PB hotel design editorial

A late nineteenth-century residential building on Calle Fortuny, in Madrid's composed and quietly moneyed Almagro district, gives Hotel One Shot Fortuny 07 its architectural backbone — exposed red brick punctuated by carved stone panels, arched ground-floor openings, and wrought-iron balconies that survive intact across the facade's five storeys. The conversion kept the envelope largely untouched, allowing the building's period character to do the heavy lifting while the interiors pursue a distinctly contemporary direction. Inside, the design runs two parallel registers simultaneously. Guestrooms layer oak herringbone or wide-plank floors with brass-detailed furniture — pivoting television consoles on gilded legs, rounded leather bed bases, concentric plaster medallions used as headboard surrounds, and globe pendant lighting drawn from a mid-century vocabulary — while a blue-lacquered writing desk with a mushroom-cap table lamp introduces a Pop inflection that stops the scheme from settling into safe period comfort. The restaurant takes the opposite approach: Hans Wegner-adjacent wishbone chairs around solid walnut communal tables, warm oak shelving running the full length of the bar wall, and a saguaro cactus planted against floor-to-ceiling arched windows that flood the room in sharp Madrid light. The rear courtyard, planted with bamboo and silver birch around woven-cord outdoor chairs, pulls the whole property into a register that belongs entirely to the neighbourhood rather than to any particular hotel formula.

"A very disappointing experience at One Shot Fortuny. My husband and I stayed at One Shot Fortuny for the fourth time: our first three visits were excellent, which is why we chose this hotel again without hesitation. But after this stay, I am no longer willing to take the risk of coming back to One Shot Fortuny, because this visit completely ruined our impression of the trip. The room was in very poor condition. It was almost impossible to use the shower properly: water was coming out of both the faucet and the overhead shower at the same time, flooding the entire bathroom. This was not just a minor inconvenience, but a real problem that made every shower an unpleasant experience. The bathroom overall left a very unpleasant impression. The sink was so small and the faucet was positioned so poorly that it was impossible to wash your face properly without flooding the entire area around it. The wall where the towels were hanging was dirty, the walls in the room were generally stained, and there was a hole in one of the walls. For a hotel of this level, this is absolutely unacceptable. Housekeeping was another major disappointment. It felt like cleaning consisted only of making the bed. Papers and small pieces of rubbish were not removed, and crumpled pajamas were simply placed on top of the freshly made bed. In a good hotel, you expect cleanliness, care, and basic respect for the guest’s space. Here, it felt as if the room was only “passed through” rather than properly cleaned. In addition, my birthday was during this stay, on May 4, and the hotel knew about it. We did not expect anything grand, but at least some minimal communication or a small gesture from One Shot Fortuny would have been appropriate. Instead, there was no reaction at all, and no feeling that the hotel was interested in improving the experience of returning guests. After three good visits, I genuinely considered One Shot Fortuny a reliable choice. After the fourth one, I no longer do. This experience showed that you can pay for a hotel you used to trust and end up with a room that is unpleasant to stay in, an inconvenient bathroom, poor housekeeping, and no attempt from the hotel to compensate for or fix the situation. For me, this is the main point: the problem was not only the room itself, but the fact that One Shot Fortuny did nothing to make this experience better. So I would think very carefully before booking. I used to recommend this hotel, but after this stay, I can no longer do so. If you are not willing to risk your holiday and your mood, especially if the trip is important to you, I would choose another option."

"I loved the feel and the design of this hotel but when you almost pay $300 for a room it’s disappointing it doesn’t include breakfast. The receptionist was great at my arrival but when I later complained about the TV reception (I couldn’t receive the three TV-channels I wanted to watch) he got quite condescending and said he would sent up a technician but that man never arrived. This is NOT okay in an expensive hotel! The hotel is on a quiet street but the rooms facing the courtyard are too dark for my taste so if I were you, I would ask for a room facing the street."

"Very European charismatic hotel and modern touches. Check in is so friendly and the location is off from the busiest spot but still walkable"

"I stayed at the hotel for 5 nights and overall the experience was great. It’s on a quiet street with lots of embassies and offices nearby; it wasn’t super-buzzy but I always felt safe walking around even at night as a solo female traveler. The location is great, with buses and trains a short walk away. Major attractions are all easily accessible. The lobby is small but features interesting modern art pieces, with a cute courtyard as well. The room is huge, and well-equipped (no iron in the room, but available on request). Check-in was efficient but not particularly warm (likely not helped by my extremely limited Spanish skills). I arrived around 10am, and understandably my room wasn’t available for a few more hours, but even being shown where a bathroom was or recommendations for some nearby coffee spots would have been nice. Having flown from Australia, the chance to catch my breath before heading out again would’ve been welcome. On the other hand, front desk was very helpful in offering me a travel adaptor for the duration of my stay when I foolishly left mine behind. The room was very generous in size, with functioning windows (a real plus these days) and a comfy bed. Everything felt modern and was very clean."
