PB hotel design editorial

At the heart of Puerta del Sol, where Madrid's street grid converges on its most historically charged plaza, a mid-century limestone block originally built as a government ministry was transformed into the Madrid EDITION in 2021 by Ian Schrager and architect John Pawson. The exterior courtyard at night tells the whole story of the project's central tension: a Churrigueresque portal — all volcanic stone carving, gilded crest, and crimson lacquered door — is set flush against a rational 1950s facade of gridded limestone bays that could not be less interested in ornament. That collision is entirely deliberate, and the hotel wears it with confidence across its 200 rooms and six floors. Inside, Pawson's characteristic restraint shapes the guest rooms into studies in chalk-white plaster, large-format limestone tile floors, and sculptural headboards whose organic silhouettes borrow from Spanish Baroque foliage without quoting it literally. Faux-fur throws and cream boucle armchairs warm what might otherwise veer toward austerity. The restaurant moves in a completely different register — dark walnut coffered walls laid in a fret pattern, curved saffron-yellow banquettes, marble-top tables, and a single pendant light suspended like a molten moon, a room that channels the drama of a Madrid supper club from a grander era. The rooftop pool deck, teak-clad and planted with olive trees and low Mediterranean shrubs, offers an unexpected quietness above one of Europe's noisiest intersections.

"Just arrived this afternoon : 1. 45 minutes from arrival in hotel to finish check in - was told to go to bar and someone will call us when check in queue smaller but nobody ever came to get us - so after 25 minutes waiting in bar area back to reception and then another 20 minutes wait in very small reception area 2. Another 25 minutes wait before suitcases arrived once we entered room 3. Musky smell of drains in the room 4. Waiting list for sun lounger around pool area - then after 20 minutes wait offered a broken bed 5. Encouraged to order room service online but online service not working 6. Called room service - placed order - was told that delivery would only take 10 minutes - still waiting after 30 minutes and now nobody in room service picking up phone 7. Order : 1 starter out of 2 missing, chicken added to salad missing …but then they brought the missing salad and another Caesar salad witch chicken this time and another pasta complementary without us asking anything complementary. Impossible to eat everything but don’t want to moan about a apologetic gesture Hopefully things will get better now …. Although I doubt it as one staff member told me : staff are just too busy as too many guests with too many requests. Of course . Late check out ( 1 hour extra ) not possible Next time I will be going back to Mandarin Oriental - price not that much more but at least staff will not tell me that guests have too many requests"

"This is a ultra modern luxury hotel in the heart of Madrid. It's close to the Sol, the Gran Vía, the Opera House, the Royal Palace of Spain, and Plaza Mayor. Facility is great, beautiful outdoor pool, fantastic breakfast, and first class service. I would definitely go back to this hotel if I am in Madrid again."

"The Madrid EDITION exceeded every expectation. The rooftop pool is absolutely lovely, and the service up there matches the setting — attentive without being intrusive. The food is delicious too; do yourself a favor and order the guacamole. It's unreal. The breakfast also offers plenty of options to kick-start your day on a high. The staff throughout the hotel were fantastic, checking in to make sure we had everything we needed from arrival to checkout. Rooms are spacious and comfortable — easy to unwind after a full day out. The location is another huge win. It's perfectly central, making it effortless to explore the city on foot. Would stay again in a heartbeat!"
