PB hotel design editorial

A 17th-century Augustinian convent tucked into a narrow lane in Palma's old town provides the structural bones for Convent de la Missió, where the conversion brief demanded that centuries of ecclesiastical history absorb a quietly radical interior language without flinching. The rendered facade, smoothed to a cool limestone grey, gives almost nothing away from the street — a disciplined row of brushed-steel planters holding clipped topiary cones the only hint of curatorial intent. Inside, the original sandstone walls and exposed timber ceiling beams were kept intact, their warm ochre texture placed in deliberate conversation with an all-white and pale-oak palette that designer Catalina Bosch applied across the 14 rooms and suites. Freestanding oval bathtubs positioned within the bedroom itself, acrylic ghost chairs, and sculpted white floor lamps with a papery, translucent quality give the guest rooms a serene, almost monastic composure that feels less like irony and more like continuity. The restaurant, run for years by Michelin-starred chef Marc Fosh, sits beneath a glass-roofed courtyard where original sandstone columns anchor one wall while warm teak decking and linen-upholstered dining chairs bring the contemporary forward without erasing what came before. On the rooftop, a dark-tiled plunge pool flanked by white timber screens and low sunloungers opens across the Palma skyline at dusk — the old city's terracotta rooflines and distant cathedral visible just beyond the cypress hedge line.

"This boutique hotel is in an excellent location for exploring the old town on foot. The street itself is nondescript, but just a few minutes' walk brings you to bustling commercial areas with shops and restaurants. Be aware that the hotel is difficult to access by car. Our taxi driver, who had picked us up at the Palma airport, refused to drive the narrow streets, so we had to haul our luggage up the tiled sidewalks a few blocks. For us this was not a big deal, but for people with mobility issues it could be a problem. The hotel is in a former convent, and the original architecture is beautifully preserved. Although our room was small, it was comfortable and very quiet. We had no issue adjusting the air conditioner to our preferred temperature, including overnight when we like our room chilly for sleeping. There wasn't a view at all – just other buildings – but we don't stay in urban hotels for the view. The bath was also very small but had the necessities, although we would have appreciated more than one bath towel and one hand towel per guest, and washcloths would have been helpful. The biggest negative about our stay was that there was a plug-in air freshener in the bathroom, and the smell was overwhelming. Moreover, a puddle of the heavily-scented liquid somehow wound up in the toiletries tray, and we didn't notice it until we discovered that some of our toiletries were wet (and horribly stinky from the air freshener). The smell was tenacious! Perhaps management would consider switching to a diffuser option, or a more delicate fragrance, if one is needed at all. The breakfast buffet that was included with our room rate was stellar. It offered an opulent cold buffet; hot items could be ordered. Orange juice was freshly squeezed. We had a delightful lunch in the Michelin-starred restaurant, but that's a topic for a separate review. Before I conclude this review, I absolutely must mention the service. Everyone employed by the hotel was congenial and helpful, which is not a given even in the so-called hospitality industry! Overall, we enjoyed our stay and hope to return in the not-too-distant future."

"My wife and I popped down to Pa for a couple of days and stayed in this truly wonderful hotel in the heart of the old town of Palma. Understated elegance combined with excellent and very friendly service in an enchanting former (but very comfortable) Monastery superbly located in the old quarter of Palma. Very special!"
