PB hotel design editorial

Facing one of Madrid's grandest civic squares, where Eduardo Torroja's mid-century urbanism stretches toward the monument to Cervantes, the tower that houses VP Plaza España Design presents a limestone-clad facade of quiet confidence — fourteen floors stepping back from the treeline of the newly reimagined plaza below. The hotel, which carries 214 rooms across its height, was developed as part of the broader regeneration of this corner of central Madrid, its exterior grid of pale stone and floor-to-ceiling glazing visible from the square's full width and framing panoramic views of the historic roofscape in return. The interiors work a familiar contemporary Madrid register — wide-plank oak flooring, upholstered leather headboards in cream and warm taupe, lacquered navy bedside tables trimmed in brass — executed with enough restraint to let the city views carry the rooms rather than compete with them. The real design ambition sits at the top of the building, where the Ginkgo Sky Bar extends across a rooftop terrace: decorative laser-cut screens printed with ginkgo-leaf motifs in monochrome wrap the pool perimeter, the restaurant behind them furnished with channelled terracotta velvet banquettes, emerald lounge chairs, and a geometric patterned stone floor anchored by a sculptural figure at the room's centre. At dusk, with the spires of the Almudena and the Palacio Real catching the last light across the skyline, the elevation proves its point entirely.

"We stayed at the hotel for three nights the rooms are beautifully decorated . We had a spacious room on the 11th floor with great views onto the Plaza . Unfortunately on the first evening I could not sleep due to the loud music from the sky bar until early hours of the morning. This was unexpected and I phoned the reception to complain not something I would normally do.The next morning the duty manager contacted us to apologise and offer us an upgrade where the noise level would be better . We thanked him but said it was not necessary he persisted that he wanted us to have the stay we should and they moved us to their best room . The views are stunning ,we could see the Palace & beyond . We really appreciated the pride he took in his role & the hotel wanting to ensure the guests had the best stay possible ."

"A very modern luxury hotel in a great location. Check in with seamless and was immediately offered an upgrade from a deluxe to a premium room. The cost was $70 per night but moved us from the six floor to the 15th floor that itself is worth it. we also got the breakfast added on which was a five dollar discount offer the regular rate. We were able to occupy our room early. After our check-in, we decide to walk to the biggest park in Madrid it was approximately 1.1 miles away. Takes about 25 to 30 minutes walk from the hotel. But along the way there are multiple stores and restaurants if you want to stop. you can very easily get transportation, including taxis or hard car, such as Uber and bolt. The doormen were very helpful in telling us places to go in restaurants to eat at. A room on the 15th floor overlooked the plaza. The beds are very comfortable as was the bedding. I ordered extra pillows which were memory pillows which allowed me to sleep even better. The bathroom was very spacious and allowed for privacy. very clean with both a shower and a bathtub. There was also a door separating the bath and closet areas from the bed room and sitting area. If you’re a fan of art, there’s plenty to see throughout the entire hotel. Breakfast was also worth the cost. A Buffay style, but also with à la carte options."

"Location: Excellent. Situated on Plaza de España, within easy reach of public transport, a short walk to Gran Vía for shopping, and just 10 minutes from the Royal Palace. Ideal for exploring Madrid. Arrival & Check-in: Efficient but somewhat impersonal. The welcome lacked a sense of warmth—likely impacted by a large seminar taking place during our stay. Our Family Deluxe room wasn’t ready at 1:30 pm, though this was handled well, with a prompt call once it became available. Lobby & First Impressions: Visually impressive but somewhat austere. The design leans heavily toward a business hotel aesthetic rather than a cozy, inviting five-star atmosphere. Not a space that naturally encourages guests to spend time. Room: Spacious and well-appointed. Our corner room on the 8th floor offered lovely views over Plaza de España. Contemporary design, excellent cleanliness, comfortable bedding (including the sofa bed), efficient air conditioning, and quality L’Occitane amenities. Housekeeping: Overall efficient. A minor drawback was the noticeable scent of cleaning products, which could be more delicately fragranced. Similarly, the laundry fragrance on linens was not particularly pleasant (a detail even noted by my son). Breakfast: Fresh and generally high-quality products. Service was attentive, though occasionally a little too quick to clear plates. Room Service: Very good. Fast, efficient, and the food was satisfying. Spa & Pool: Disappointing policy. Charging €10 per guest for access is already questionable for a five-star property, but restricting entry to children under 12—even when accompanied—is not particularly family-friendly. Concierge: Limited interaction, but responsive and helpful when needed. Rooftop / Sky Bar: Access is separate from the hotel, which feels slightly disconnected. I only had a brief look, but the setting is undeniably impressive and worth visiting if time allows. All in all, the hotel feels more like a polished business hotel than a charming, intimate five-star retreat where one would naturally want to unwind with a drink. That said, it remains a highly practical choice—modern, well-run, and exceptionally well-located for a city break in Madrid."

"My stay began on a very positive note, but ultimately ended in a disappointing experience that does not align with the standard this hotel aims to represent. The room was truly excellent: stylish, impeccably clean, and very comfortable. Exactly what one would expect at this level. What made the contrast so striking was the experience at the rooftop lounge and pool area. On a warm 28-degree day, I was seated at a table in the lounge, an area where swimwear is normally permitted. Due to temporary pool maintenance, I was unexpectedly asked to put on a dress. This was despite the fact that I was not walking around, not disturbing anyone, and simply seated in a space where this would typically not be an issue. The way this was handled felt arbitrary and far from guest-oriented. The culinary experience was equally underwhelming. The Caesar salad consisted largely of hard, unappetizing lettuce cores and fell well below what one would expect at this standard. Service in the rooftop bar was slow, inattentive, and lacked the level of professionalism and refinement one would anticipate. What made the situation particularly disappointing is that I raised these concerns with the reception and explicitly asked for a suitable resolution. Unfortunately, this resulted in nothing more than a brief apology, with no follow-up or gesture to address the situation. For a hotel in this segment, this is simply not sufficient. While the hotel clearly has strong elements, there are notable shortcomings in service, consistency, and overall guest experience. It is precisely in how issues are handled that a hotel distinguishes itself. In this case, that opportunity was missed, whereas one would reasonably expect such matters to be taken seriously and resolved in an appropriate manner."
