PB hotel design editorial

Bringing a palace-scaled Beaux-Arts banking complex back into civic life was the central challenge facing the Four Seasons Madrid when it opened in 2020, after a decade-long, €800 million conversion of the landmark Canalejas block — five interconnected early twentieth-century buildings originally constructed as the headquarters of the Banco Español de Crédito. The facade visible in the images tells you exactly what that means: rusticated limestone, arched openings framed by carved figural sculpture, ornate ironwork gates, and the kind of institutional gravitas that no amount of contemporary hospitality programming can — or should — fully domesticate. The project, led by architects and designers including Isay Weinfeld for the interiors of certain spaces, delivered 200 rooms and suites across seven floors at the heart of Madrid's historic centre, with the rooftop terrace positioned directly alongside the celebrated ornamental street lamp column at the junction of Alcalá and Gran Vía. Inside, the interiors navigate between two distinct registers. Guest rooms are finished in pale champagne linen, tufted leather headboards in warm tobacco tones, dark-framed windows, and carefully composed stone surfaces — calming and precise without straining toward neutrality. The all-day restaurant, by contrast, leans into a more animated Madrileño spirit: sage-green channel-stitched banquettes, gilded tulip bases beneath bistro tables, Murano glass ceiling fixtures, and patterned wallcovering panels in antique gold. Up on the rooftop, fringed terracotta parasols and sculptural planters frame views directly across to the Metropolis Building, the city's architectural biography unfolding at eye level.

"Firstly I would like to thank everyone at the Four Seasons for our 10/10 dining experience for my sisters birthday! The staff went above and beyond, the venue was sensational the food was incredible and the staff were true gems. Both dining and waiting staff were a true credit to the brand and even brought out a birthday desert for my sister towards the end of the evening! The pictures don’t even do it justice for a beautiful rooftop spot it really was, thank you for making our evening memorable! Kerri x"

"The service from most departments was of the standard I would expect from Four Seasons. Unfortunately, the breakfast service and service at the lobby bar during our five-night stay fell well short of that standard. Our final breakfast was particularly disappointing. We had to ask multiple times for basic items and drinks before receiving them. Waiting approximately 10 minutes for a glass of orange juice, particularly when dining with a toddler, is simply unacceptable at a hotel of this calibre. The food took so long to arrive that eventually we gave up and left without eating breakfast. There was also an unfortunate feeling of being taken advantage of when it came to certain charges. Having stayed at approximately 15–20 Four Seasons properties around the world, I have never encountered a €36 charge for a child’s order of chicken fingers and fries. What arrived was a large plate containing five or six small chicken fingers and fries. €36 for a simple children’s meal is, frankly, disgraceful and completely disproportionate. To make matters worse, the lobby bar applies a €2-per-person “cover charge” even when simply ordering coffees. When guests are already paying approximately €700 per night to stay at the hotel, charging an additional cover fee to sit in the hotel’s own lobby bar feels particularly inappropriate and leaves a very poor impression. The pool was also not heated to any noticeable degree, while the “jacuzzi” was nowhere near the temperature one would normally expect from a jacuzzi. Overall, the hotel has very good rooms and an excellent location, and we encountered many professional and helpful members of staff. However, at this price point and given the standards associated with the Four Seasons brand, the overall service and guest experience fell short of expectations. Having experienced Four Seasons hospitality at many properties around the world, this stay unfortunately did not live up to the level I have come to associate with the brand."

"Four Seasons Madrid exceeded my expectations in every way. From the moment I arrived, the service was warm, attentive, and genuinely personalized. The hotel is stunning, with beautifully designed rooms, outstanding facilities, and an unbeatable location for exploring Madrid. The staff consistently went above and beyond to make my stay memorable, and every detail reflected the high standards you would expect from a Four Seasons property. It has definitely become one of my favorite hotels. The only disappointing part of my trip was that I wanted to extend my stay, but unfortunately the hotel was fully booked and there was no availability. I can’t wait to return on my next visit to Madrid. Highly recommended."

"The location, service, and building are excellent. There is no doubt that it is the best hotel in Madrid. However, I also believe that there are very good options in the area with similar levels of service and more competitive prices. I think the hotel is worth it, but from my perspective, the main consideration is the value for money, as a significant part of the price reflects the prestige and the Four Seasons name. At the same time, that same prestige can also be considered one of the hotel’s greatest advantages, as it guarantees a certain level of quality, service, and experience. Overall, an excellent choice for those looking for a luxury hotel in Madrid with a privileged location and exceptional service."
