PB hotel design editorial

Perched above Palma on the wooded hillside of Son Vida — Mallorca's most rarefied residential enclave — a fourteenth-century castle that once belonged to the Marquis of la Torre was converted into a hotel in 1961, making Castillo Hotel Son Vida the oldest five-star property on the island. The crenellated tower and sandstone arcades visible at the entrance are not ornamental gestures; they are the original medieval fabric, absorbed into later additions that extend the building's footprint while keeping the castle's martial silhouette intact. The surrounding Son Vida estate, developed across pine-covered hills with golf courses and private villas, gives the property a sense of remove from the rest of the island that no amount of interior renovation can replicate. Recent refurbishment brought two distinct interior registers to the guestrooms — one leaning toward crisp European modernism, with pale upholstery, brass wall sconces, dark-stained cabinetry and warm timber balcony doors framing pine-filtered views toward the Bay of Palma; the other richer and more layered, with terracotta leather walls, slub-linen four-poster frames with indigo ikat headboard panels, and geometric kilim accents drawing on a broader Mediterranean textile tradition. The pool terrace, shaded by mature Aleppo pines and open to the bay beyond the estate's iron perimeter, carries the atmosphere of a private hilltop garden rather than a hotel facility. The restaurant maintains a formal European register — Louis XV-style chairs in pale brocade, white-draped tables, and floor-to-ceiling glazing that turns the Palma skyline into the room's primary decoration.

"Let me start by saying that if you’re looking for a castle-like hotel with an amazing view and a top golf course, this is the place—super renovated, full of Spanish history, and very good food. Almost too good to be true. Until you reach the word hospitality in a luxury collection place and meet Mrs.Teresa de Haro at the front desk. Let me add that I’m currently a Titanium Elite with Bonvoy, with over 80 nights on my account this year, and a long history as an Ambassador Elite. I have never encountered such a disrespectful front desk at a Marriott. I booked two rooms: one for my two teenage kids and one for myself. Nr. 1: Madam Terre or Teresa will never reply to me in English, but in pure, beautiful Spanish. Nr. 2: She managed to put both rooms in my son's name, and she won’t change them back to my name and on my Bonvoy number. Nr. 3 She will gossip in Spanish in front of me, saying that I’m either stupid or very stupid Nr. 3 She will not offer an upgrade or late check-out for the simple reason that the rooms are not in my name:) Nr. 4 She will again answer me in Spanish that if I don't like the treatment, I’m crazy Nr. 5 When asked to see the manager or to be treated nicely, I was reminded that I’m not in the right place to ask this. The next morning, I was offered an apology from a very kind young front desk clerk who was there when everything happened. I opened an investigation with Marriott, but I’m already home!"

"Visited at a quiet time in April….. can’t fault the hotel, genuinely beautiful, stunning art everywhere you look, views out to the sea and the city of Palma are a pleasant backdrop. Gym great, we don’t use the spa but looked nice. Breakfast as good as any hotel didn’t use the restaurant but ate at the roof terrace once, no complaints! As with most high end hotels, it’s the level of attention from the staff which sets it apart… every interaction was pleasant… the manager arranged a cocktail evening to meet the guests which was a lovely touch.. The morning yoga was a refreshing start to the day and the instructor was excellent Old world charm, beautiful decor and both our room and the pool area were a pleasure to enjoy. Thankyou hotel Castillo Son Vida for such a lovely visit."

"Pretty hotel, but definitely not a 5 star experience. Was not informed ahead of our stay (or even at check-in) that the hotel was undergoing a large, loud renovation project during our stay. No apology for inconvenience, note on website or offer of discount was given. We paid extra for a balcony that we couldn’t use because the outdoor renovations were directly in front of our room and banging hammers, and buzz saws were constantly going and piles of discarded carpeting & construction mess were obstructing our view. Not worth the price we paid. Very disappointing stay."

"First, this is a Marriott property and you can get all the Marriott credits. Second, it is by all measures a 4 star hotel. No where no how can this ever be 5 star. The hotel is neglected old Castle. There is charm in being in a Castle. The Son Vidas area is considered private and upscale and many rooms offer nice pastoral, golf course and ocean views. The spa is coed , clothing is optional and May guests are naked. This may not be comfortable for some travelers. In fact, nudity even extends to the pool and spa. To each his/her own. The breakfast is very limited. Think travel lodge that’s 2-3 star. There are no fresh juices. The bar food did not agree with me and dinner at the restaurant was very limited. There are many older German guests and some asian guests. The staff are generally polite."
