PB hotel design editorial

Scattered across a hillside in the Solsonès comarca of inland Catalonia, a cluster of medieval stone agricultural buildings — a masia and its outbuildings, their rough-coursed granite walls and arched ground-floor openings intact — were converted into La Vella Farga, a rural hotel that refuses to soften the austerity of its source material. The restoration preserved the original masonry with conspicuous fidelity: dry-stone terrace walls descend the slope in the same language as the buildings above, ancient olive trees anchor the grounds, and the arched openings at ground level now frame glazed screens rather than wooden barn doors, letting the interior glow read against the stone at dusk without altering the structural grammar. Inside, the approach shifts register — not toward minimalism, but toward a kind of cultivated Catalan romanticism. Exposed timber roof trusses and wide-plank oak floors provide the structural backdrop against which the furnishings make their argument: wrought-iron four-poster beds, gilded Baroque mirror cartouches mounted in pairs, crystal chandeliers, and velvet settees in deep aubergine. The restaurant carries the same vocabulary into a more disciplined space, grey-painted walls and bleached timber beams setting off Louis XVI-style medallion chairs and a long communal table beneath cage pendant lights. Beyond the buildings, an infinity pool cantilevered over forested hills delivers the property's sharpest contrast — polished concrete coping and still water against an unbroken canopy of Pyrenean oak.

About

La Vella Farga is a renovated country house that dates back to 1036. The work, carried out with great care by the owners, Gemma and Martí, has struck a harmonious balance between the original stone architecture and wooden floors of the house, and elements of contemporary design. Set deep in the lush countryside, Hotel la Vella Farga is a meticulously reconstructed eleventh-century Catalan country house that has been given a new lease of life in its latest incarnation as a unique, exclusive guest house. Designed with all the essential elements of modern comfort, la Vella Farga is located just an hour and a half from Barcelona. Ideally situated in the midst of a spectacular natural setting of more than 300 hectares of meadows, pine forests and century-old olive groves in the foothills of the Catalan Pyrenees, the hotel offers guests a peaceful haven, where tranquillity, nature and elegance converge to create an idyllic experience of relaxation and wellbeing.

La Vella Farga Reviews

"What’s advertised and what you actually get are two very different things. Basic issues were handled poorly, promises were made and then reversed, and the way we were treated as paying guests was shocking. When problems arose, responsibility was avoided rather than taken. This place may look beautiful, but the management and service behind it are deeply disappointing. We left feeling stressed, dismissed, and misled. Would never return and would strongly advise others to think twice."

"We stayed here on 6–7 December 2025 and had the worst hotel experience we have ever encountered. My partner requested pescatarian food and we were told only meat dishes were available — no accommodation or alternatives offered. Our room smelled strongly of stagnant water, and when we reported it, the only solution provided was to open the window and they gave us a candle. The bathroom leaked so badly it flooded the room and soaked our belongings. Instead of fixing the issue or moving us to a comparable room, we were sent to a much lower tier apartment hotel but were still charged for the original room. They promised an upgrade and compensation, but later revoked it and asked us to leave the property entirely. This hotel failed at basic hospitality, service recovery, and cleanliness. For the price they charge, this was unacceptable. We strongly advise avoiding this property."
