PB hotel design editorial

At the edge of Santanyí, one of Mallorca's most quietly preserved market towns, a seventeenth-century mallorquín manor and its cluster of agricultural outbuildings were carefully reassembled into Can Ferrereta, a 32-room hotel that opened in 2019 under the Small Luxury Hotels banner. The conversion respected the layered logic of the original finca: honey-coloured sandstone walls left rough-cut and load-bearing, terracotta roof tiles retained in place, arched doorways in local marès limestone kept structurally intact. What you see from the pool terrace is less a hotel than a small hamlet — staggered rooflines, a stone gatehouse arch, ancient olive trees standing where they always stood. Inside, the Madrid-based interior design studio Blanco by Mariló de Castro calibrated the rooms to let the architecture do the heavy lifting. Blackened steel four-poster beds with raw linen canopies, woven rattan headboards, wide-plank oak floors, and houndstooth desk chairs in charcoal wool sit within rooms that keep their original ceiling heights and arched window reveals. The restaurant space beneath its barrel-vaulted marès stone ceiling — original beams fanning out from the crown of each arch — shows the sharpest design hand: a fluted navy bar counter and globe pendants in opaline glass set against six centuries of bare stone, the contrast deliberate and entirely earned.

"A 5 star hotel that exceeds expectations. Beautifully decorated, both the rooms and the exterior, attentive and friendly staff, all located in the heart of Santanyi."

"I stayed here for my birthday and from the moment I got there, I was treated incredibly well. But let’s start with the hotel itself first. It’s absolutely stunning. I’ve stayed in some of the most beautiful hotels in the world and this one may be my new favorite. The details of the design are incredible and you just feel at home immediately. Next, the food: Ocre was one of my favorite experiences. The food was excellent!!! They really care about the food. One of my favorite parts of my stay was how quickly the cleaning staff turned over my room during my stay. I never came back to room that hadn’t been serviced, even if I was gone for about 30 minutes or so. Speaking of the room, wow!!! Get an upgraded room, if possible. It was the best part of my stay. The showers feel like a spa experience. And go to the spa if you can. Best massage of my life. I never really write reviews but this place really earned it."

"From the moment we arrived, this hotel delivered an experience that felt both luxurious and deeply considered in every detail. The property was exactly as advertised — if anything, even more beautiful in person. Every corner of the hotel reflected thoughtful design, from the stunning room décor to the unique spaces such as the library and record room, which gave the hotel a distinctive personality rarely found in modern luxury stays. The atmosphere throughout the property was exceptional. The ambient evening lighting created a calm and elegant mood, complemented perfectly by the hotel’s signature scent that subtly flowed through the public spaces. The scenery surrounding the hotel was breathtaking; everywhere you looked there was natural beauty, making even the simplest walk through the grounds feel special. What stood out most was how comfortable and genuinely welcomed we felt throughout our stay. The team remembered the small but important details — my partner being vegetarian and the fact that we both do not drink alcohol — and this level of attentiveness made the experience feel personal rather than transactional. It is this kind of thoughtful hospitality that separates excellent hotels from truly exceptional ones. The size of the hotel also played a huge part in the quality of the experience. Its more intimate scale allowed service to feel curated, attentive, and highly personalised at every stage. It reaffirmed the idea that smaller luxury hotels often deliver the very best hospitality. Our Junior Suite was absolutely stunning. The attention to comfort and modern convenience was impressive, with soft, crisp bed linen, beautifully designed interiors, USB-C charging points, and even British television channels — small touches that made the stay feel seamless and contemporary. The bathroom amenities were equally memorable, with products that smelt incredible and elevated the entire experience. Service throughout the stay was warm, polished, and attentive. We were personally shown to our room and given a thoughtful introduction to the hotel and its facilities upon arrival, which immediately made us feel welcomed. David and Salvador in particular stood out for their attentiveness and genuine hospitality. Another lovely touch was the constant offering of water whenever arriving back at the hotel or heading out for the day — a simple but very appreciated gesture. The hotel excelled in creating thoughtful moments. Turn-down service included treats and gifts that felt personal rather than routine, and the personalised newspaper was one of the most creative and memorable hospitality touches we have experienced. The wellness facilities were equally impressive. The spa was immaculate, peaceful, and beautifully maintained, with fantastic amenities that made it genuinely relaxing. The gym was another highlight — private, quiet, and never overcrowded, which allowed for a much more enjoyable experience than many larger resorts. Poolside service was also excellent, with sunbed towels replenished quickly and efficiently at all times. Dining was a major highlight of the stay. Ocre was exceptional, delivering beautifully executed food in a refined setting. Breakfast each morning was served in an absolutely stunning location, surrounded by scenic views that enhanced the experience even further. The quality of the breakfast offering was excellent, with our only disappointment being that we wished there had simply been more of it. If there is one area for improvement, it would be the variation within the menus. For guests staying more than two nights, the dining options could benefit from greater variety to encourage more exploration across longer stays. Overall, this hotel succeeds in delivering not just luxury, but atmosphere, personality, and genuine hospitality. It is a property that understands the importance of detail, and it shows in every aspect of the guest experience."

"We had the best honeymoon experience at Can Ferrereta. The staff all went above and beyond, and you could truly feel the magic and joy in the air across the whole hotel. I’d absolutely recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a special, romantic getaway. The food was exceptional across breakfast, the Pool Bar and the Ocre Restaurant. We really enjoyed our Spa experience - it was the best massage I have ever had. I cannot wait to return because the hotel stay was a fantastic experience."

"An exceptional hotel in every respect. The staff are truly outstanding—remarkably kind, attentive, and always available, whether at reception, the spa, or in the restaurants. The personalized welcome is especially appreciated, with thoughtful touches in the room upon arrival—you feel at ease from the very moment you check in. The dining experience is also of a very high standard, both at the restaurant led by chef Carlos Garcia and at the poolside restaurant. The hotel itself is simply stunning, both in the common areas (pool, library, lobby, terraces, spa, etc) and in the rooms. The attention to detail is impressive—every single element feels carefully considered, which is quite rare. Ideally located in the heart of the historic center of Santanyí, the property still feels like a true haven of peace. Finally, the staff’s recommendations are excellent, whether for nearby beaches and coves or for restaurants in Santanyí. In summary: a place I would recommend without hesitation—and one you’ll instantly want to return to."
