PB hotel design editorial

A twelfth-century Premonstratensian abbey rising from the middle of a Ribera del Duero vineyard estate is not the most obvious candidate for a luxury hotel, yet Abadia Retuerta LeDomaine makes the conversion feel almost inevitable. The abbey church — its Gothic ribbed vaults, exposed brick arcading, and a faded fresco still presiding over the apse — was retained in near-original condition and repurposed as the main restaurant, one of the more dramatic dining rooms in the whole of Spain. The surrounding monastic buildings were rebuilt and extended to accommodate 22 rooms and suites, with the intervention calibrated to preserve the cloister sequence and the contemplative scale of the original complex. The guest rooms carry the amber warmth of the Castilian meseta inside: limewashed plaster walls in ochre and sand, wide-plank oak flooring, and dark-stained timber ceiling beams that mirror the proportions of the abbey structure above them. Furniture is restrained — upholstered headboards in pale velvet, dark wood case pieces with brass hardware — and the windows, framed in natural oak, open directly onto vine rows or the gardens beyond. The outdoor pool, set behind clipped hedging and edged in granite, is positioned so that the abbey's stone walls form its backdrop, grounding the contemporary leisure amenity firmly in the historic fabric. The estate's 700 hectares of vines do the rest of the work, pulling the whole composition into the austere, golden landscape of the Duero valley.

"We have stayed at Hotel Abadia Retuerta LeDomaine three times and plan to return each year as long as we can. We cannot say enough nice things about the quality of the hotel, services, food and location. The setting of the hotel in vineyards of Abadia Retuerta in an old abbey is breathtaking. The rooms are beautifully designed and the service is impeccable. The staff went out of their way to afford us a unique and special experience. The pool and spa area provides great facilities and a very relaxing atmosphere. There are multiple options for dining with an outstanding a la carte breakfast as part of the room fee. One of the most amazing properties that we have ever stayed at."

"Abadia Retuerta LeDomaine is a magical luxury boutique hotel with a total of 30 rooms set in an abbey dating back to the 12th century. It is steeped in history of the surrounding abbeys, the monarchies as they coalesced into a single monarchy, and that is such an important part of the experience. Rooms are visually simple, evoking the rooms the monks would have lived in but with all the amenities one expects in a luxury hotel: double sinks, a soaking tub that is huge, a wonderful rain shower. They don't use single use bath products which are wasteful; they use large, refillable products from a Spanish brand, Natura Bliss. Their spa is lovely with a gentle waterfall into the pool. They have two hammams, two saunas, two hot tubs, two cold rooms. on either side of the pool. The relaxation rooms are serene. The therapists are excellent (I had 3 massages focused on an ongoing problem with my back). Food is amazing. The Refectory, originally the dining room for the monks when it was an abbey, is a Michelin-starred restaurant. Another of the restaurants serves local cuisine typical to the region. The original vineyards had been destroyed and when the abandoned abbey was purchased about 2012, both the abbey and the vineyards were lovingly restored, and the winery is now producing award winning vintages. They have a wonderful garden where they grow the produce the hotel uses and meals become seasonal. All of these are facts. The real heart of the place is the staff who are kind, anticipate needs before you know you need them. If the scale is 1 to 10, with 10 being the highest, they go to 11. The last thing I want to say is that the hotel has a real sense of place. You know where you are, and why. You would never think you are anywhere else. It is tucked next to the Duero River, not too far from the headwaters so the river is gentle and small here. For me, this was a wonderful find."

"Gorgeous property, impeccably restored 12th century abbey 2 hours from Madrid. We were there as a family with 20 year old twins, but is mostly couples. Highlights: The bar is stunning and you can eat there as well, for a more casual meal. We had a tour of the property and a wine tasting with Miguel Angel, who was a fabulous enthusiastic ambassador, worth doing! The hotel can arrange taxi service to Valladolid, which we did as we did not rent a car. Lovely place to walk around for a couple of hours in the old city, and lunch at Villa Paramesa, which the hotel reserved and was delicious. Also recommend lunch at Asador Carlos for the lechazo and salad and setas if in season. We were the only tourists. A special shout out to Jhoan, who was amazing at putting things together for us, super helpful, and infinitely patient when I changed my mind. I would love to go in October or April/May when a bit warmer so we could bike and hike as there are many places within an hour to hike."
