PB hotel design editorial

Among the whitewashed lanes of Marbella's casco antiguo, where Andalusian townhouses have stood largely unchanged since the sixteenth century, a carefully restored three-storey manor on Calle Santo Cristo carries a particular weight of local history. La Fonda Heritage Hotel was born from one of the old town's most storied addresses — a building whose sandstone portal and wrought-iron balconies, visible in the exterior images at dusk, speak directly to the vernacular language of southern Spanish domestic architecture. The conversion preserved the original facade with conspicuous fidelity: limewashed render, terracotta roof tiles, rejas grilles on the ground-floor windows, and traditional gas-lamp street lighting that keeps the building in quiet conversation with its neighbours rather than announcing itself as something new. Inside, the interiors take a confident step away from folkloric Andalusian pastiche. Bedrooms are dressed in a spare palette of ivory, charcoal, and ochre — white-painted exposed timber beam ceilings meeting low-profile platform beds with curved upholstered headboards, black steel x-frame side tables, and brass pendant lights that carry a mid-century industrial character. The restaurant works a different register entirely: a curved channelled banquette in warm cream velvet runs beneath floor-to-ceiling terracotta drapes, lit from below, while oak dining chairs in a geometric printed fabric and gilt palm-leaf wall sconces pull the room toward a relaxed Art Deco warmth. A planted rooftop terrace, surrounded by banana palms, climbing vines, and built-in cushioned benches in sage linen, gives the property an unexpectedly lush outdoor room above the rooftops.

About

La Fonda Heritage Hotel is located on the picturesque Plaza del Santo Cristo, in the heart of Marbella's Old Town. It is the first Relais & Châteaux property in Andalusia. Boasting luxury accommodations, gourmet restaurants, open courtyards and patios, this boutique hotel brings Andalusian charm to life in a stylish haven of modern comfort. Comprising three restored buildings, this historic landmark was once a private residence. It also served as a church and a school before it was transformed into a hotel, eventually becoming a restaurant in the late '80s. A window into Marbella´s "Golden Years", La Fonda became an important meeting place for intellectuals, artists and socialites, which played a significant role in the tourist development of the city. Its recent renovation preserved the heritage of this important site while revealing important architectural discoveries, such as the altar of the 16th-century Hermitage of San Sebastián and original murals and frescoes. Accessed by covered passageways, the 20 rooms and suites feature contemporary interiors each boasting its own individual characteristics and charm. A few feature expansive terraces, some feature traditional balconies overlooking the square, and others sit high above the city's rooftops. Home to a trio of dining experiences, including the signature restaurant Jane - where Andalusian and Mediterranean produce blends with global flavours. Breakfast is served each morning at Los Patios de la Fonda, and a creative brunch menu is available throughout the day. The hotel also boasts a stylish Sky Bar. This luxurious hotel offers a 24-hour front desk, airport transfers, room service and free WiFi.

"This is one of the best hotels I have ever stayed in. It's an absolutely unique place, being three historic buildings dating from the early 16th century, located in a beautiful square in the old town of Marbella. It has so much history - it was a private residence, then converted into a church, then a school, and then it was a luxury hotel during the 1960s. However at the end of the last century it was forgotten and nature took over. It has now been restored again, even including two ancient trees in an inner courtyard which have been incorporated into the design! I was hugely privileged to be offered an upgrade to the room I had booked and the room I was given was pure luxury - beautiful and spacious but still managing to feel very homely. The bed was so comfortable and the shower room beautifully designed. And the staff are just the best! Super professional but friendly and so attentive and helpful. All in all this is an amazing hotel and I highly recommend. I only wish I had stayed here longer. Thank you to everyone at La Fonda for a wonderful stay."

"We have just returned from a wonderful 4 night stay at this hotel. It’s probably one of the best boutique hotels we’ve stayed at. From initial contact, to book the restaurant, all the way through to check out, an amazing experience. It’s not only the bricks and mortar, the furnishings etc that make a hotel amazing, it’s the staff and the staff here are wonderful. The food was delicious and oh my, the croquetas at The Bodega, no words! Thanks so much La Fonda, we will be back!"

"This place is amazing. Very friendly and helpful staff, beautiful atmosphere and nicely located in old town Marbella. The room was very fresh too. Don’t miss the tapas bar hosted by the hotel, situated on the cutest plaza, just outside the door."
