PB hotel design editorial

Facing the Plaza de Santa Ana in Madrid's Barrio de las Letras — the literary quarter where Cervantes, Lope de Vega, and Quevedo once lived within streets of each other — a Belle Époque building originally constructed in 1923 as the Reina Victoria hotel was gutted and reborn in 2006 as ME Madrid, the Spanish brand's flagship. The exterior, designed in its original incarnation by Luis Aladrén, kept its ornate Eclectic façade largely intact: stone pilasters, arched windows with decorative keystones, classical figurative sculpture along the roofline, and the distinctive corner turret that still anchors this end of the plaza at night, lit now in a cool violet that announces the building's new allegiances without apologising for them. The interiors were handled by Zaha Hadid's studio in collaboration with ME by Meliá's design team, and the approach is a deliberate counter-movement to the building's historicist shell — rooms stripped to warm oak panelling, dark-stained hardwood floors, and a palette of white linen and sand that keeps the focus on views of old Madrid's terracotta rooftops. Upper-floor suites wrap their glazing around entire corners, so the city's skyline functions as a room element rather than a backdrop. The rooftop terrace — planted with bamboo, furnished in walnut decking and grey upholstery — draws a crowd that has little interest in the building's century-old bones, which is precisely the tension the 192-room property navigates most convincingly.

"Hotel Madrid Reina Victoria is perfectly located for exploring Madrid, and we appreciated being checked in early after our long flight from the U.S.—a thoughtful gesture that started things off well. Unfortunately, the rest of the stay didn’t live up to expectations. The surrounding construction was a major disappointment. It stripped away the charm of the area, making it impossible to enjoy even the plaza in front of the hotel. The bed was too soft for my liking—far from the comfort of Hotel Colón Gran Meliá in Sevilla. Toilet paper was surprisingly rough, which added to the discomfort. We appreciated the daily water for the coffee pot and the variety of espresso pods. Our espresso machine had issues upon arrival, but staff replaced it promptly. The nightly rate felt steep, and breakfast was an additional €30 per person per day—far too much for what was offered. Had I known about the construction and these limitations, I likely wouldn’t have booked, despite my loyalty to the Meliá brand. This stay felt overpriced and impersonal, and despite the location, it’s not a place I’ll be returning to—or recommending."

"Stayed here on a recent business trip and was very pleased overall. The room offered a great balance of function and comfort, with a modern, slightly luxurious feel—ideal for working and relaxing. I was concerned that my room (1st floor overlooking the square) would be noisy at night. It wasn't at all. Breakfast was excellent, with a wide variety of fresh options to start the day. The only downside was the gym: it’s very small and must be booked in advance, which wasn’t clearly communicated at check-in. I later discovered I could use a nearby partner gym, but had to figure that out myself. Despite that Service overall was very good—staff were helpful and arranged dinner reservations smoothly. The hotel’s location is another big plus: right in the heart of Madrid, with easy access to shopping, restaurants, and cultural sites. It also has a rooftop bar although it was closed during my stay - which may have explained the very reasonable cost. Would definitely stay again, whether for business or a personal trip."

"We arrived just past midnight and the receptionist was quick and efficient in allocating our rooms. We found the reception to be friendly and helpful during our stay. The room, as requested, had a "courtyard" view that was not particularly attractive, but that did not matter at all, as we slept well and were out all day. The restaurant offered an okay continental-style breakfast that was satisfying. However, the restaurant was closed in the evening -plenty of options nearby. We did use the rooftop bar to enjoy the view. The hotel is a short walk from the Prado and Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum . Overall a comfortable hassle free stay."
