PB hotel design editorial

Facing the Cathedral quarter of Seville, where orange trees line the cobblestones and the Giralda tower anchors the skyline, a white neoclassical building with a facade of shell motifs and red canopied balconies has defined this corner of the historic centre since 1930. Hotel Colón, now part of the Gran Meliá collection, was conceived as a grand civic statement — eight floors of ornamental plasterwork, Ionic pilasters, and elaborately framed windows that carry the authority of Sevillian regionalist architecture at its most self-assured. The rooftop, visible in the images, adds a limestone-decked pool terrace with glass balustrades and a timber pergola structure, the Torre Sevilla just legible on the horizon as a reminder of how emphatically the city's skyline has shifted beneath this unchanged crown. Inside, two design registers coexist. The restaurant works a mid-century brasserie vocabulary — sage-green ceramic floor tiles, walnut-panelled walls divided by brass-framed mirror sections, dark velvet tub chairs around marble-topped brass pedestals, Thonet bentwood alongside more upholstered seating in a mix that feels genuinely layered rather than curated. Guest rooms split between a quieter palette of white upholstered headboards, gold-leaf panels, and black swing-arm sconces, and bolder treatments where deep crimson walls meet dark-green panelled wainscoting and painted ceilings dense with tropical birds — an unexpected flourish that lifts the room far above the conventional grand-hotel standard.

"At this hotel making $$ is more important than the health of the guests. Water was dripping from the ceiling in our room so I put a towel on the floor. When we came back the towel was gone but during the night water started dripping again so I pushed the ceiling panel aside to see what was going on. The towel had been put on top (now soaking wet) of the ceiling panels. Attached pictures show what I found. For the amount you pay they don't bother changing/maintaining the air filters. The filer was so plugged that air has bee bypassing the filter for months which means all the fans and of the ducting was full of ??? When we went out in the morning I left both the ceiling panel and the dirty air filter off. When we came back to the room both the ceiling panel and the dirty air filter had been put back in place. For 3 days after this my throat felt like I was getting a cold. They tried to tell me it was an issue staff wasn't aware of which is impossible. 1). there had been multiple attempts to repair the leaking pipe 2.) It takes 2 minutes to replaced the filter but management has to allow it."

"Great Historic Hotel Conveniently located near city spots, restaurants and shops in the city of Seville … Service, staff and food were exceptional… rooms were spacious and comfortable…. Pool and spa were smaller than expected, but still a nice relaxing relief from the heat… Gym was also smaller than expected, but still a good spot for a workout… Overall AAAA++++ and highly recommended"

"We had a wonderful experience during our stay at Hotel Colon Gran Melia; everyone was friendly, attentive and professional, with a human touch. Particularly we were taken care of at the reception/front desk by Paula, who had an outstanding attitude and went out of her way to make us feel at home."

"Pros: Great location, great rooms, great lounge and reception staff. The breakfast is decent, nothing great. Cons: Breakfast staff need more training for a five-start hotel. The host is always asking room number and almost comes across that if she does not want you there. Then there is the shuffling of being told where to sit for breakfast from one day to another. Variation in breakfast over days is non-existent. You cannot mix and match the items on the menu (even the sides!). The shower has a curtain inside the room area for privacy - which is very weird. The toilet has a lingering bad smell that does not go away. And ofcourse, the pool is a joke. A five star hotel by definition must have a decent pool. This technically is not a fiver star hotel. Finally, the doorman/concierge constantly blocks the entry and does not apologize for doing so."
