PB hotel design editorial

Ian Schrager's instinct for locating hotels at the precise point where a neighbourhood tips from interesting to arrived guided the Barcelona EDITION to its site on Carrer de la Boqueria, on the seam between El Raval and the Gothic Quarter. The building, designed by Barcelona firm DOM Arquitectes and completed in 2018, rises nine floors above the medieval street grid in a dark zinc and glass facade — the projecting box windows visible in the images catching oblique city light in a way that makes the massing feel more residential than institutional. Its 100 rooms were conceived with John Heah, the interior designer who has worked across the EDITION portfolio, and they carry the line's characteristic register: herringbone oak floors, deeply upholstered leather headboards with embossed detailing, built-in window seats forming a room within a room, and small-scaled antique oil paintings placed with the unhurried confidence of a private apartment. The palette runs to warm sand and tobacco brown, cove-lit ceilings keeping the atmosphere close and amber rather than declaratively minimal. The restaurant below follows the same instincts — curved terracotta banquettes, vertical walnut slat screens, bar stools in blackened steel, and a gallery wall of black-and-white Catalan photography that grounds the room in specific place rather than generic mood. Above it all, the rooftop terrace trails magenta bougainvillea along its parapet, the twin towers of the Mapfre and Arts hotels visible at the waterfront on the horizon, Barcelona's density spreading away in every direction beneath white linen curtains that open to the evening.

"Since I first stayed in 2025, I’ve stayed at Barcelona Edition a couple more times. Unfortunately, it has become apparent that this hotel is doing its best to cut costs as much as possible this year. I always have issues with the air-conditioning system in the room that I always had to have the hotel management to intervene with the system manually (air conditioning unable to cool down below 25.0°C despite putting fan volume to maximum and temperature to the minimum 17.0°C). Adding insult to injury, they always give me rooms that are technically “upgrades” but with faulty air-conditioning. It’s like giving a gift but with broken items. I’d rather they not upgrade me but give me fully functioning rooms. At the end, they kept me waiting for almost 90 minutes before eventually saying there was indeed a problem with the air-conditioning in my room, but there's nothing they can do to move me to another room because the hotel is fully occupied. After discussion, we agree for EDITION to fully cancel and refund my stay without any penalty. I ended up moving to The Cotton House. If you're going to Barcelona and looking for a fancy hotel, don't stay here. Save your money and go to The Cotton House instead, where the room is waiting for you with fresh and cool air-conditioning, which is heavenly during summer heatwave."

"Amazing rooftop bar with stunning views, a great atmosphere, and delicious drinks. The highlight of our visit was Valentina, she was incredibly friendly, attentive, and made us feel so welcome from start to finish. Her service really elevated the whole experience. If you’re looking for a place to enjoy great drinks and excellent hospitality, this is it. We’ll definitely be back!"

"We stayed at the Edition Hotel Barcelona and I have to write this review specifically about Lucia at the front desk. We arrived late in the evening after a long flight and a rough, draining experience getting through customs. By the time we walked in, my family and I were exhausted. Lucia was the first person we saw, and she greeted us with a genuine smile that honestly turned our whole night around. She was warm, patient, and so kind to my kids after a long day of travel. She took the time to give us great recommendations for the city too. I travel a lot and meet a lot of people along the way, and there was something truly special about her. Her kindness did not feel like a performance, it felt real. If you stay at this hotel, I hope you get to meet Lucia. She made our stay memorable for all the right reasons, and this hotel is lucky to have her."

"I had a situation that was distressing. But management stepped in post-trip and we came to a resolution. I appreciate the help and prompt assistance from Dalma Frei. If I ever return to Barcelona in the future, I will stay here."
