PB hotel design editorial

Wedged into the medieval walls of Dalt Vila, Ibiza's UNESCO-listed upper town, a centuries-old canon's residence — its facade of pale limestone ashlar, arched doorways, and wrought-iron balconies unchanged at street level — was converted into La Torre del Canonigo, a small boutique hotel that draws its entire identity from the fortified hilltop it inhabits. The building's position within the ramparts means certain rooms look directly out over the marina and the bay beyond, a view that no amount of contemporary design could manufacture; the architecture simply delivers it through casement windows framed in dark-painted steel. Inside, the interiors work a confident Mediterranean vernacular: hydraulic encaustic cement tiles in geometric patterns of ochre, slate-blue, and terracotta cover floors throughout the guestrooms and restaurant, grounding spaces that combine exposed timber ceiling beams with woven rattan headboards and abstract artwork clearly referencing the graphic language of Miró. The palette is warm without being heavy — limewashed walls, natural linen, parquet herringbone in the tower rooms — and the rooftop terrace, where the same patterned tilework extends underfoot, frames a panorama of Ibiza Town's harbour lights at dusk that is the property's single most persuasive argument. The hotel is small by design, with fewer than twenty rooms distributed across several floors of the historic structure, and the scale keeps the atmosphere closer to a private residence than a conventional hotel.

"My father and I came to Ibiza for five days and I was looking for a hotel that had the Ibiza vibe. This hotel fit the bill: it's really beautiful, nestled in between the castle walls, with a gorgeous view of the city. I'll start with the positives: The staff is incredible. Even before we booked, they were responsive and answered all our questions immediately. Special shoutout to Isabel, Sarah and Javier (I hope I spelled those correctly). The breakfast served some of the best coffee I've ever had, and the complimentary shuttle to the city center and back was clutch so you didn't have to walk up and down the steep walkways. The hotel has thought of very small details that make the stay memorable: Le Labo products, intuitive lights, free beverages in the room, coffee machines, etc. Unfortunately, that's where the positives end. This hotel is not suitable for people with mobility issues due to the copious amount of stairs. We booked the premium room which had a bathroom dividing a bedroom and a living room: perfect for us to have separate sleeping spaces. The room is beautiful, but unfortunately, it's facing the street and right above a bar that kept us up all night. A trash truck woke us again at 1: 30 a.m -- my dad never wakes up in the night, but that night, he woke up five times. The people above us also walked around all night and every time a toilet flushed, we heard it. We immediately requested to change rooms because we couldn't do 5 nights of no sleep -- the only rooms that were available were two basic rooms at the top of five flights of stairs that were impossible for my dad to get to. So, I moved him again to a superior room, which, in our opinion, is maybe the best room in the whole hotel. He had no complaints about this room. The staff was amazing in assisting the various room changes and with any other requests such as toiletries I had forgotten. I stayed in the basic room, which are all located above the restaurant that stayed open until 1:30 a.m. and then burst alive again around 6 a.m. with staff moving tables and chairs and preparing for the day. Also, the walls are thin, so you can hear your neighbors. All to say, if you are sensitive to noise, this is probably not the hotel for you. Lastly, breakfast was included in our rate, but we were charged for two of them, plus they charged us 200 euros extra for the "additional bed" (which was just the sofa bed pulled out in the first room) -- fine, but we had not been told about this extra charge during our numerous inquiries before arriving so we felt a little duped. They of course rectified the bill immediately without hesitation. All in all, it's a beautiful hotel with amazing staff, but I probably wouldn't stay here again, especially for more than 700 euros a night."
