PB hotel design editorial

Pressed against a red-rock promontory at Punta Negra on Mallorca's southwest coast, where pine forests give way to the turquoise shallows of the Balearic Sea, the St. Regis Mardavall was conceived from the outset as a purpose-built resort rather than a conversion — a rarity among European luxury hotels of its generation. Opened in 2003 and spread across low-rise terraced wings in warm ochre render with arched loggias and terracotta roof tiles, the massing takes its cues from traditional Mallorcan manor architecture, the finca aesthetic scaled up to accommodate 121 rooms and suites without losing the residential feeling that defines the property's appeal. The interiors, refreshed in recent years, layer local material warmth against a restrained contemporary palette. Rooms carry terracotta tile floors under exposed dark timber beams in the bungalow categories, while upgraded suites shift to wide-plank oak flooring beneath silvery damask-patterned wallcoverings, the headboard wall backlit behind a geometric textile panel. Deep cobalt blue appears consistently as an accent — velvet bench ends, upholstered chaise longues, tufted ottomans — anchoring the sand and linen tones of the soft furnishings. Outside, mosaic-tiled pools step down toward manicured lawns that end at the rocky shoreline, and the terrace dining pergola, draped with bougainvillea climbing whitewashed columns, captures the Mediterranean light at dusk in the way that only a west-facing coastal site on this island genuinely can.

"This was my worst hotel experience of my life. I am a Bonvoy Titanium status member and have stayed at numerous St Regis and Ritz Carlton properties. All of them disappointed but this stay disappoints the most. I was received at the lobby and then immediately forgotten. The hotel wasnt even busy. We were the only ones in the lobby. We were offered a welcome drink then forgotten about and offered again after 15 mins. It took over 30 mins just to get a room key. I was immediately told that a status upgrade wasnt available because "my stay is too long". Not there arent any rooms available, but because my 6 day stay was "too long". We were told a shuttle runs back and forth from the resort to the beach. But when we went to use the shuttle we found out its only a one-way shuttle. If I didnt make sure to confirm the return I would have been stranded because I left my cash in the room. The service on property is useless. Either no one answers the phone, you get wrong information, or its someone else's department to help you, shoulder shrug, and the cycle repeats. The food is so bad, bland and mediocre and the breakfast buffet is a joke. I dont trust the Michelin star they claim everywhere. The mini bar is never restocked without repeatedly harassing. The spa tub in the room didnt properly function. Just a complete disappointment in every way and thats without even factoring in the price of the hotel. Do yourself a favor and just stay at Four Seasons."

"This is a big sprawling resort just on the outskirts of Palma and as such lives up to the St. Regis brand. The surrounding area is quite busy with a major yacht basin nearby. As seen from the website the focus is a large pool that slopes towards the sea with very comfortable chaise loungers, sofas and pool attendants. There is a small beach that one can walk to but has no amenities besides a boat dock. The hotel interior is fairly straight forward with what I would call a modern "Scottsdale" look. The rooms are very updated, quite comfortable and well air-conditioned. PLUS - the hairdryer is a Dyson!! Staff were great! No complaints what so ever - just I prefer more boutique hotels."

"Very glad to have stayed here. Peaceful setting located in front of a tranquil cove with great hiking route, spacious room, great dining options, and intimate services. The lush garden is also a much-appreciated feature of this resort too. The only downside is that the restaurant by the see closes on Mondays and Tuesdays, which is a shame because their Jamaican Jerk Chicken is phenomenal."

"The facilities are not the best but the people are amazing. Especially the people at the dining room, so generous, friendly with the kids and just lovely they make you want to come back! Also the guys that works at the kids club pool was absolutely amazing. I recommend it for a family vacation!!"
