PB hotel design editorial

Few hotels in Europe carry as charged a civic identity as the palace at the corner of the Paseo del Prado, where the Mandarin Oriental Ritz Madrid has stood since César Ritz commissioned it in 1910 and King Alfonso XIII laid its foundation stone. Designed by the French architect Charles Mewès — the same hand behind the Paris Ritz and London's Ritz on Piccadilly — the building delivered Madrid its most formally assured Beaux-Arts façade: curved iron-and-glass entrance canopy, keystoned arches, terracotta-toned stone, and carved masonry reliefs that give the exterior a weight the surrounding boulevard can actually sustain. The 2021 reopening, following a four-year, €100 million renovation overseen by interior designer Jaime Beriestain, brought 153 rooms and suites back into service alongside a transformed public floor that navigates the central challenge of any historic palace conversion — how to honour the bones without embalming them. Beriestain's solution leans into chromatic warmth rather than period literalism. Guest rooms pair ivory boiserie trimmed in brass with dark leather headboards and herringbone oak floors, pendant globe lights in amber glass sitting against the original curved ceiling profiles. The bar — named Pictura — sets a rippled gold sculptural back-bar against Louis XVI plasterwork and crystal chandeliers, its velvet stools and old-master portrait gallery giving the room a theatricality that feels earned rather than applied. Below, a Carrara marble pool hall with brass-framed cabana structures and a hanging chandelier carries the same vocabulary underground, where restraint and grandeur hold each other in careful tension.

"This hotel is the epitome of luxury. We stayed here for 3 nights in early April 2026. Very few hotels are this refined, sophisticated and beautiful, but still maintain an environment that is completely welcoming to children. However, the MOR in Madrid is definitely one such place. We were welcomed in as soon as we arrived. The check-in process was very smooth. We were very early, but they managed to get our rooms ready in just about 25 minutes. They offered us some drinks and light snacks in the salon to help pass the time. The lobby is immaculate and stately. Honestly you feel like you're being welcomed into some sort of royal castle! We stayed in a connecting family suite--2 separate bedrooms that were connected by an adjoining living room area. We also had two full bathrooms--both had standup showers and one also had a tub. The rooms were beautifully decorated and well maintained. They always kept our room stocked with fresh bottled water and both bedrooms had Nespresso coffee machines/pods that were complimentary. They also had well-stocked minibars--which, sadly, we didn't end up using. The room was extremely quiet as well. I don't recall hearing any street noise or anyone in the hallways either. The hotel also offers a wonderful location--just a 1 minute walk from a gorgeous fountain as well as the Prado Museum. I also love how the hotel has a driveway off of the main street, which makes it very easy to get into and out of taxis/Ubers. The hotel staff was wonderful--they answered every question we posed, provided great restaurant/attraction recommendations and helped us get taxis when needed. Breakfast was not included with our room, so we only ate breakfast at the hotel once. But it was a luxurious spread of fruit, pastries, cheeses, Iberico ham, hot dishes, smoked salmon, coffee, juice, tea, water and more. They also offered 2 options--a price of 52 euros for the buffet only or 61 euros for the buffet plus one additional a al carte hot item. Despite the price, I felt like the breakfast was still a solid value because the number of items offered was quite immense. I'm of course listing the price for the adults (the cost for our children to eat at the breakfast buffet was lower). We didn't use the spa, but it looked beautiful from the pictures. I just can't personally attest to its quality. I'm very glad that we selected this hotel. It isn't cheap---but you get what you pay for. If you want your family to feel like they are enjoying ultimate luxury in central Madrid--then this is absolutely your place!"

"The hotel is just lovely. I Love the location I had a prado suite which I LOVED! The real standout here is the people. I’m not sure I can remember a hotel with service like this. The concierge PERFECT. Jesus, gracias !! The restaurant staff. Mariana y Miguel. Amazing. You feel like you are living at the hotel after one day. Today I called room service, the gentleman answered with ; “ are you ready for your coffee senor…”. Yes I ordered coffee every day. The garden. Beautiful. Bravo !"
