PB hotel design editorial

Framed by the century-old palm canopy of Las Palmas' Parque Doramas, a cream-rendered colonial building has anchored Gran Canaria's social and political life since 1890 — a history that Santa Catalina A Royal Hideaway Hotel carries with genuine weight. The original structure, designed in the Canarian vernacular with its characteristic timber balconies and louvered shutters, received a substantial contemporary addition in recent years, the two parts held together by the park's own lush geometry. The bar retains its period character most completely: warm mahogany panelling, cherry-wood floors, cast-iron bar stools, and a monumental figurative canvas dominating one wall give the room the atmosphere of a gentlemen's club that somehow survived intact. The 211 rooms move between the historic building and the newer wing, where the design shifts register. Interiors draw on a palette of veined white marble flooring, dark-stained wood joinery, and gold-framed mirrors — colonial grandeur updated with velvet occasional chairs and amber glass wall sconces rather than replaced by it. Ceiling fans in dark bronze provide both function and a period note that ties the newer accommodation back to the original building. The rooftop addition is the sharpest contemporary intervention: a black-tiled infinity pool set within a deck of striped stone and flanked by timber-framed pergolas, angled toward the Atlantic horizon — a gesture that acknowledges the hotel's present ambitions without pretending to be anything the 1890 building could have imagined.

"Fabulous stay at a very high quality hotel in excellent surroundings well situated between the new town and the old town of Vegueta. The city of Las Palmas is an ideal destination for."

"Beautiful historic building . Great staff in breakfast room especially Diana who is attentive polite and engaging every morning. Ali rooftop bar staff attentive during day and evening too and great service. Tweaks needed - reception check in -room wasn’t ready on book in at 1pm which is fair enough but by official 3 pm check in it was still not ready and eventually took until 3.30pm . Prosecco eventually offered at check in but one glass was given with just a mouthful in the glass and the other was half full? When we complained at 3.30pm that we were still waiting the reception supervisor was apologetic and understanding and the hotel was very busy so I give her credit for resolving and accept that they were fully booked so cleaning staff were very busy. Main bar near reception was very poor, we walked in and sat down on the first evening. Tables were dirty and crisps were on the floor. After 10 minutes of seeing staff talking at the bar and not even acknowledging us or another seated couple , we left and went to the roof top bar. Not very good or inviting so we never returned throughout our five day stay. Rooms need a bit of maintenance even the deluxe suite. Electric sockets loose off the wall so difficult using uk adapters and pulling them out carefully. No where to hang your towel or clothes in the large showers but hanging hooks in the smaller toilet area? Don’t understand this oversight as you have to walk out of showers with no towel or clothes where hooks like the toilets would be fine and well away from the powerful shower for clothes and towel to stay dry ."

"This is a lovely hotel set in spacious grounds. The staff were very friendly. The family room was spacious, with a separate sitting and outdoor areas. So why not five stars? Importantly, there was no in-room hard copy hotel guide. You had to use the internet via the terminal built into the mirror. It was an extremely clunky, user unfriendly process and was out of action for a period on our second day (confirmed by one of the hotel electricians). So you had to fall back on asking the two-person reception who were usually very busy, meaning a long wait for information you should have obtained easily from a hard copy hotel guide! Next, it was very difficult to get a dining reservation that wasn't early (6pm) or late (9pm). Fortunately TripAdvisor told us about the nearby Aramara (see my separate review). Unlike most upmarket hotels, there was no full time concierge to offer the usual concierge services and no cafe (just a small bar area with limited menu). Together these deficiencies limited our enjoyment of our stay."

"Las Palmas destination hotel. If you just need to chill in absolute luxury - this is the place - you have to search out the best parts of las Palmas but if you stay here for a week or so - its heaven."
