PB hotel design editorial

At the heart of Puerta del Sol, where Madrid's street grid converges on its most historically charged plaza, a mid-century limestone block originally built as a government ministry was transformed into the Madrid EDITION in 2021 by Ian Schrager and architect John Pawson. The exterior courtyard at night tells the whole story of the project's central tension: a Churrigueresque portal — all volcanic stone carving, gilded crest, and crimson lacquered door — is set flush against a rational 1950s facade of gridded limestone bays that could not be less interested in ornament. That collision is entirely deliberate, and the hotel wears it with confidence across its 200 rooms and six floors. Inside, Pawson's characteristic restraint shapes the guest rooms into studies in chalk-white plaster, large-format limestone tile floors, and sculptural headboards whose organic silhouettes borrow from Spanish Baroque foliage without quoting it literally. Faux-fur throws and cream boucle armchairs warm what might otherwise veer toward austerity. The restaurant moves in a completely different register — dark walnut coffered walls laid in a fret pattern, curved saffron-yellow banquettes, marble-top tables, and a single pendant light suspended like a molten moon, a room that channels the drama of a Madrid supper club from a grander era. The rooftop pool deck, teak-clad and planted with olive trees and low Mediterranean shrubs, offers an unexpected quietness above one of Europe's noisiest intersections.

"The Madrid Edition did not live up to the hype and expectaction. While the service was great, there was nothing special about the stay. Even at W and Ritz they welcome you with a glass of champagne. Here not even a glass of Cava after a long flight. Towels were rough and awful!!! There were a few issues: carpets were dirty, room was dirty, room temp inconsistent, the spa facility was just average, checkin took too long, punch room was a basic lounge and not the speakeasy that it claimed to be In summary there was nothing really special and at times felt like a basic hotel with dim lights"

"A beautiful and modern hotel located in a great part of Madrid. Our suite was spacious, clean and bright, while overlooking a lush courtyard. The restaurants and bars are lively, and all of the staff spoke English. We used Marriott points to cover the cost, so I can’t speak to the value. I can speak to the attentive staff, the great room and the amenities of the hotel…all top notch."

"My husband and I stayed at The Madrid EDITION for one night as a stopover en route to South America. We arrived just after midnight following a flight delay. Check-in was friendly, however it could have been more efficient given the late hour and the fact we were visibly tired. Thanks to my Titanium status, we were upgraded to a loft room with a courtyard view. While the room was larger than a standard deluxe, it had very limited natural light and ended up being the weakest part of our stay. To make matters worse, a member of staff entered the room in a morning, while we were asleep, apparently under the impression we had not checked in. It wasn’t the best start, but the experience improved significantly from that point on, ultimately leading me to rate the stay highly. We kept things simple in the mornings, opting just for coffee after indulging in airline lounges the evening before. The coffee was excellent as you expect in Spain. The hotel’s location is a within easy walking distance of the Royal Palace of Madrid and Mercado de San Miguel, which made for an enjoyable afternoon. We also spent time relaxing by the rooftop pool, which offers great views across Madrid. The rooftop itself is a reason to choose this hotel during summer months. One thing that this hotel excelled at, was the flexibility around late check-out. We were able to stay until 5:30pm, which made a big difference, allowing us to time our airport transfer for our onward flight to South America without a long wait at the airport or being overly tired. Overall, we had a very enjoyable stay and would return, though next time we would request a room with more natural light."

"I can’t say enough nice things about EDITION Madrid. I had a wonderful stay there throughout my travels in Spain, it was my home base in Madrid. The rooms, lobby, rooftop pool, and spa were top notch. I sincerely enjoyed every moment I spent in the hotel! That is largely because of the world-class customer service I received from manager Francisco and his team. Throughout all my travels, I have never dealt with someone who is so professional, kind, and goes above and beyond to provide quality customer service. I was celebrating a promotion and Francisco and his team went above and beyond to ensure I had a memorable stay. I can’t recommend this hotel enough!! Also, I loved the room service churros, will miss those!"
