PB hotel design editorial

Tucked into a narrow street in Barcelona's Gothic Quarter, where medieval stonework sits a few steps from the buzzing corridor of Las Ramblas, a nineteenth-century Eixample-era building was converted into the fourteen-room Wittmore Hotel with a design sensibility that owes more to a well-travelled private house than to conventional boutique hospitality. The interiors layer dark-painted panelling and oversized steel-framed glazing against an exuberant living wall that cascades down the inner courtyard, its herringbone brick floor set with black iron bistro chairs and verde marble-topped tables — a combination that pulls the greenery of a garden into what would otherwise be a tight urban slot. Inside, the bar and lounge establishes its mood through a Sputnik chandelier suspended over velvet seating in deep crimson and warm taupe, flanked by floor-to-ceiling shelving in near-black lacquer and a gold-panelled rear wall with applied mouldings that gives the room a compressed, jewel-box quality. Guest rooms carry the same palette forward through tartan wool carpets in ochre and red, mid-century oak bedside tables, pendant lights with amber glass shades, and Suzani-style embroidered cushions that introduce warmth against the dark cornicing. The rooftop pool terrace breaks the register entirely — orange-and-white striped banquette seating, terracotta mosaic tiles, and views across the Eixample roofline toward Montjuïc providing an unguarded, summery counterpoint to the clubbish atmosphere below.

"What a lovely hotel, has a dark moody vibe which works in this intimate Gothic quarter hotel. We had a medium room which was perfect for two. Plenty of lovely freebies in the room lovely bed and shower. Best breakfast for a long time in a hotel, even better being looked after by the lovely Fernando who was a super star. Highly recommend."

"Every aspect of our stay was 100% fantastic. The staff were lovely and super accommodating - arranging taxis, restaurant reservations, etc. The rooftop terrace was a highlight of our trip, the hot chocolate and breakfast were delicious, and the moody vibes were fantastic. We loved every minute of our stay!"

"We loved this hotel! Beautifully appointed rooms with lots of amenities and complimentary snack and beverage offerings. The bar and restaurant service was great and we loved the restaurant offerings. Housekeeping was excellent and very responsive. We appreciated the 5 star transportation that was arranged for us (pick up from the cruise port and transportation to the airport). The front desk was the friendliest and most helpful of any we have experienced in quite some time. The pre visit questionnaire was extremely helpful…what a great idea. Thanks to all for a memorable experience!"

"The Wittmore has wonderful staff who will accomodate your every need. Their breakfast is amazing (try the French toast!) . A free mini bar including all the makings of a refreshing G&T make up for the small room size. Location is excellent and walkable to nearly everything."

"Lovely hotel with friendly front desk staff and attractive aesthetics. The hotel's entrance is down a short dead-end alleyway, which opens up into a small dark lobby that sets the tone for the rest of the hotel - dark painted wood, low lighting and lush curtains. This continues in the rooms, where the general sense is of being in a luxurious but dark cave, with windows that open up onto a light well courtyard. The limited lighting gives the rooms a comfortable feel, particularly for sleeping, but this is not a positive in the bathrooms, where the hotel should up the wattage quite a bit (and also install ventilation for the showers). We stayed in two rooms - medium size room 204 for three nights and then large room 206 for four nights, both of which had essentially identical furniture, look and bathroom and thus the difference was really just a bit more size in the "large" room. As noted, the rooms were very dark (even with the window shutters open), though presumably rooms on the higher floors would have more natural light filter down the light well. This is a boutique hotel in the eastern edges of the Gothic Quarter and so, depending upon where you wish to spend your time, it might be a great location or you might prefer to be further west and more centrally located amidst the various tourist sites to visit in Barcelona. While not a bad area by any means, this area is not upscale to say the least, with notably nicer neighborhoods being Born, further west in the Gothic Quarter and on/near Passeig de Gracia. We did not eat at the hotel but the eating and public rooms in the hotel were very attractive, with the feel of a high-end home. All together a very calming and pleasant hotel that would be an excellent choice unless you wished to be closer to the middle of the main tourist sites."
