PB hotel design editorial

Low-rise whitewashed pavilions arranged around a sequence of freeform pools, their terracotta-tiled rooflines barely clearing the crowns of mature Canarian palms — this is the grammar of the Seaside Grand Hotel Residencia, a 94-room property set within the protected dune landscape of Maspalomas that has quietly maintained the most convincing case for traditional resort architecture in the Canary Islands since opening in 2000. Conceived by the Lopesan group and designed with close reference to the colonial vernacular of the islands — thick rendered walls, dark timber balustrades, bougainvillea cascading from ironwork balconies — the property operates at a domestic scale that larger Maspalomas resorts have never managed to achieve. The interiors sustain that register throughout. Guestrooms are finished in powder blue and cream, their four-poster beds in heavily turned dark mahogany sitting on terracotta tile floors softened by cobalt-patterned wool rugs, the palette drawing an explicit line between Canarian craft traditions and the blue-and-white ceramic vocabulary of the Portuguese and Spanish colonial worlds. Blue-and-white ginger jar lamps flank each bed; the curtain fabric repeats a small diamond motif that echoes the bedcover embroidery. In the bar, yellow leather bar stools pull against hand-painted tile dados and a dark mahogany counter beneath a coffered rotunda ceiling — a colonial club atmosphere that feels earned rather than assembled. The gardens, planted with columnar cacti, agapanthus, and specimen palms, do much of the work that architecture alone cannot.

"This is an absolute gem of a hotel. On arrival one is immediately thrown into a haven of luxury and tranquility. The staff are exceptionally helpful , a special call-out out to Eros. The rooms are large with many thoughtful touches. The grounds are beautifully tended and have a Caribbean feel to them. The food is absolutely outstanding in both the pool bar and the main restaurant, which is situated on a a beautifully lit verandah overlooking the pool. I’m just so glad we opted for half board!! To top it all everywhere is SPOTLESSLY clean and inviting. I was so relaxed I actually couldn’t stay awake after about 10pm!!! , That said we did manage a couple of night s in the piano bar where one night we were entertained by the most amazing saxophonist. This is most definitely not a hotel for children, but for anyone middle aged or above you will LOVE it. Needless to say we will be coming back next year only for longer!!"

"We had another great holiday here. The staff were almost universally friendly, helpful and professional. The quality of the food was very good, with an excellent choice for lunch at the poolside bar. A couple of points to note though: - the local municipality is transforming the area on three sides of the hotel into a new park. This is a substantial piece of engineering and we understand is to continue for some months. The building work comes right up to the boundary of the hotel and involves noise. When we were there the workers were busy from around 7.30 am to 3.30 pm on weekdays only. It did not disturb us in our room - but there was some noise at lunchtime at the pool bar and at the pool. Nothing too bad but since we particularly choose this hotel for its calm and peace it was a little annoying. We know the work is outside the control of the hotel, but some information from management as to expected duration of the works and what they are doing to mitigate the issue would be helpful. - a previous reviewer noted that the age limit for the spa/hydrotherapy pool had been reduced. The management's response was that this was temporary for the Christmas holiday season but when we went in early February (not holiday season) the age limit was still reduced to age 8 and above. There is also new signage saying that this is the relaxation pool and asking you to maintain a quiet atmosphere. Think that this is a little unrealistic for 8 or 9 year olds..... and not really a workable option.. However, we love the hotel and still plan to return once the work has been substantially completed."

"Everything about this hotel was superb. From the moment we arrived - the hotel is just beautiful - decoration, style, spotlessly clean, such a chilled gorgeous vibe. Staff were amazing, so friendly and helpful but also efficient. The restaurant on the terrace is gorgeous during the day but at night it’s magical. Food was superb - we took the dinner package at check in (not something we normally do because we like to wander out) and was such a good decision, food and service were top notch. The highlight for me was the after dinner entertainment in the bar - every night different musicians (pianist, saxophonist, guitarist, singer etc) while enjoying an after dinner drink. No problem ever getting a pool bed and the pool attendant brings towels/cushion and pool bar staff attend to drink needs. Dinner package can be swapped for lunch at pool bar - we did that one day and again food was excellent. We have stayed in a lot of hotels around the world and this is definitely one of the very best!"
