PB hotel design editorial

At the heart of Seville's El Arenal quarter, a nineteenth-century palace whose arcaded cortile once served as the headquarters of a prominent local institution was converted into Hotel Mercer Sevilla, opening in 2016 with 25 rooms across five floors. The conversion was led by Rafael de La-Hoz, whose approach preserved the building's neoclassical bone structure — white marble flooring, slender Roman columns supporting groin-vaulted arches, a glazed gallery running the upper perimeter — while threading contemporary furniture through the historic envelope with deliberate restraint. Gold velvet sofas and sage-green armchairs are arranged across the atrium floor beneath those original arches, the columns themselves set on illuminated dark stone plinths that give the space a quietly ceremonial atmosphere without tipping into pastiche. The guest rooms carry the same internal logic: original ornate plasterwork cornicing and tall panelled walls left intact, macassar ebony joinery used for room dividers and cabinetry to introduce a warm counterpoint, grey tonal rugs grounding the pale volumes beneath high ceilings. A brass-shaded desk lamp and an arc floor light in deep black suggest a considered eclecticism in the furniture selection — pieces chosen for weight and proportion rather than brand. On the rooftop, a long lap pool runs between white-rendered parapet walls, framing low-rise Seville across the horizon in a manner that feels more like a private urban terrace than a hotel amenity.

"Gorgeous hotel. Staff were wonderful and gracious. Will go back for sure."

"We recently stayed at the Mercer Hotel in Seville and had an exceptional experience from start to finish. The location is perfect—right in the centre of the city, making it incredibly convenient for sightseeing, dining, and exploring everything Seville has to offer. The hotel itself is beautifully designed, with elegant public spaces that were always immaculate. The fresh flower displays throughout the property were genuinely outstanding and added a luxurious touch to the atmosphere. We stayed in a Junior Suite, which was spacious, spotless, and thoughtfully designed with plenty of cupboard space. The bathroom was beautiful, and the nightly turndown service was consistently flawless. As a Platinum Life member with another hotel group, and with many years of experience both travelling for business and pleasure—and having trained customer service teams myself—I have a clear sense of what exceptional service looks and feels like. The Mercer absolutely delivers on this. The staff are truly the hotel’s greatest asset. They always had time for a friendly chat, offered excellent recommendations, and, most impressively, anticipated our individual preferences remarkably quickly. At breakfast, items we liked would appear without us having to ask. In the room, personal touches were added with the same level of attention. One particularly memorable moment was meeting a staff member in the lift who was already bringing me tea and fresh milk before I had even requested it—because they had noticed what I enjoyed. Small gestures like this are rare, and they elevate the entire experience. While the hotel’s ambience and décor are stunning, it’s the warmth, professionalism, and intuition of the team that truly make the Mercer special. A heartfelt thank you to all the staff for looking after us and making us feel so welcome. I would recommend this hotel in a heartbeat and look forward to returning."

"our experience at Mercer was totally awesome. the service was impeccable. Pablo and Samuel were two of the best front desk we have met. Friendly and courteous. the hotel is clean, high ceiling in the rooms with great atmosphere. the stay here made our trip at Sevilla. Location if few blocks away from sight seeing. We hope we will be back soon. offered free cake and champagne for my wife's birthday. we also got offered 2 free drinks at the lobby, but didn't realize we had it till later. The property itself has some history to it as well."

"Our stay at Hotel Mercer Sevillawas simply exceptional. From the very first moment! The hotel itself is stunning — elegant, charming, and beautifully designed — but what truly makes it outstanding is the people. The staff are absolutely extraordinary: attentive, warm, professional, and always ready to help with a genuine smile. They consistently anticipated our needs and paid attention to every small detail, making everything effortless and perfect. We would especially like to highlight the kindness, dedication, and passion of the entire team. Their commitment to excellence and heartfelt hospitality made our stay not only comfortable and relaxing, but truly unforgettable. We cannot wait to return and will wholeheartedly recommend it to everyone we know. A perfect 10 in every way!"

"After researching hotels in Seville city centre we chose the Mercer as it has a smaller number of rooms.. It is located on a quiet street but within a couple of minutes walk to many lovely restaurants and about 10 minutes walk to the main shopping area. The hotel is beautifully appointed with excellent staff, from reception to waiting staff and a very helpful concierge. We stayed in a suite as a treat , not over large room but very well appointed with an excellent bathroom area that was spacious. The breakfast was very nice, we had the Mercer Breakfast, expensive for what it was but great quality and choice. I would not hesitate in recommending this hotel, if you are looking for something beautiful with friendly staff and excellent service."
