PB hotel design editorial

Perched above the olive groves and pine-covered ridges of the Matarraña valley in Aragon's far eastern corner — one of the least visited and most quietly beautiful landscapes in Spain — a centuries-old stone masía has been converted into Torre del Marqués, a small rural hotel that keeps the agricultural gravity of the original building entirely intact. The four-storey structure, its warm sandstone walls and terracotta-tiled roofline anchored against the Sierra de Puertos, was stripped back and reconfigured to preserve the exposed rubble stonework and timber beam ceilings that give the rooms their particular character: thick walls, deep-set windows framing uninterrupted valley views, polished concrete floors in a tone that echoes the surrounding limestone. The interiors pursue a restrained material palette — microcement walls finished in sage and putty tones, linen upholstered headboards, tufted bench ends in raw flax, perforated metal cabinetry set into the original stone — that feels more Provençal farmhouse than Aragonese rural hotel, without being gratuitously fashionable about it. Black powder-coated wall lamps in a form derived from vintage French workshop fittings provide focused bedside light. The restaurant, housed in a light-filled glass and timber pavilion added to the main building, commands a panoramic sweep across the valley through full-height glazing beneath a pitched pine roof, large pendant shades in charcoal felt defining the dining room's scale. The stone-edged pool terrace below, flanked by Italian cypresses, completes a property that wears its landscape rather than standing apart from it.

"We stayed one night in March and decided it was the perfect location to celebrate my 75th Birthday on April 21st. As it turned out the Hotel advised us that not all facilities would be available that week so we took advice and moved our booking forward a week. We were particularly keen to book some massages and horse riding locally. So first the positives - the Hotel and especially the well kept room was excellent, the dinning room and fresh food prepared bt the chef very tasty. The grounds around the Hotel are great to provide a good opportunity for some easy walks - although we were discouraged from going to the peak / outlook point as apparently the trail was not clear. The negatives for us were many, existing staff were ok but there were many new and inexperienced staff that frankly were not service orientated. The bar area is not welcoming especially when no one is serving prior to dinner. As for the Spa it should have been a high point in our stay . We had delayed a week to get our chosen massage style however it has to be said the male therapist was poor, very poor. Unfortunately he had this constant rather annoying sound of trying to clear his throat. As for his touch - it was the worst I had experienced in 75 years. Aside from this the facilities looked good. In conclusion we love this place and surrounding area but as a small Leading Luxury Hotel it needs a lot to maitain the standards required over the entire opening period ( not just the peak ) Finally during our stay construction work was ongoing from 7am till way past 7pm each day on the adjacent piece of land. This can be annoying. The Management will no doubt explain all this as preparation for the new season but it definately affected our overall enjoyment. Hence my long note which I did attempt to share with reception. Would we stay again - Yes as we do like the overall package but I am interested to see if they get their act together ?"

"A peaceful, wonderful setting in a relatively undiscovered section of Spain, accessible from Valencia or Barcelona. Perched on the side of a hill, with wonderful views, quiet and everything needed on hand for a wonderful stay. We enjoyed long hikes from the property -- never using our car -- a very comfortable bed and room and delicious, thoughtful breakfast and dinners looking out over the valley and surrounding hills. Inviting staff and just a generally relaxing, delightful stay."
