PB hotel design editorial

Jutting into the crystalline waters of Illetas on Mallorca's southwest coast, a rocky promontory that has defined the site since the hotel's original construction in the 1960s gives Hotel de Mar Gran Meliá its most irreplaceable asset — a position so close to the Mediterranean that the sea is visible from virtually every angle of the property. The building itself is a mid-century modernist block, six floors of terracotta-brick facade with deep timber-framed balconies stepping back in a rhythm that softens what might otherwise read as a hard horizontal mass against the pine-covered hillside. The hotel carries a particular cultural distinction: Joan Miró, who lived and worked on Mallorca for much of his later life, had a personal connection to the property, and works in his unmistakable biomorphic vocabulary still hang in the guest rooms — visible in the images here, framed simply against cream plaster walls. Inside, the rooms combine rojo alicante marble floors with warm honey-toned timber joinery on doors and folding balcony screens, the sea framed through full-height glazing like a painting that changes with the light. The garden terraces descend through stone-walled gardens shaded by mature Aleppo pines and palms to a dark-bottomed lap pool edged in timber decking, white canopied daybeds arranged across manicured lawn toward the water. The beach restaurant keeps its palette deliberately bleached — white-painted shiplap screens, rattan pendant shades, wicker chairs — drawing warmth from the bay view rather than from the interior itself.

Hotel De Mar, a Gran Meliá Hotel Reviews

"The hotel is overall lovely. The reception, rooms, and breakfast is perfect. Sunbeds on the balcony would be a good idea. However, for me the lack of sunbeds around the pool let the hotel down massively. People will reserve sunbeds by putting down items without sitting on them for most of the day. On our first day we were told there was no sunbeds and we could pay €160 for a double Bali bed! For the price you pay you would expect there to be enough beds for everyone. On our last day we were told there was no umbrella for us in 30 degree heat. Such a shame and a factor that would determine if we stay here again."

"Best hotels in the World this certainly is not. Far from it. The service was not up to the mark. It’s either understaffed or those they have are poorly trained. The level of attentiveness and attention to detail was missing throughout. We stayed in a Master Suite which was a fantastic room but when I pay for a premium room I do expect a few extras and treats. Nothing here. The Level has been taken out which is a great Meliá feature. We were told it had been integrated into the room. It was nowhere to be seen. Sorry but the hotel is trading on a historic reputation and is nowhere near the standard I’d expect from a property that claims to be among the best in the World. Experience was more like a 4 star."

"I stayed at the hotel overnight before heading into Palma to meet friends. Upon check-in, I was pleasantly surprised to receive a room upgrade, which was a lovely touch. The staff were very friendly and helpful throughout my stay. The room itself was clean, spacious, and comfortable. The hotel’s location is ideal if you’re looking for a relaxing stay by the sea while still being within easy reach of Palma. Breakfast was a highlight particularly the à la carte options, which were high quality and very enjoyable. The buffet selection was a bit more average in comparison, especially considering the overall standard of the hotel. The swimming pool area was clean and well-maintained, and the surrounding public areas of the hotel were also kept to a high standard. The location is convenient, with Palma about a 15-minute taxi ride away and Puerto Portals around 10 minutes by taxi. Although I didn’t have lunch or dinner at the hotel, the menu looked appealing. Overall, the staff were consistently helpful, and I had a very pleasant stay."
