PB hotel design editorial

Sitting on Carrer del Consell de Cent in Barcelona's Dreta de l'Eixample, within Ildefons Cerdà's famous grid of chamfered blocks, the building that houses Ohla Eixample presented its architects at Lagranja Design with a particular challenge: how to give a contemporary structure its own identity inside a neighbourhood where almost every facade carries the weight of Modernista history. Their answer was a cream limestone grid of deep-set vertical fins and floor-to-ceiling glazing — rational, quietly confident, stepping back from the street through a warm-toned timber entrance surround that gives the ground floor an almost residential intimacy. The Xerta restaurant, visible through that entrance, anchors the building's street presence with a programme devoted to the cuisine of the Ebro Delta. Inside, the 94 rooms work through a restrained palette of polished concrete floors, staggered ceramic tile headboard walls in graduated greys, and bent-rattan occasional chairs that pull the warmth back into spaces that might otherwise feel clinical. Ceilings in several rooms carry a rough textured finish that acts as a deliberate counterpoint to the precision below. The Xerta dining room, arranged around a Saarinen-style tulip table at its centre, opens to a planted inner courtyard through full-height glass — herringbone oak parquet underfoot, slat-screen millwork dividing the space with a rhythm borrowed from Japanese interiors. Up on the rooftop, a cantilevered lap pool pushes out over the Eixample roofscape, the geometry of Cerdà's octagonal blocks spreading in every direction below.

About

Ohla Eixample is a hotel featuring contemporary design, fabulous cuisine and a one-of-a-kind outdoor pool in Barcelona with a cosy chill-out space located on the hotel rooftop. Located in the heart of the Eixample district, between the exclusive Avinguda Diagonal and the famous Passeig de Gràcia, this hotel is known for its minimalist concept, modern setting and personalised service. Designed by architect Daniel Isern, the façade of this building is one of its highlights, featuring ceramic-based materials. It is also an ambitious and unique project, due to the robotics technique that used the music of Max Richter to create ceramic pieces that undoubtedly contribute to the extraordinary end product. The result is a boutique hotel with 94 rooms, all modern and bright, equipped with all sorts of creature comforts: 40-inch and 55-inch television, satellite channels, free high-speed Wi-Fi, dimmable lights, designer amenities, rain shower and 24 hour room service, among others. Ohla Eixample uses 21st century technology with different finishes and enamelling whose shape hides a line of lights that illuminate the façade at night with a finish reminiscent of paper. A magnificent combination of splendour and harmony that makes Ohla Eixample a meeting point for an unforgettable stay. The menu at Xerta Restaurant (1 Michelin start from November 16) is perfect for anyone looking to discover the culinary secrets of the Ebro region. Chef Fran López is in charge of the kitchen, representing the best version of this cuisine with products from the sea and the land perfectly selected to bring the truest flavours of the Delta to the city of Barcelona

"Very nice location with very friendly and attentive staff and delicious breakfast buffet. However we had several concerns that resulted in a lower rating. (1) out room had a very distinct odor as soon as we opened the door. It smelled very musty, almost sewer or moldy odor. I had to request a room change and was told that it was the last room available. I didn’t know if the new room would also smell and wondered how they could accommodate us. (2) the mattress was very hard and uncomfortable. We had two twin beds put together to make it king size. The pillows were very soft and also uncomfortable. (3) there was blood stain on the comforter.. They stain appeared fresh. (4) the TV stations offered only Spanish channels. Only English stations were the news. No Fox channel. I didn’t bring up these issues since I was told there was no other room available."

"The hotel is located in a nice part of the city, however the overall experience was far below what should be expected from a 5-star hotel. The interior is nothing special, neither the lobby nor the rooms feel luxurious. The rooms clearly need renovation and repainting. The entire room concept is very open-space: the shower cabin, bathtub, and sinks are all exposed within one open room layout, which may not suit many guests. The room doors are also extremely heavy and difficult to open. The separate toilet area inside the room is inconvenient as well the door has no handle and must be fully closed in order to properly enter or use the toilet, which makes it impractical and uncomfortable. Another major issue was the lighting system in the room. Once the main lights were turned off, it was impossible to switch on lights in only one specific area, such as the bathroom or the bedside lights. There were no separate switches for individual sections of the room, meaning that once the room lights were off, you were left without any lighting at all unless everything was turned back on again. This was extremely inconvenient, especially during the night. The only consistently positive aspect of this hotel was the housekeeping and cleanliness, which were excellent throughout our stay. I would absolutely not recommend this hotel for families with babies or toddlers under 2 years old. The rooms have too many dangerous elements for small children, including multiple sharp pillars and a step leading to the terrace exit. One of the most uncomfortable experiences happened during breakfast. We were traveling with a 1.5-year-old baby, and despite there being two empty tables available side by side, tables where we had already been seated during the previous two days, we were not allowed to sit inside the breakfast area. Instead, a staff member told us to sit in the lobby area. The treatment felt completely discriminatory and made us question whether the breakfast restaurant was intended only for adults. If this is not a family-friendly hotel, then this should be clearly stated. Unfortunately, after this incident, we constantly felt unwelcome at the hotel. The staff then tried to act overly polite afterward, seemingly because they realized how inappropriate the situation had been, but the damage was already done. For a hotel claiming to be 5-star, this level of hospitality is unacceptable. Honestly, based on our experience, it does not deserve that rating. We reported the situation to reception and asked for feedback from the manager. They took our room number and told us they would get back to us, but we never received any response or even a simple apology. Another issue was the service in the lobby area where food and drinks are served. Staff often ignored us or made us wait to place an order while local guests were served immediately. As foreign guests, this treatment felt very noticeable and uncomfortable. The breakfast itself was also disappointing for the price and hotel category. It was not rich or varied mostly mini sandwiches, cold cuts, and small egg portions, while even an omelet had to be specially ordered. The breakfast area is very small and cramped, with only around 16 tables. Overall, this hotel is absolutely not worth the price charged per night. I truly regret choosing this property and trusting the level of service expected from a supposed 5-star hotel. I would not recommend this hotel and would strongly suggest finding another hotel in the same area with much better service and hospitality."
