PB hotel design editorial

At number 47 on Calle José Abascal, a Belle Époque residential building — its limestone facade worked into Corinthian pilasters, acanthus-leaf cartouches, and wrought-iron balustrades — signals the quiet ambition of Madrid's early twentieth-century bourgeois north long before you step inside. NH Collection Madrid Abascal was fitted into this structure with a renovation that chose dialogue over erasure: the ornamental stone grammar of the exterior is kept intact while the interiors move in an entirely different register, one that is cool, white, and deliberately contemporary. The approach throughout the 178 rooms is essentially monochrome — dark-stained hardwood floors set against an all-white palette of upholstered headboards, lacquered desks with curved legs, and white-painted plaster chandeliers that reinterpret period forms in a flattened, graphic language. On the walls, fine-line architectural drawings rendered directly onto the plaster echo the building's classical ornament without reproducing it literally. The lobby carries this tension further: a double-height space where deep-buttoned white leather column seating and gold silk curtains create a kind of compressed grandeur, modulating the building's generous ceiling heights into something more intimate. The restaurant departs from restraint altogether — wicker globe pendants, tufted chairs in duck-egg blue and cream, and artworks suspended on colored frames give the room an exuberant, deliberately unfinished energy that contrasts productively with the calm of the floors above.

"This is a great place to stay. We enjoyed 4 nights there. The staff are outstanding. Natalie and Mareia at the front desk were so pleasant and eager to help make every detail of our stay perfect. David, the bell hop, was enthusiastic and helpful. We requested a room change and he jumped into action with a big smile to help us get settled into the perfect room overlooking the boulevard. Every day he recognized us and immediately sprung into action if for no other reason than to say hello and be sure we were well cared for. In the restaurant/bar the team of Jose, Javier and Bogdan went above and beyond in assisting with room service for cocktail hour, preparing a G&T and opening wine in our room. The food was great quality and perfect for augmenting just when we needed, around extensive meals out and about in Madrid. Breakfast room service was exquisite with the smoothie detox drink and oatmeal helping to get us off to a healthy start! Aside from all the service, the location is great in the residential Chamberi region, close to the best of old Madrid. Easy walking through historic neighborhoods and chill residential areas, parks and plazas. Nearby the historic old city sites."

"The room was very disappointing. It was noisy due to the fridge and far too hot, even though the radiator had been turned off. Overall, it was a bad experience."

"Excellent hotel of superior quality. Reception/greeting, checkout staff all very friendly and welcoming. Breakfasts amazing. Nothing too much trouble. Location fantastic with 3 metro stations within 5 minutes walk on metro 20 mins to Retiro park, Sol, Callor Millor street, Grand Via. Airport took us 30minutes to and from hotel direct to Nuevos Ministerios tube on line 8, then to line 10 one stop to Gregorio Maranon (hotel is 5 minutes walk along Jose Abascal street to nos 47). Thankyou to all hotel staff, my wife and i had a 5 day stay. BRILLIANT."
