PB hotel design editorial

At the turn of the twentieth century, the Duke of Santo Mauro commissioned one of Madrid's most refined private palaces along Calle Zurbano, in the quietly aristocratic Almagro district where the Ensanche expansion was reshaping the city's northern reaches. That neoclassical hôtel particulier — its limestone facade articulated with arched windows, rusticated pilasters, and a mansard roofline of evident French influence — was converted into Santo Mauro, A Luxury Collection Hotel in 1991, with interiors developed to preserve the ceremonial grandeur of the original enfilade rooms while absorbing the functions of a 51-room property. The images confirm how fully that balance was achieved. In the bar, walls tiled floor to ceiling with small antiqued mirrors in square frames create a multiplication effect around a Murano glass chandelier and a graphic black-and-white geometric carpet — theatrical and precise in equal measure. The restaurant is housed in the palace's original boiserie-panelled library, its arched shelves filled with leather-bound volumes, a verde antico marble fireplace anchoring one end and toile-patterned curtains softening the formality. Guest rooms carry the same blue tonality visible in the courtyard's painted woodwork — deep teal Venetian plaster walls against tufted velvet headboards and Louis XV-style marquetry side tables, or quieter rooms with slate-blue panels, black velvet day sofas, and gilded bronze occasional tables that reference mid-century French furnishing without replicating it.

Santo Mauro, a Luxury Collection Hotel Reviews

"I stayed at Santo Mauro Luxury Hotel for three nights at the end of April 2026. I booked this hotel for the first leg of a trip to Spain to celebrate my mother’s 75th birthday. From the moment we stepped into the hotel’s grounds, we were immediately greeted by the friendliest and kindest staff members, ranging from the door man to the front desk personnel and the head of concierge. I had booked a junior suite and because I am a platinum elite Marriott Bonvoy member, I asked if I could be upgraded to a bigger suite. Not only was my room upgraded to a bigger suite, I was upgraded to the most beautiful, truly breathtaking and luxurious suite. My mother and I felt like we had stepped into a fairy tale room. We were also happily surprised when we were informed that our suite was ready hours before the regular check-in time, which allowed us to be able to drop off our bags and begin our vacation and fight our jetlag from traveling in a red eye flight from NYC. I cannot express my gratitude enough to Carmen Marchese, Head of Concierge, Paula Carzoglio, from the Concierge Dep’t. and Paula Gonzalez at the front desk, for making sure that our stay was the most memorable experience, for arranging a birthday/welcome gift for my mother with a personalized birthday card and a bottle of bubbly and cake and for arranging the best massages at the spa which was exactly what we needed to unwind and kick off our vacation. As a platinum elite Marriott Bonvoy member, I chose the breakfast as my welcome gift and it was the most delicious breakfast. The breakfast is served at La Biblioteca with an a la carte menu consisting of high-quality Spanish products matched with the professional and highly attentive service. I can easily go on and on raving about our stay at Santo Mauro because we had the best experience and we highly recommend it."

"My one concern when booking my room was Santo Mauro’s location; I feared it might be too far from the Prado and other sights we panned on seeing. As it turned out, the hotel’s location is another attribute (in addition to character, comfort and great service) that make it special. Its upscale neighborhood is quiet and safe and a nice place to retreat to after a day of sightseeing. There are several cafes and restaurants nearby offering the chance to experience the cosmopolitan side of Madrid. And the walk to Prado (it’s a short cab ride for those who don’t want to walk) is a pleasant stroll along the Paseo. This is a special hotel and I’ll definitely stag there again if I return to Madrid."

"Beautiful, luxurious hotel with good location, exceptional front desk staff. I used upgrade certificates for a suite (room 050) which I wish I did not waste them on. While the room looked nice, there was a strong sewage odor throughout the stay. The hotel explained it was due to the age of building and they did try and mask it with sprays, which was uncomfortable and overwhelming. A room change was offered on the last day but wasn't practical. Love the hotel and staff, however, I recommend avoiding the room the Duchesse's put her in-laws in (Room 050) - (I see why she put them there)!"
