and unexpected gesture that meant so much to our family. This level of hospitality is rare. Ohla Eixample truly goes above and beyond in every way, and we left feeling incredibly grateful for such a memorable experience. The value of what we paid for the experience we received truly felt priceless. If you are visiting Barcelona and looking for a hotel that combines luxury, warmth, impeccable service, and a perfect location, this is the place to stay. We cannot wait to return."
