PB hotel design editorial

At number 67 Calle de Claudio Coello, in the heart of Madrid's Salamanca district, a late nineteenth-century aristocratic mansion was converted into the 44-room Hotel Único Madrid with a precision that kept the building's bones intact while threading contemporary design through every interior. The facade's restrained classicism — stone pilasters, wrought-iron entry gates, cornice details softened by the canopy of mature street trees — gives no hint of the quiet modernity within, which is exactly the point. Inside, the conversion work navigated the tension between preservation and reinvention with considerable skill. Original ornamental plasterwork crowns the fine-dining room, where a mirrored oval ceiling medallion floats above a monochromatic hydraulic tile floor laid in concentric medallion patterns — a collision of periods that feels deliberate rather than discordant. Brass globe pendant lights and charcoal upholstered banquettes push the space firmly into the present. Guest rooms are dressed in rich rosewood-grain wall panelling that frames the headboard wall as a single architectural element, warm timber flooring running throughout, with tufted leather benches on polished steel X-frames placed at the foot of each bed. The glazed winter-garden restaurant, opening directly onto a clipped garden courtyard, supplies the property's most quietly theatrical moment — black steel framing, marble-topped tables, and a wall of dense hedge creating an unexpectedly serene pocket within one of Madrid's most animated neighbourhoods.

"Best location off the 'golden mile' of Serrano in gentile Salamanca district. You do not want to be in noisy Centro, be in Salamanca. The Unico is a beautiful gem of a hotel in a low-build elegant building on a well-known, tree-lined street. Spacious room and bathroom were spotlessly clean, quiet, excellent bedding, lighting ( no fiddly switches) and silent air-conditioning. Daily bottles of water and coffee machine in- room. Generous and delicious buffet breakfast inside or outside on the terrace with views of garden and scent of jasmine. Easy walk to great restaurants in the area. Staff always on hand to help with everything and genuinely warm. A shout-out to Antonio at Guest Setvices. Would recommend the Unico without hesitation, and definitely over grander names like the Ritz and the Westin."

"We will always now stay at Hotel Unico when in Madrid! What a gem. It’s located in Salamanca so much quieter and residential feeling…less touristy…than many of the other hotels in Madrid. But you can walk everywhere. The hotel is a gorgeous boutique hotel with a really beautiful restaurant and terrace. Our room was so elegant and cozy. It is luxurious but comfy. The people that work there were so welcoming and helpful and they really made our stay. Antonio! Antonio curated our Madrid experience sending us to more local parts of this wonderful city. It made it a much more unique experience. We were there for five nights and looked forward to coming downstairs and talking to him about the day. Andrea at the front desk and everyone who worked with her were also so kind and helpful. They set up reservations for us and anything else we needed. And every morning when we went down to our delicious breakfast overlooking the terraces Clementina welcomed us with a smile and also helped us to understand more about Madrid. Thank you all we will definately be back. So if you are going to Madrid really stay here. You will not regret it! Adios."
