PB hotel design editorial

At the heart of Puerta del Sol, where Madrid's street grid converges on its most historically charged plaza, a mid-century limestone block originally built as a government ministry was transformed into the Madrid EDITION in 2021 by Ian Schrager and architect John Pawson. The exterior courtyard at night tells the whole story of the project's central tension: a Churrigueresque portal — all volcanic stone carving, gilded crest, and crimson lacquered door — is set flush against a rational 1950s facade of gridded limestone bays that could not be less interested in ornament. That collision is entirely deliberate, and the hotel wears it with confidence across its 200 rooms and six floors. Inside, Pawson's characteristic restraint shapes the guest rooms into studies in chalk-white plaster, large-format limestone tile floors, and sculptural headboards whose organic silhouettes borrow from Spanish Baroque foliage without quoting it literally. Faux-fur throws and cream boucle armchairs warm what might otherwise veer toward austerity. The restaurant moves in a completely different register — dark walnut coffered walls laid in a fret pattern, curved saffron-yellow banquettes, marble-top tables, and a single pendant light suspended like a molten moon, a room that channels the drama of a Madrid supper club from a grander era. The rooftop pool deck, teak-clad and planted with olive trees and low Mediterranean shrubs, offers an unexpected quietness above one of Europe's noisiest intersections.

"While visiting Madrid with my family (4 adults) we were told by the hotel bar staff at The Punch Room we could not be served because there were not enough bar stools for all of us. My husband asked if we could sit at the 2 available and stand to which we were told no. So we moved to a bench in the lounge area my husband went to order drinks and again were told we could not have a drink sitting on the bench. So we asked if we could sit at one of the 3 couches available and were told all the couches, tables, are for hotel guests only. I have never been refused service at any hotel bar because we were not guests there. The staff was dismissive, rude, and made us feel very uncomfortable. As a big traveler for work and personal I will never stay at any Edition Hotels and will make sure any chance I get to reiterate that sentiment. My husband and 2 adult children 24 & 22 were made to feel like we did something wrong. The Edition Madrid, The Punch Room, not a good way to do business, I think your bar staff needs hospitality retraining."

"Dear Madrid Edition Team, I wanted to take a moment to sincerely thank everyone at the hotel for making our stay so memorable. As a Platinum Marriott Bonvoy member, I travel frequently, and I truly appreciate the level of care, warmth, and professionalism your team demonstrated throughout our visit. Our check-in experience with Jessica was exceptional. She was pleasant, welcoming, and incredibly helpful, setting the tone for what turned out to be a wonderful stay. I would also like to extend my gratitude to Amalia, with whom I corresponded before our arrival regarding our celebration of our 30th wedding anniversary. The thoughtful touches in our room were greatly appreciated. The champagne and dessert were such a lovely surprise and made the occasion feel even more special. Our room was beautiful, comfortable, and impeccably prepared. Breakfast at the restaurant was another highlight. The food was delicious and well presented, and the atmosphere was relaxed. Ivan and his team were attentive, friendly, and genuinely focused on taking great care of the guests. Throughout our stay, every member of the staff we encountered was warm, gracious, and professional. The hospitality, attention to detail, and welcoming spirit truly made our visit feel special. It was a delightful, relaxing, and memorable experience from start to finish. Please extend our appreciation to everyone involved in making our anniversary celebration so enjoyable. We are very grateful and look forward to returning in the future."

"The Madrid EDITION is easily one of the finest hotels in Europe. The exterior and lobby are elegant and refined, but it is the rooms themselves that truly stand out. They are beautifully designed, spacious, and somehow manage to make you feel like you are genuinely living in the city rather than simply staying in a hotel, with the energy and history of Madrid right outside your window. What made the stay truly exceptional, however, was the service. Every interaction with the staff was warm, attentive, and professional. Their hospitality was simply unparalleled and made the experience even more memorable."
