PB hotel design editorial

For nearly a century, the white-rendered buildings at the tip of the Formentor Peninsula drew a particular kind of traveller — writers, royals, the quietly discerning — to one of the Mediterranean's most theatrically beautiful corners. That original Hotel Formentor, built in 1929, has now been remade as the Four Seasons Resort Mallorca at Formentor, and the central design challenge was exactly the kind architects relish: how to expand and modernise a beloved landmark without erasing what made it beloved. Estudio Lamela, working alongside SCT Estudio de Arquitectura, added an entire floor to the building while preserving its signature façade — white render, terracotta pantiles, timber-bracketed eaves — so that the massing now carries the warmth of vernacular Mallorcan architecture even as the structure behind it is entirely new. Gilles & Boissier handled the interiors across all 110 rooms and suites, and the images show how confidently the Paris-based duo translated their sensibility into this specific landscape. Guest rooms are dressed in sand-washed linens, woven grasscloth headboard panels, and mid-century chairs with dark walnut frames — an edit that feels coastal without being obvious about it. The bar's oval stone counter, backed by shelves of terracotta amphorae and framed by carved timber screens, gestures toward the island's Roman past with a light touch. Outside, an infinity pool disappears into pine forest, with the bay and its mountain backdrop beyond. The property holds the first LEED Gold certification in the Balearic Islands — proof that the renovation's ambitions extended well beyond the visual.

Four Seasons Resort Mallorca at Formentor Reviews

"First of all, this is a beautiful hotel—and an expensive one. As such, expectations are naturally very high, and unfortunately they were not always fully met. Positives Suite: Our suite was spacious, elegant, and very well equipped (including a Dyson hair dryer), with a Lavazza coffee machine and a lovely sea-facing terrace. The bathroom had everything one could need, including a large shower. A separate guest restroom at the entrance of the suite was a particularly practical feature. Housekeeping: Excellent overall. The room was almost always serviced in the morning (except on Sunday) and maintained in impeccable condition. Facilities: Two very pleasant swimming pools: one adults-only and one family-friendly. The water was warm, the loungers comfortable, and service—when functioning properly (see below)—included fresh water and towels. There is also a large and pleasant jacuzzi in a quiet part of the garden. A beautiful public beach is located just a five-minute walk from the hotel, with reserved loungers for hotel guests, which is very convenient. Gym/Fitness: Extremely well equipped, with state-of-the-art machines. Wi-Fi: Excellent throughout the property. Restaurants: The traditional restaurant, Mel, offered a mixed experience; the portions were unfortunately as small as the prices were high. The second restaurant, offering Japanese-Peruvian fusion cuisine, was excellent: generous portions, broad menu selection, and very good service. Breakfast: Absolutely outstanding, with a wide selection of fresh products and excellent service. Staff: The hotel is very child-friendly, and the staff were consistently kind, understanding, and helpful with children. Areas for Improvement (Especially at This Price Point) Upon arrival, the General Manager personally greeted us, which was a very thoughtful touch and much appreciated. However, after being told that our luggage would be sent to the room immediately, we were disappointed to still be waiting more than 30 minutes later. I ultimately had to go downstairs myself to retrieve it. On both the first and second day, when we went to the pool around 4:00 p.m., there were no towels available. We had to ask several times and wait more than 30 minutes before receiving any. On the fourth day, when we arrived at the pool, two staff members saw us but continued chatting for approximately 10 minutes before attending to us, despite the area not being busy. Sustainability / Portion Management: On several occasions, we requested smaller portions (e.g., one egg, one pancake, one scoop of ice cream), yet larger portions were systematically served, resulting in unnecessary waste. We were also charged for the larger portions regardless. This gave the impression that profitability may be prioritized over sustainability. Service at the beach restaurant was also slow; both ordering and food delivery took a considerable amount of time. The children’s playroom offers many electronic/digital games but relatively few educational or creative activities. Overall Overall, we had a very enjoyable stay. However, for a hotel in this price category, improvements are still needed—particularly with respect to service at the pool and beach."

"An amazing experience. Very elegant hotel with stunning view and direct access to the beach. Rooms are beautiful, modern and spacious. Restaurants offer a wide variety of options and put a lot of emphasis on local and high quality products. Beyond the infrastructure of the hotel, what is worth noting and makes a difference is the kindness and the dedication of the staff in all areas of the hotel. There is a very strong customer focused culture with very high standards. My wife and I have never experienced such a level of service anywhere else in the past and this is why we will return to this hotel. We cannot recommend more this hotel to couples or families. Thanks again to the staff."

"From the moment you check in with 3 very small kids the way they welcome and care for children is truly exceptional. Thoughtful surprises, warm gestures, and genuine attention make families feel instantly at home without ever losing the hotel’s serene, elevated atmosphere. The rooms are stunning, the vibe relaxed yet luxurious, and the food consistently excellent especially the sushi-Peruvian restaurant, which is crazy good and an absolute must. A destination where both adults and kids can truly unwind, explore, and enjoy every detail. A place that stays with you long after you leave."

"Great service from booking to airport pick up to departure. Nothing to be found fault with at all! A great helpful staff and team. Great new rooms and baths, typical of a new Four Seasons… value well you get what you pay for! The hotel is located a little on its own, not really many places you can walk too and the beach is not a private one. That was not really an issue for us, the only problem where a lot of wasps when you were going to eat outside and that made one lunch a disaster, they need to fix this for next Summer!"

"One of the best FS I have been to anywhere in the world. Amazing stunning location on the protected Formentor coast. Excellent activities. Love the adults only pool and second family inclusive pool. Stunning beach. The bike ride locally was wonderful. But above all the staff went above and beyond. A 6* service with all staff which made the hotel stay so meaningful"
