PB hotel design editorial

Tucked into a narrow street in Barcelona's Gothic Quarter, where medieval stonework sits a few steps from the buzzing corridor of Las Ramblas, a nineteenth-century Eixample-era building was converted into the fourteen-room Wittmore Hotel with a design sensibility that owes more to a well-travelled private house than to conventional boutique hospitality. The interiors layer dark-painted panelling and oversized steel-framed glazing against an exuberant living wall that cascades down the inner courtyard, its herringbone brick floor set with black iron bistro chairs and verde marble-topped tables — a combination that pulls the greenery of a garden into what would otherwise be a tight urban slot. Inside, the bar and lounge establishes its mood through a Sputnik chandelier suspended over velvet seating in deep crimson and warm taupe, flanked by floor-to-ceiling shelving in near-black lacquer and a gold-panelled rear wall with applied mouldings that gives the room a compressed, jewel-box quality. Guest rooms carry the same palette forward through tartan wool carpets in ochre and red, mid-century oak bedside tables, pendant lights with amber glass shades, and Suzani-style embroidered cushions that introduce warmth against the dark cornicing. The rooftop pool terrace breaks the register entirely — orange-and-white striped banquette seating, terracotta mosaic tiles, and views across the Eixample roofline toward Montjuïc providing an unguarded, summery counterpoint to the clubbish atmosphere below.

"Where to begin? We only had one night in Barcelona, but the Wittmore Hotel certainly made us want to return. It's located in the lovely and charming Gothic Quarter, tucked away around a corner. The decor is beautiful, but it pales in comparison to the staff. We met Adiane at the front desk. She was so charming and helpful. She found us a last minute tour of Sagrada Familia with a company called The Touring Pandas that was wonderful; she also arranged a cab to take us to SF, as well as a cab for the airport the next morning. All of this with a smile and kindness. Other people we interacted with at the desk were also very friendly and helpful. Our room and bathroom were beautiful, immaculate, and French doors in the bedroom opened onto an incredible vertical garden wall. The shower was enormous and really comfortable robes were provided, as were huge towels. The mini bar was really impressive, complete with everything you need to make cocktails including a lemon, lime, and olives. The room was so quiet, despite other rooms being nearby. We heard nothing. The bed was quite comfortable. The server at breakfast could not have been more helpful. I wish we'd had the time to enjoy a full breakfast at the hotel, but fruit and breads were all we had time for, sadly. I highly recommend the Wittmore Hotel."

"Wonderful experience in this hotel. Very kind and attentive. Enjoyed lunch and dinner during my one night stay. They do have an elevator."

"Beautiful luxury boutique hotel perfectly located in the Gothic Quarter. What made this hotel stand out, in our opinion, is the overall guest experience with impeccable attention to detail and the lovely people who are so attentive and gracious. We hope to return soon!"

"The hotel itself is exceptional. With only 20 rooms, it offers a truly intimate and romantic atmosphere. The service is what makes the experience stand out: the staff remember your name, your preferences, and consistently make a genuine effort to please you. The attention to detail feels personal and sincere, not mechanical. For the level of service alone, I would gladly stay here again. That said, it is important to note that the entire historic center of Barcelona feels quite dirty and poorly lit. Taxis cannot access the hotel’s street directly, but it is very easy to catch one just 100–200 meters away, so this is manageable. Areas such as Passeig de Gràcia may offer a cleaner and more polished environment. Overall, despite the surroundings, the hotel delivers an outstanding and memorable stay."
